Hello Tickos... Thats terrible news. Munmorah and Coledale are the only two established Vintage van gatherings us in the Hunter/central coast/ sydney/ illawarra districts have each year. And now we hear that Munmorah is no more...... I am devastated. We have had some great times down there. Bloody council wowsers. I suppose we can't dwell on the past .. and the sooner we settle on another venue for this weekend in May the better. So hows about we use this thread to bounce around a few alternatives in or around the central coast area so that we dont lose this weekend off our social calander. I know van park rates can be expensive around the entrance/gosford area. and anything closer to Sydney would probably be dearer again. Not sure if people are keen to travel a bit further up the road to a place called East Gresford. There is a basic camping reserve on the edge of the river down behind the showground. About 8 power poles with 4 outlets each , clean modern toilets and $1 hot showers. No camp kitchen . If ya travel a further 20K west there is a good little van park at Lostock Dam. www.caravanparkphotos.com.au/lostock/index.htm Not too sure how many powered outlets they have there nowadays but a very pretty little camping ground with about 12 permanents. So........ let the healing process begin with a good response from you guys with alternatives . If we dont act straight away . It will be yet another opportunity to use our vans ... LOST. Reddo... So sad to hear, I for one had a great time at Munmorah 2008. Regards a new loaction, somewhere in the Hunter Valley area would suit me but any further away from my home (Canberra)would make it too far to travel for a 2 day weekend...........now if it was on a long weekend that could be different. Don't think that the site fees are really an issue but a good location is more important.....wherever it is.

Hi All, What a shame abount Munmorah - I also had a great time in 2008. Ken, with regard to the Hunter Valley. As it happens Alan and I were up the Hunter this weekend at a Car and Rockabilly Event and we stayed at the only caravan park in that area - the Valley Vinyard Tourist Park at Cessnock. A Big Four park. It was $55 for 2 people for 2 nights. I think it was a 4 star. It was very clean and presentable, but very dry due to the drought and situated in the middle of some dusty fields. But great proximity for Cessnock and the Wineries. As for other places - I would suggest that Canton Beach Tourist Park at Canton Beach near Toukley should be close to the top of the list. We stay there 2 or 3 times a year for car events and they are great at accommodating groups. We were last there 3 weeks ago and it was $40 for 2 people for 2 nights. (Indi was also there at the same time, so perhaps he can add his thoughts). Canton Beach Tourist Park is situated right on the lake edge, clean, presentable, away from passing traffic, walking distance to the local Bowling Club so if you want a night out you dont need to drink and drive. ;D ;D I'll put my thinking cap on re other places. Regards Di

There is a camping ground at Patonga Beach right on the Hawkesbury River. Fair sized place. And for those that happen to or can bring along a boat/skis or canoe it provides an added feature for the time spent there. There are some local shops across from the site. For new members that don`t yet have a `van but maybe a boat they can motor straight up beside the site or anchor on the beach or pier. There are facilities available also. cheers

Di My now departed parents lived at Wyongah so I know the Canton Beach Caravan Park well and agree that it is ideally located. The high point for me is the fish and chips from the place next door which are worth driving from Canberra for. Redos Lostock Dam option also looks OK but I don't know that area.

Hi Guys. Yup... had a bit of a rethink. we are better off stayin south a bit from Newcastle. Canton or Patonga sound like good options but bear in mind that we are talking May.. early stage of winter... campfires would almost be a "Must". Otherwise people will soon disappear from any sort of night time festivities in camp. Mind you a stroll to the bowlo for a coupla rums and a touch of socialising would solve that problem. Chippydave stays at Budgewoi caravan park which is only 15 mins from our old Munmorah site and is also on the lake. He might give us a run down on the pros and cons of that park . Reddo

Two shillings worth.........our experiences, Lostock Dam.......no where else to go!, Budgewoi.......the permanent residents think they own the bloody place and as a group we were scattered all over the park (won't go there again!). I like the Patonga/Canton area ideas.......we went twice to Toowoon Bay and found it great, but I don't think you could have a fire there. Keep it central for those down South.

Hi V V's I would like to put forward Bathurst at Easter. :DI know a lot of car makes have their big get togethers at Easter, butttt. It also gives a couple extra days . We are staying in the Pit area for the weekend, and will more than likely all be together. Open fires in the past have not been a problem, (I will do more research in the future to confirm these type of details.) It is powered and there is Festival of Sporting Cars. Even if we go somewhere in May, this weekend in Bathurst is happening if anyone would like to join in. We are also touring the following week and ending up at Mudgee WWWW Festival (another good weekend) I have started another thread with info about the Easter Weekend. All Welcome. Ticko's

Hi Guys, Im glad I had the pleasure to be at Lake Munmora for the last 2 years and if its time to move on well so be it. I do stay at Budgewoi every year but I do see the problem of every one being together,The park is just over 5 mins drive from Munmorra and is currently being rezoned with permanents being asked to leave to create more sites for people like us.We could possible try it in 2010 but I would be keen on Bathurst for easter 2009 for something different .Cheers Dave.

Hi all,
Re: Canton Beach.
I think being together in a group should be possible. I have a map at home of the Caravan Park, so I will have a look at it tonight and double check the qty and positioning of the sites.
Re: Fires - I can ask the question and let you all know.
I'll give them a call tomorrow and get back to you.
Re: Easter at Bathurst.
We will be down at Chrylsers on the Murray at Albury, so sorry can;t make Bathurst.
Regards Di

Hi all, Phoned and had a chat with Canton Beach staff. They gave me a run down of the qty and positioning of all the powered and non powered sites available - oops I left the paperwork at home. From memory the largest area togeher is approx 4 powered and 13 non-powered. But then there are another 3 or 4 areas with between 4 and 7 powered sites. I suppose it will depend on total numbers and also whether some people want to be slightly away from the others - a bit like at Munmorah this year, when some of the group were on one side of the road and the others were together on the other side (in the circle). As for a fire. I asked the question - the answer is no, at present, but it is a questioin that they have raised with council (I think it was council) and so who knows what it may be in May 09. But as mentioned - the club is only a 5 minute walk away, so we can always go there to keep warm. There are BBQ areas on site. They will give us a discount for a group . I'll let you know tomorrow what that is. Regards Di

Hi All,
Further to my message yesterday re: Canton Beach.
Price should be $40 for 2 people for 2 nights for a powered site. They will do a group price of $32 for 2 people for 2 nights for a powered site.
The non-powered price is normally $34 for 2 people for 2 nights - not sure how much that will be discounted by.
When you drive into Canton Beach you can turn left to go into one area or turn right to go into the other area. The 2 areas are seperate but very close to each other and easy to walk between.
As for the number of sites. There is a total of 22 powered and 13 unpowered sites..
The breakdown is as follows;- In one area is 4 powered and 13 non-powered - together. Another 4 powered together - about 6 sites away from the 17 above.
In the other area is 8 powered together. Another 6 powered together.
Hope this helps
Regards Di

Thanks for your replies gents. To clarify things I have attached 2 maps of the 2 areas that I was referring to. I have marked them with red shapes to show where the sites are. That way you can all see how close or far the sites are away from each other. As noone has said "not interested" - presumeably Canton Beach is the go I take it from Reddo's comments that we are looking at the weekend of 15th to 17th May 2009? Someone please confirm. I will then contact the caravan park and double check that the sites are free for that date and then put a hold on them all. I will also then ask what the discounted price will be for the unpowered sites (if they are discounted). Talk soon Di

hello Di Thanks for putting in the effort. I am never much good with actual dates. All i know is my migrating bird ancestory ( the dodo) tells me that i should fly south to a vintage caravan gathering/ nesting ground the weekend after Mothers day ....... Munmorah was held the weekend after Mothersday.. well at least the past 2 years where. From memory the first one was on mothers day Okey dokey .. ya can put me down for site number 326 which is on the corner of Short and lake streets. Us bondy owners have gotta use stealth and cunning to keep the fobbergrossers from gathering enmass and lookin like a mushroom patch With a Bondy in their street it will increase land and house values 200 % I love it when a plan comes together... so far there is me.. and... me.. and good old ... ::)me going. Have flagon of Micky Williams Port , Bottle of bundy O.P....and bag of firewood .. willing to share...........the wood ;D Reddo

Hi jrod Good to see ya surfacing on the new improved ( so they tell me) forum ;D Ya know..... in all of the 54 .65 years i have been draggin my knuckles around in the dust on this earth .I have never once seen an "aluminium tree" I have come to the conclusion that Aluminium is not real.. Its man made from red non magnetic rubbish extracted from dirt. . I think the daggster calls it bauxite .I have looked at a lot of info about minerals too... No where does it mention that aluminium is a "precious metal" Now if ya where talking "Real Material " instead of dirt ya would be talking trees .. aka.. timber. I see these things everywhere. They are a naturally occuring product...I have been hit over the head with pieces of tree. I have stacked my pushbike into trees, I have gotten "out of my tree" on the odd occassion....... So i have made the assumption that they are "real". May i suggest that the only time ya open ya mouth in the future it will be to take out your left foot and insert your right. Ya cheeky young bugger. Site 325 aye. .. i read somewhere that that site was once a non ferrous metal recycle shop... you should be right at home there........ Oh bye the way. I will have a cold beer waiting for ya when ya arrive. Will be good to catch up with you again mate. Reddo

Ya know..... in all of the 54 .65 years i have been draggin my knuckles around in the dust on this earth .I have never once seen an "aluminium tree" then he saidI have looked at a lot of info about minerals too... No where does it mention that aluminium is a "precious metal well reddo, have i got some news for you. check this out Although rare, an occasional aluminum tree can be spotted in the wild. This one was discovered at the Grand Canyon. photo by Ayn Clayborne, 2004 i stumbled across this while netsurfing, so all i can say now is that you owe a lot of people apologies for all the horrible things you've been saying about aluminium not being natural. from the article, i get the impression that, like the wollimi pine, the exact location of this tree is kept a secret until they are cultivated in nurseries. now, regarding that statement about aluminium not beig a precious metal, wikipedia says: "An interesting case of a precious metal that is now common is that of aluminium. Although aluminium is one of the most commonly occurring elements on Earth, it was initially found to be exceedingly difficult to extract from its various ores. This made the little available pure aluminium which had been discovered (or refined at great expense) more valuable than gold." (oh dear, this will reduce reddo to tears when he reads it). now i'm beginning to wonder if fobberglass was originally grown on trees. geoff 'n jude

Di, We will definitely be there, put us down for a site please, up amongst the plys and the tin..........give the public some variation.
I can then explain to them how ingenious man was in developing a product that lasts forever to make a caravan with. He now no longer has to dig in the ground and rape the landscape...... or kill trees to have his caravan.
