Australian Caravan Magazine and Log Manual
Vol. 4 - No. 1
Published by The Australian Caravan Annual Publishing Co.
Publishers of "The Australian Caravan Magazine and Caravan Trailer News".
Managing Editor: John D. Porter
Head Office: 3rd Floor, 51 William Street, Melbourne.
There is no publication date printed in the book, but the contents indicate the book was published possibly in the first half of 1939, and certainly prior to July 1939. There are advertisements relating to 1938 model caravans in the book as well, so the actual publication date is difficult to determine.
This publication has been put together in a similar manner to Keith Winser's publications of the 1950s/60s, in that it is a collection of articles that were published previously in a monthly magazine, and then "cut and pasted" into an Annual publication. In the case of this 1939 edition, articles must have come from the monthly "Australian Motorist" magazine that is advertised throughout. There are examples in this book that cover the same subject on more than one occasion. Some articles are missing information that would have appeared in the monthly article.
As far as the extent of caravan manufacturing in 1938/39 goes, John D. Porter writes, "The gypsy spirit is building a huge new industry about the caravan trailer. No less than 50 firms are building land yachts for auto touring." [...hey cobber, shouldn't be too hard to work out who made "Ol '36", since there were only about 50 firms doing it ]
The publication includes advertisements from a few manufacturers of the time, and includes a sketch/photograph:
Land Cruiser
Jennison
Romany Road
Carwill
Metro
Nomad
Rollalong
Other advertisements include Masonite 'Presdwood'; Alladdin kero stove and lamp; Kenworth sponge rubber caravan mattresses; various spring/axle manufacturers (Henderson et al); etc.
As time permits, I'll copy the advertisements into the DHL sections.
cheers,
Al.
