:)Hi everyone!I am selling a divine little van on ebay.(Item number 120301380273 or type in 'vintage caravan' to locate). It has been locked away in a shed for 30 years and is in wonderful original condition.I would be grateful if members could answer some of my questions. I am unsure of the manufacurer-is there a sticker or plate somewhere? The van has the red logo RELAX at the front.I see another member's van has the logo FAIRWAY. What would be a realistic value for such an item? Can members tell me anything about the van?(I can provide photos if someone tells me how to do this).Otherwise they can be viewed on ebay. Thanks!Regards goldenoldie.

Goldenoldie, some thoughtless cretin has already stolen your photos and posted them over in our History section!! ooh...err...ahem... ;D With 6 days to go and bidding up to $4000 already, man you are going on that world trip much sooner than you thought!! First time we've seen a Relax van as far as I know. Good luck with the auction. cheers, Al.

Hi Cobber and Goldenoldie,
Having looked at the profiles of the two vans, I don't think they're from the same manufacturer. The floorline on the Relax is basically dead straight from the front to the back, whereas the Fairway has a curved floorline. The roofline on the Relax seems to me to have a steeper slope than the Fairway and ends in a gentle curve, whereas the Fairway has a tighter curve at the back end of the roofline. The door on the Relax goes further down to the floorline than on the Fairway. And so on. And that's all apart from the fact that the Fairway was made in Brisbane and the Relax seems to have come from Sydney according to Al.
Both vans have a nameplate made out of red plastic letters, but there were a number of other manufacturers in the 50's who used similar nameplates - Roma for one, and they were made in Victoria.
So, my guess is we are talking about different manufacturers...
Good luck with the sale Goldenoldie.

G'day Don, I was hoping Reddo would buy into this one. I know I'm drawing a long bow but I'm having trouble finding anything about “Fairway” caravans in the “specification” or “Trade Directory” in any of the “Caravan & Touring” manuals I have. In Reddo's discourse on “Matilda” @ vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=photo&thread=1258&page=1 He mentions that the chassis was made by “Ajax” in Sydney and the old bloke he bought it from worked for “Viscount” (Sydney). Reddo also asks if somebody can tell him where “Fairways” were made.... there is no response to that question on that thread.......... so where did you get the information from Reddo that said it was made in Redcliffe, Qld. (Why do I have the feeling I'm going to get shot down in flames here ) I acknowledge all the differences you point out Don, and I expect one was made a year or two before the other but I just see similarities, particularly inside. Cobber.

Hi Don! I don't think they're from the same manufacturer either. The similarities are more likely to do with the fashion at the time. However, having said that,a fellow that used to sell vans told me that a lot of the companies were very small operations and that the employees often used to start manufacturing for themselves.Who knows-maybe they really are related without technically being from the same manufacturer. The relax name is actually RE-LAX and I do have a photo of the front with name plate but not sure how to add it to the forum.Anyway looks like this little bondie will have a new home as it's met it's reserve. It's a real treasure and I hope it goes to an enthusiast who appreciates what these great vans have to offer. Cheers! goldenoldie.

Hi Cobber and Goldenoldie,
Cobber - The information that the Fairway was made in Brisbane came from the honourable Mr Reddo himself. He has tried to track down the people that built the Fairway by talking to the Arrow caravan people, but was told that "The last bloke that had anything to do with Fairway retired a year or 2 after Arrow took over and shifted camp", (meaning after Arrow shifted locations within the Brisbane metro area).
Goldenoldie - It would be good to post the pic of the nameplate on the Re-Lax thread in Down History Lane. Can you email the photo either to Franklin1 (who started the Re-Lax thread) or to me, and we will be happy to post it for you. You can email us by using the little icon under our avatars in the column to the left of our posts.
