Hi all - I've just discovered your great forum and am new to the vintage craze! I'm really interested in finding information about any Airstreams in Australia, in particular if anyone has one for sale. I'm in SA, but happy to look all over. If we found an Airstream, we're keen to put it on a permanent site in a caravan park, but we also have a plan B - just in case. Plan B would be to get a cute vintage van to tow around - can anyone give me any tips on an ideal van for 3 (2 adults and a child)? Lots I've looked at seem to only cater for 2 people. Thanks - and can't wait to hear from you... Susan

Hi Sgray, Welcome to the V V forum and the V V obsession. There are not many Airstreams in Australia. A couple of forum members have them. One is Chippydave01 who has acquired a miniature version (for an Airstream) that was brought to Australia for an oil drilling outfit - click here. The other forum member who has an Airstream (I think they still have it?) is Willyn (Will and Lyn) - click here. Willyn imported this van direct from the US of A. In one of his posts Will says that he knows of nine Airstreams in Australia, and occasionally you hear about someone who has imported one which is for sale. If you hang out long enough one might come up for sale, but if you want a quicker result you might be better to work on Plan B. Smaller vans 8, 9 or 10 feet in length (that means the length of the cabin excluding the draw bar) and the little caravanettes (basically a double bed on wheels with an outdoor kitchen alcove) generally only have two berths. However vintage vans 12 feet in length or longer will almost always have at least four berths. Some have two bunks and a divan or dinette table that fold down to make a double bed. Others have a divan and a dinette table that fold down to make two double beds. If you look at some of the vans in the Down History Lane section you'll get some ideas about (a) what appeals to you, and (b) what will suit your needs. Good luck with whichever plan you go with. It's all fun! Don Ricardo

Thanks for the info -
I think I'm starting an obsession with the airstream!
Would be great if anyone hears of any to let me know.
I did see the gold coast ad somewhere (says he's renovated a similar (Avion?) for Jimmy Barnes!.
I also stumbled across a forum with someone from the us who said he had a mate in Tanunda SA and they were thinking about importing and selling them back in 2008. Does anyone know this Tanunda person?
thanks again, Susan

Hi Susan Welcome to the forum! Can't help you with the Tanunda guy re your Airstream enquiry. However I just wanted to comment that if you want to use the Airstream for an onsite van, then it will be the most expensive onsite van you can buy They don't come cheap, and you may even find that if you find one to buy, the owner may not even sell it to you for that purpose Here in Aus, they are quite rare and a real collector's item, to say nothing about expensive. So you may wish to reconsider that aspect, unless you go for option B!!! cheers Ray

Hi, love the look of the Airstream but can't afford one. That said we just went to Clare and Burra, and saw one near Tanunda being towed by a 50's Chevy Panel Van. Unfortunately it was going the other way and the camera was in the van.

thanks for the tip on the US imports - I've seen these ads/sites, but I'm a bit chicken to do this. The ebay guy says "just pay 50% and I'll ship it from us".
I'd rather try and find one lying around somewhere in oz where I can see it in the flesh!
Are you back yet Larry?

Hi SGray, Since you're in SA and interested in a distinctive van, viz, the Airstream, you might perhaps like to consider my very original, quite highly featured 13', 3 berth unit. Its in poor shape but could be restored with less work than one might think or probably at less cost than the hypothetical Airstream by some-one else doing ithe work for you. I have just put it on the for sale/wanted thread under "Plywood van needs home (& work)" vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=forsale2&action=display&thread=7572Cheers, Tom
