Ok ok I know I am going to be shot down in flames, however I have a question which I hope some you can help me with... Not quite a vintage towcar well not for another 22 years! I have a 2000 VW Golf 1.6ltr 5spd manual which according to the vehicles spec sheet is able to tow a trailer with brakes up to 1200kgs in weight. Not that I would tow one that heavy but I am considering a small van for purchase and it weighs just under 600kgs Do you think I will be towing the ass out of my poor Golf? Or do you think this would be ok? Any advice would be greatly appreciated ;D Cheers Greg

Hi Greg, it would probably be a legal minefield for people here to say what you can and can't do with your car... If the manufacturer specifies up to 1200kgs with brakes, then you can assume the car is more than capable of towing a van that weighs just under 600kgs. I guess the real question is what capability the car has of stopping with a 600kg unbraked load behind it! There might be some other aspects for you to consider in relation to the capacity of the towbar, and whether the manufacturer has recommended upper speed limits depending on the weight of the van. This link will take you to a condensed version of the National Australia Towing Regulations... www.campertrailers.org/towing_regulations.htm...it's worth having a read. 600kgs seems a lot for a 'small' van. That equates to 12 hundredweight in the old money. The Atlantic 9ft 6ins vans are rated as 6cwt (~300kgs) and Belinda and Rob tow theirs with an old Austin 1800. What sort of van are you looking at? cheers, Al.
