G'day C/Dave,
Great to have the history of your little Airstream. It really is part of Australia's touring heritage with that background, and well worth looking after.
Was it used for accommodation or is it set up more like a site office? I couldn't quite tell from what I could see through the open door.

Ah, yes, as I can now see from the additional photos.
Should be a superb van once you have performed your wizardry on it.
Interesting that you can date it with the dutchmans cap, and that there were so few made with this feature. You've obviously been able to do some research on it.

Dave, Dave, Dave..... ... You have broken our oath of silence and made the big announcement. Now everyone knows why you asked the question about pumping paint stripper through a spray gun. Your using it to strip the inside of the airstream..... a big job as paint stripper will only take one layer of paint off at a time and you would do damage trying to use any sort of abrasives on a sander on a concave surface. She looks great mate. and i bet it towed perfect on the way home from Brisbane. The great thing about the inside is.... there is now defined layout and you can set it up to suit your needs. Timber benchtops will look cool. I remember a photo someone put up of a Van park somewhere full of airstreams. There was a picture of an airstream looking through the front window(s) with a full wrap around timber benchtop kitchen at the front it had recessed downlights above the bench and the photo was taken at night......it looked magnificent. Give me a yell when ya move on to polishing the outside i will gladly donate a weekends effort to help out with the "Spit and polish".... you do use spit and polish dont ya Dave ?? . It would be a privelege just to say i have worked on it... and all it will cost ya is my drinks bill ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I know we wouldnt get it finished but at least an extra pair of hands scrubbing would make some headway. Harko... I think the front end is HK..... its part of another one of chippys projects.. Oh .. and for those of you that haven't seen Daves Chev .....here ya's go...... Fastest Airstream towa in 'Stralia mate ;D Reddo

All good things come to those who wait....... And then jump at the chance as soon as they can ;D ;D ;D ;D
What a great find Rare in the US of A and even rarer in Aus...... Congratulations Looking at your photos I see the making of a great van that will turn heads wherever she goes
Any lumps and bumps that are left in the van are only proof that she is a tough ol' bird and has earned her battle scars..... nothing to be ashamed or worried about there
Looking forward to the restoration photos
Take your time and make a fantastic job of it
Half the fun of owning such a van is putting your touches of brilliance on it.....
Cheers Atouchofgreen ;D ;D ;D ;D

G'day Dave, That is a pretty good find and as others have mentioned it does have an Australian heritage connection. If it has no internal lining... that would make it a bit uncomfortable as a touring 'van so are you going to restore it to what it was originally used for.... would look great with old mining maps on the benchs... old surveying instruments scattered about, sounds like a great project if that's the path you're going down Cobber.

hey Chippy. that van is totally unique and desirable. love the panel work. ;D how could you keep it under your hat for so long and did you really get it from Brisbane your plans for polished internals will look great.. but.. what about the heat ( and cold ) insulation factor? Coledale 2009? regards earlee.

Yo.. Hey Cobber .. "If it has no internal lining... that would make it a bit uncomfortable as a touring 'van so are you going to restore it to what it was originally used for.... would look great with old mining maps on the benchs... old surveying instruments scattered about, sounds like a great project if that's the path you're going down Cobber. " Mate i know your a stickler for originality but.................. Can you imagine Dave laying on the floor of his van at Katoomba... minus 5 degrees with 3 mining maps pulled up over him to keep warm. I suppose the real bonus would be not having a stove or fridge and learning how to cook outside on an open fire with the old surveying instruments. Surveyors tripods make great camp oven hangers !!! and he would be able to look through the theodilite at everyone pulling a coldy out of their fridges. What you are suggesting would be great if he planned on sticking it in a heritage museum as a static display ... but geeeez mate .. let him have a few creature comforts ... Hows about we let him tip all the woody pegs out of the surveyors duffle bag so he can stretch it across the back and make a hammock so he doesnt have to sleep on the floor. These things where primarily designed as touring vans.. Thats why they have bullet fronts on them. They can be towed at speed with very little effort from the towcar. The Yanks could have used old Chevs or Ford 5 ton trucks decked out on the back and done the same job as the airstream done. I reckon if its gunna be used for recreational use then it should be decked out to Daves design/ wants and needs. No matter which way it goes this old van from up Charters towers way will be a class act when shes finished. I seen the post about it come up on the forum about 2 years ago. It had a contact phone number. It was only up for a few hours then dissapeared. Dave was quick enough to jot the number down at the time..... I'll let him fill in the gaps and take up the rescue story. Reddo

I was showing the 2 and 4 year old boys some vintage vans on youtube yesterday when I saw what I'm sure was a canary yellow one of these - it was matched to a canary yellow tow car (Chev or similar). It really did look great and worth a look.
Sorry I cant help with youtube details as we were just surfing around - but started the search with vintage air stream...
great looking stream Dave...
