Can anyone help us date a Murrumba star. The draw bar has a serial numberM88 268-11. The fridge also has a number near a dial that also contains 68 in its serial. The van is about 14 ft and we would also like to know an approximate weight. regards Gemma

can't help you date a Murrumba star Brad & Gem, but I can tell you they're bloody ugly ......personal opinion only of course ;D A car yard out Maddinton way had one in their yard a while back ......surferboy was checking it out. And, I think Daggsey owned one, or something similar, he did an accross Aus trip in it during the early 80's. Mark

Gooday all you Murrumba Star fans! ;D Here's one of the very few photos I have of my Murrumba Star at the NT/WA border in 1983. I am devastated Grand Pooh Bah at your unkind remarks about these wonderful examples of finely crafted fibreglass modules . Unfortunately, not being an appreciator(??) of the finer points of caravans at the time, I actually can't remember it's age, but I reckon it was fairly old when I bought it in 1981 (or at least it seemed old at the time ;D). I can remember it had tandem 10" Mini wheels on rubber torsion bar suspension. It travelled from Gilgandra (NSW) via the Oodnadatta Track to Darwin and then down the west coast to Wittenoom (WA) where the suspension finally gave up the ghost and I sold it for the value of the fridge. It was moulded fibreglass inside, just like those moulded bath/shower units you could/can buy, with a lift up hatch at the rear. It was about 11 or 12 feet long and must have been fairly light, because it towed fairly easily behind the petrol Toyota Slowlux 4wd . Didn't mean to steal your thread Gem,........maybe there's someone out there that can shed some more light on the van you are looking at. I believe that Murrumba Star were built in SE Qld...maybe some of our bananabending compatriots can help with more info. daggsey "You'll travel far in a Murrumba Star"

Hi BradnGem, Try a PM to Windman - he may know the answer. The number M88 268-11. I would hazzard a guess at Feb 1968 build (from the 268) possibly build number 11 for the month? or year? Common practice in late sixties early seventies for some manufacturers was a format that started with State month year - eg V1168 (Victoria November 1968). The M88 kinda puts a big torpedo through my theory. Cheers, Gristy

Hi Gristy, Thanks for your reply,I have already sent Wildmanaus a pm, I'll just wait to herar from him. I guess the M could stand for Murrumba star and not Melbourne, as I think Murrumba stars were made in Queensland. I really don't know anything about this brand. I just don't want to buy a van thinking it's in the right age group only to find out later that it's a 70's van. I might go back with camera in hand and pencile and paper and do a rub over of the serial number just to make sure I got the numbers right. regards Gemma

G'day All, There is a Murumba Star on ebay at the moment... 230164549288. Just the shell, with a starting bid of $140.
Re Gristy's comment above about the numbering system on Viscount drawbars. Following his theory, would the number N353 mean NSW March 1953?? Would Viscounts have been made this early? There are no advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald archives earlier than 1960, although this doesn't confirm or deny the possibility.
Reason I ask is that I missed grabbing a van (by just a few minutes apparently) with this number for $300 recently. It certainly looked a very old Viscount.
Who are the Viscount experts??
cheers, Al.

G'Day Daggsey & Anyone interested A Mate here in brisbane has a Murrumba star with door at the rear. The vans were made at Murrumba Downs on Brisbanes North side, My mate told me that the model with the rear door was what brought the business to its knees.Regards dosse
