G'day Sharpie, And welcome to the forum. If you go to our "Down History Lane" forum and click on the index at the top of the page..... scroll down to "Viscount" and you can see three pages of what we know about Viscount. After you've had a look there come back with any questions or added information you have and somebody on the forum will be only too pleased to accommodate you Cobber.

Hi sharpie, unfortunately the Viscount history thread won't tell you much about the Ambassadors, because slack ol' me hasn't got around to putting the info in there yet. The Ambassador name existed before Viscount started using it. There was a separate company in Sth Aust producing vans with the name Ambassador, in the very early 1960s (and maybe late '50s??). I don't know whether Viscount ended up buying them out or not, because in August 1964 Viscount launched their own model named the Ambassador. Without seeing what you're van actually looks like, it's a bit of a hit and miss affair trying to guess the date. As you probably know, Viscount made vans with three names: Viscount, Ambassador, and Valiant. Chassis numbers are all over the place, so I've given up trying to make sense of it all until I collect a heap more examples. For the Ambassadors, I've seen a 'B' number, an 'E' number, and a 'G' number...and now your 'D' number. The following photos are of an Ambassador with the chassis number of E361. The painted flashes on the side are the same as those shown in newspaper advertisements from 1967 or 1968... Here is a newpaper photo from September 1966, showing a 15ft Ambassador, and the side flashes from that year... How do either of these compare with your van?? cheers, Al.

hi cobber and al. thanks for the welcome. You are right all the info about ambassadors is difficult to understand. Our van is identical to chassis no E361 even the chassis no is welded in the same place. There is one difference though the side stripes on ours were around the windows like a valiant and there is no evidence of stripes being anywhere else. When we stripped the blue paint off there was light green underneath but this did not go under the windows when we took them out. You proberly guess that we are doing a full resto just like our cars.I will post some pics when our daughter-in-law comes down in a couple of weeks, to difficult for us oldies. Cheers Sharpie
