Hi, more questions, I'm afraid. We'd like to put an airconditioner in the van. I've looked on eBay and seen small portable air conditioners that vent through a hose out the back like the hose on a clothes dryer. Does anyone have any experience of them? Are they any good? There seems to be a lot of them for sale on eBay which makes me a bit unsure of them. Can anyone recommend any particular air conditioner as more suitable than others? Can anyone tell me what size we'd need for a 16ft van? Barbara B

Thank you Brewer and Rodnet - this is the sort of information we're after. Rodnet, Tony's the caravan repairer around here. Anything that goes wrong with the van will get handyman Tony attacking it. I guess if you needed professional repairs, you could always remove your airconditioner first. Barbara B

G'day barbarab, I remember reading bits and pieces on various caravan forums about roof-mounted air conditioners. Apparently the framework existing around hatches is not strong enough to support the weight of a/c units, so additional framework is required (usually some sort of square steel tubing). One of our other members here, frankidownunder, would be a useful person for advice about the roof framework in these early Franklins (because there isn't any roofing framework ). Sounds like some sort of floor-standing model, or a window model, might be the better option for you. cheers, Al.

Thanks Al, The roof units were tempting because they're right out of the way. We're looking into small plug-in box units now, or maybe a split system.. We're checking out prices and ease of installation. Barbara B
