The 'Roadmaster' brand name appears to have been used by two caravan manufacturers in two different states. The best known manufacturer of Roadmaster vans is the South Australian firm which was established in 1946 and continues to the present day - for more information click here. However, the Roadmaster name was also used for vans built by McCallum & Brown in East Brunswick, a Melbourne inner suburb. (Source: Keith Winser, Caravan and Touring in Australia No 2, 1948/49, p. 32) The significant differences between the style and design of the Roadmaster vans built in Victoria and South Australia suggest that there were no links between the manufacturers in the two states, and that they were independent firms. The Victorian Roadmasters were featured in Winser's Australian caravan guides from 1948 through to 1951, but are not mentioned in later books.
