G'day brewer, When I look through all the Carapark toaster information on my computer, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to clearance light fittings. In fact, sketches in early advertisements as well as early photographs don't show any clearance lights at all. I can't find any photographs of Carapark toasters in my collection that have the same type of light, so it would appear they have been retrofitted by owners at a later date, and selected according to what was available at the time. I also can't find any that had a light down at the bottom rear either, so yours is a bit unique in that respect. Some of the photos have a light up on the top front side, others have a light at the centre front side. I can't recall ever seeing a clearance light that was white. Only amber and red. As you know, if a clearance light faces forward, it should be amber. If it faces rearwards, it should be red. If it's a dual face light, it's amber front and red rear. I saw a caravan on ebay once, that had the clearance lights fitted vertically - amber pointing up to the sky and red to the ground. Whoever fitted it obviously didn't know how they should go, and probably thought "If I put it vertically, at least I'll be half-right!" Are you able to describe the shape of the "shadow" where the lights were fitted. That might help determine what type of light you'd be looking for. Otherwise, you could choose to do without them (the van is under 7ft wide?) or you could try looking for something suitable. It's worth looking at the USA ebaymotors website, and search using the key words clearance, and marker in various combinations with the words vintage; light; lamp. For example, if you search for vintage marker lamp, you'll possibly come across old truck marker lamps (the ones they used to have on the cabin roof). At least you'll get a feel for what's out there on the market that might suit your requirements. cheers, Al.

Al, is there any chance you could re-scan pages 25 and 43 of "Australian Outdoors" Dec 1957 (from the 1st page of the Carapark thread in Down History Lane) at a higher resolution and email them to Brewer and I? (I'm assuming you're interested too, Brewer?) There's stuff about the sixteen-two and I for one would really like to get a clearer look!

G'day brewer, Hella, and probably Narva, still make the cabin marker lamps that fit flush to the surface. If you have a look at this link: Hella Cab Marker Lamps, you'll see the range available on the New Zealand Hella website. When firefighter recommends you go to swapmeets, you'll be looking for the old-style ones with metal chromeplated casings, rather than the later plastic versions. If you and/or justanotheramy want the Carapark information I have on my computer, send me a name and mailing address via a Personal Message, and I'll burn it onto a CD-Rom and mail it off to you. It'll be in a folder format that needs Windows Explorer to open it up (Win Explorer is part of the Windows operating system on computers, so you'll already have it). cheers, Al.

(Win Explorer is part of the Windows operating system on computers, so you'll already have it) Err... no, actually, I won't -- I'm on a Mac. No Windows here I am interested, though. Is it the folder that's restrictively formatted, or its contents?

Aaar, gees, Amy... Using a Mac for Vintage vans is a contradiction in terms! Real vintage van lovers use the prehistoric Windows PCs, or even better, a Commodore 64 with a B-drive!! ;D ;D If brewer can convert it for you, great!...otherwise I can separate all the bits of information out into single .jpg files (photo format) and burn them as a list of individual files. I'll send two Windows copies to brewer, and if it doesn't work out, I can send a specially burnt copy to you. cheers, Al.

Using a Mac for Vintage vans is a contradiction in terms! No -- using a mac makes perfect sense: both macs and vintage vans are much more stylish than the alternatives!
