Well...after all this time the vv is finally finished. Registering will be done on Tues... I am VERY happy with the overall look & the fact it is all my work with the help of you guys. Thank you! Working around other owners "add ons" was a challenge but I simply went with it. It is not by any means "perfect" but hey....there will be a lot of fun weekends away with the joy of NOT putting up/pulling down a tent in the rain any more!!!! Hope you like the finished product! PS - There is a nice La Pavoni italian caffe machine in that bottom cupboard under the stove! Fits perfectly...Oooh Yeah....... ;D Retro van.... Vintage card table re-upholstered top with retro chairs bought recently from you know where! Have a banana lounge to match! Sooo happy with the cushions...exactly what I wanted. If anyone would like Mark's mobile # let me know. Mark chased the vinyl from Tasmania - needed just the right red - piped and buttoned both sides so that they are reversible.....excellent job! Yes...the little Nipper radio works a treat! Had it for years! Everything turned out splendidly! Had a lot of this retro gear for years! Way before it became fashionable NOW! The bed is bigger than I thought - "the boy" can lay full length and still wriggle his toes! These last two photo's are for Al....see it's a FRANKLIN Al pal! Definitely a FRANKLIN Al!!! Can I have my certificate of authenticity now? Please please.....come on....it's JUST A SHELF! ;D ;D ;D

Oh Jenni!
It's just beautiful through and through - what an amazing job you've done, and then thoughtfully kitted it out with all the right acoutrements! Your flooring looks perfect too with your scheme.
Love it!

Thanks Seeshells....don't look too close at the flooring! But was happy with the colour....reno'ing this vv was worse than doing the house & landscaping!!! I redid the card table myself & should have laid out the banana lounge...oooops forgot that bit of prop! If you go back a way in this site you will see photo's of before...I think about page 8/9 or so? Sassy/Gabby is the vv's name! It's inscribed on the mirror by original owner....Why do we assume they are of the "female" gender...Hummm...may have to change that mode of thinking.... "Clayton", "Rex", "Clyde"..... J

PS Seeshells - How did you see lino in photo's? Realised I didn't take a shot of lower portion. Or maybe I did but stupid photobucket didn't download it....$30 was a bargain. Can't thank YOU enough for that tip off! J

G'day Jenniwren, What a great job you've done. The van looks fantastic both inside and out, and I love the touches you've given it with the nic nacs inside. If Al won't give you a certificate of authenticity just give me a ring. I can use photoshop to produce a certificate just as well as he can...but shh! Oh, hang on, the phone's ringing... "Oh, hi Al...uh huh, mmm, uh huh...no, no, I'd never produce a counterfeit certificate of Franklin authenticity...uh huh...you'll confiscate the wheels on my Don if I even consider it?...uh huh...no, no, I wasn't even thinking about...mmm hmmm...OK, talk later Al." Click. I'm back now Jennie - you know the offer I made? Sorry can't do it now. But I still love what you've done with your van. Don Ricardo

Hi Jenny After all the discussion, and teasing Al about lippy and whatnot, I had to see it! On the tipoff, bah, more the merrier. I was looking at the bit that comes up under the table - grey speckly is lovely! But if you want to give us a wider shot, I'd love to get a good ol' gander. I love your old kitchenalia - seems we have a bit in common. Mine's been in the closet looking for a home for years. I better get a crack on, or not only will I not make this Easter (that's shot to h*ll), but I won't make the Nats in time either! Admiring your work Seeshell

Congratulations Jenny... you have done a great job finding a home for your collection of retro gear, it all looks very tastefully done...... straight out of "My Cool Caravan" The tea pot cosy is a classic, did you make it ?. Al would have to be a hard hearted soul not to award you the certificate of authenticity. Cobber.

Hi jenniewren,
Your van looks positively gorgeous and allthough you're to modest to say, alot of skill goes into the interior design, your choice of colours, fabrics and accessories blend together beautifully to create an interior both welcoming and pleasing to the eye. The exterior is none to shabby either. All your hard work and efforts have left you with something to be proud of.Well done.
Cheers retro64

Don Ricardo - Al has eyes in the back of his head! Like Mum's do! He was onto you immediately! But you need those wheels on the Don...just like I NEED that dreaded, elusive SHELF! The vv will be decked out in all retro cooking utensils etc. I tried to find a cake container & tea caddy that match the salt dispenser but am now getting suspicious of our daughter who is NOW into retro gear for her house! They seem to have gone missing!!!?? Hummm....maiden voyage will be March l/w'end hopefully...to a place called "Senini's track" Now a Parks Vic run camping ground opp Moondarra dam b'tween Erica & Walhalla, Victoria. It holds a special meaning to me as it is my Grandfather's birth place. The family celebrated 100 years there last year so I thought it rather appropriate we go there! It is lovely with the river running around the perimeter of camp ground. Have BBQ's and toilets. Can't wait - have the Moet chilled! Don't think I will smash it against the van however! What a waste!
Seeshells - shall try a lino shot for you! Photobucket is a challenge at times!
Cobber - the t cosy belongs to my 98yo Granny as the tea pot..she was chaffed to see the vv yep (via email) she is a switched on cool granny & sent them to me! Have an old photo of her/my mum/me with their vv back in the early 60's! I was about 2 or 3 & don't remember it! I can knit/crochet & should do a cover for the toaster eh!
Smiley - Can't wait to clutch those rego plates....
Cruisindoug - Many a naughty word escaped my lips whilst doing this vv....but it was worth it!
Retro64 - Thank you. The grey laminate & mod additions by previous owner was not pleasing to the eye when we opened the door! But just worked with it all & am pleased with the colours. I did not dilemma too much just went ahead and threw it together. I have not painted the exterior as it was in great cond. BUT will re-paint next year in the original col's which you can see when the large vent is removed! Of course the tow car will need to be taken into consideration..."The Boy" is looking, looking.....he takes longer than a girl to decide what he wants!!!!
Thanks everyone - appreciate your comments...really! J

G'day Jennie, Have a go at those two blokes above trying to put pressure on me! Ha! Do you honestly think one of them would give you a copy of a Don brass ID plate, simply because you have a van that "looks like a Don"?? Or would the other bloke give you an "Ol 36" badge just because you have a van that looks like it was built in 1936?! "Ha!" again, I say! Me think some white men speak with forked tongue! I took the strongest magnifying glass I've got, and pored over all your photos, looking for something... anything...to confirm your van is a Franklin. And unfortunately, I'm still looking. Here are a couple of photos of genuine Franklins from the late '50s/early '60s. I guess the most significant difference I can see between these vans and yours is the radius of the roof curve above the rear side window... Your van... Even when Franklin changed the shape of the front face of their vans, that generous curve at the back of the roof was maintained. Your van looks to have a more "pointier" roof. If I flip your photo back-to-front and match it up with the other Franklin, what do you see?... It would be easy to simply say your van is a Franklin, but is it really?? Congratulations on a wonderful job with the resto. Heck, if your van doesn't pass rego, no van ever will. ;D ;D cheers, Al.

That has done it Al! Noooooo.....what is it then??? Come on you guru's of this forum...come up with something...Vic roads has it down in the archives as a wayfarer....how about that Dave? Uh, uh...I know, it's a no name brand that's what it is! I like Don Ricardo much better than you now Al!
Don Ricardo.....now about that certificate - you don't really need tyres on your Don van do you? Batting eyelids furiously here... Damn it... I dub thee vintage van of mine new name & it will be a HE as only males could give me this much grief....yes...you are now named "CLAYTON"!!!!!!!! Thank you seriously Al for all your helpful advice....whatever it is....it has come up quite well. May be it IS a home-made job eh? Taking a couple of more pic's of flooring for Seeshells soon....is there anything I can photograph to convince you Al? Didn't think so......J

PS Al - you're a bit of a wizz at this computer stuff! Have been studiously following every contour of the vans you posted. I can see the SLIGHT difference in shape but could it be the angle of my photo? Or the fact the prev. owner re-clad the alum at front & back? Grabbing at straws here......J

You don't like the name "Wayfarer"?? It's as good as 'Clayton'. Quite often Wayfarer just put their name on other brands of vans, so a lot of Wayfarers are just Clayton vans of something else. Maybe this van was made for Wayfarer by Franklin, but was slightly different to the Franklin Franklins (Oooh...could there be a loophole? ). Did you know there are 100,001 anagrams that can be made from the words Clayton Wayfarer? I think what you need, to get your van authorised as a Franklin, is a "A fat lawyer crony" When are you hoping to get it registered? I'll see if I can work out what other possibilities your van might be in the meantime. Although, 'Wayfarer' does sound nice... "Wayyyyyy-FARER!", shouts the V.V cheer squad. ;D ;D Nice van you've got there, Jennie. What is it? cheers, Al.

G'day again, Jennie... Coronet!...maybe... Look at the photos in Reply #5 in the Coronet DHL thread and see what you think. If you read the other info in that thread, there is mention of Coronet also building caravans for the Hawthorn brand, and if you have a look at the shape of the wheel arch in this Hawthorn thread, then we might be able to put a few pieces of jigsaw together. Whaddya reckon?? Who owns the Coronet van in Reply #5 in the DHL thread?? This we have to find out, and then see if the wheel arch looks the same as the Hawthorn. Coronet started about 7 years after Franklin in the same city of Ballarat, so I'm presuming they were keeping an eye on each other and maybe copying each other's designs to some degree. The forward sloping wheel arch design is showing up on both sides of the fence, it would appear. We need more info Jenny! Get that van of yours registered, and get going to Ballarat!! Ask everybody there over the age of 80 for their old photos of their Coronet caravans. Hurry, Jenny, hurry...photos are getting chucked out as we speak! cheers, Detecative Franklin D Roosterbelt. ;D

Aww man...the pressure is killing me! Registering tomorrow....think of me with clammy palms at around 2.30pm! Must buy a fire extinguisher....must bolt spare back on...must clear vv of projectile nic nacs...must put Vic roads label on....urrgh....must look up thread....what is it?...what is it?....pressure...pressure....

Well! What can I say.....it looks kind of like a...a...a...WAYFARER/CORONET....not the Hawthorn I don't think as mine hasn't the bulge at the front Detective. Wish there was a shot of the interior. But you are right with the contour of the roof. Interestingly enough, the key identity pce of paper I was given has wayfarer written on it! Could it be Roosterbelt you have hit the jackpot? So what is it again...a wayfarer built by franklin with the shape of the coronet.....no port hole however - full windows on "Clayton"! Looks like a trip to Ballarat at some stage just for you Al.....you never know what I may turn up....doesn't it indicate if a name has been written on the inside cupboard lid...it is the general rule it has been manufactured? Correct me if I am wrong and that IS quite often! Watson will be on the case.....er road to Ballarat perhaps next trip away.......meanwhile...keep digging dirt Roosterbelt. J

Forget everything else about the Hawthorn except the shape of the wheel arch. What we now need to know is whether the Coronets from the early '60s had a similar shaped wheel arch. That one in the DHL thread doesn't help with the wheel spats, but the shape of that van is pretty close to yours. Forget the porthole window as well. That DHL van might be shorter than yours and they couldn't fit a full window in, OR, it might be a bit earlier than yours when they were still putting porthole windows in. (War cry) ♪ Cor-o-net! Cor-o-net! They're the best That you can get! Corrrrrr-o-NET!! Yay!!!!!!!!! ♫ Now try this one: Wayfarer! Wayfarer! Ummm... See? No contest! Coronet wins!!! ;D ;D cheers, F. D. R.

HI Jenni I understand Mrs OldFartsz is quite good at naming Wayfarers. You should give her a crack at it. If it is a Clayton's version of something, and you want to give it a boy's name, what about Monash? One for us Melbournians. Best of luck tomorrow! Seeshell

You sure make me have a chuckle Al pal....sooo couldn't sleep - out I went with torch & ladder....only mad englishmen (women) and dogs would do this at this time of night. Climbing up steadily - yep - the roof alum is flat finish alum. Noticed the C..c..c..coronet (can hardly say the word) in one of your pic's seems to have flat alum! By george, by jingo we may have cracked the mystery! Clayton...errr..c...c..coronet has had the alum replaced on rear & front I am sure of it with diamond patterned alum...guess I could learn to say the new anthem you wrote....yep sure I can if it means we have cracked it. Coronet though? Just doesn't have that ring to it! You are my number one bestie again Al pal....knew I could rely on your veritable store of knowledge and doing the ground work....does anything beat you? Still need to verify don't we? J
Thanks Seeshells for tomorrow's registering -very exciting - you know Clayton is in Melbourne! J

Mmmmm...back AGAIN....sitting here chewing on museli looking, looking at the shape of the c..c..Coronet again Roosterbelt when I became FULLY awake and studied it closer! Blur..blur..Me a bit tired this morning...See the red stripe running around the sides of the van...what do you notice about it?.....Hummm....anything unusual about it?....Come on Roosterbelth sleuth...look closely...squint harder!!! Ok, I'll tell you...(bit slow in the mornings are you?).....
It has a black pin stripe on top and bottom. Your thinking, AND... so? Now I have mentioned that when I took the large vent off to try & get to fridge (which I might add didn't work) I discovered the original paint colours underneath....beigey pooey colour for the main and an olive greeny colour ONE stripe about the same thickness as the c..c..Coronet stripe (can still see a slight outline even now under the white of mine....BUT it has a thin black line top & bottom of greeny stripe same as the one in the pic. At the time I thought that would be a painful job!
Well...well... Wadda ya think of my theory??
I know the wheel arch of the Hawthorn looks identical but the c..c..Coronet looks to me more like the shape of mine.....and I reckon if you took the spat off the c..c..Coronet...the arch would be the same.....so we need to find out....WHO OWNS THAT VAN at Cora-Lyn OR AN EARLY C..C..CORONET. I have never come across one in the forum since I have been skulking around it. It would also be fantastic if we got an interior shot of a c..c..Coronet (Urrgh don't think I can do it. My head has been geared for Franklin...then Waaay Faaarer for sooo long) My overhead cupboards slide not hinge....that could be the final clue! Errr..I'll go back to eating my now soggy museli & cold coffee.....I rest my case! J

G'day Jennie, Only two and a half hours to go to rego time! ;D We have a forum member tenoroc (which is obviously coronet backwards ) but he doesn't get on the forum very much. I reckon HE would be a good man to tell us whether your van could be a Coronet or not. Seems he had a fair bit to do with the Coronet business in the old days, and knows a bit about their history. He hasn't posted since Aug last year, so I dunno whether he still hangs around or not. Other than that, hughdeani might be another bloke that could shed a bit of light. Surely someone who was at the 2008 Cora Lynn show knows who owns the Coronet pictured in the DHL!! Good luck with the rego! cheers, Al. "Connor" the Coronet "Connie" the Coronet "Coo Coo Kachoo" the Coronet (...sorry, had a dizzy spell just then ) "Corrie" the Coronet "Courtney" the Coronet "Chevaliez Mercedes Tiger Balm" the Coronet (...No? )
