Today I went to collect my Mother's Day present....I had a bit of company..... It was located close to Halls Gap we drove through the pouring rain and the Gap greeted us with beautiful sunshine and a welcoming committee..... My new~old Hawthorn.... The metho stove... The kids bunks and peep holes!!! Mum and dads bed/kitchen table... Old Yellow had her name already..... Outside needs some work... We'll have to make another rear window as an aluminium one has been put in at some stage A "peephole" I love her cute little ceiling, apparently this is the original paintwork inside? She is meant to have the blue stripe down the side like KB3's in the Down History Lane thread, so we'll add it when it is time for the repaint. She has a serial number so if anyone knows about those? ?? Cheers, Trish.

Hi Trish, what a great little van! You wouldn't credit the inside looking as good as it does, compared with what you first see on the outside, eh?! Congratulations on covering your first two letters of the alphabet...G for Globetrotter, and H for Hawthorn. My only criticism is that you are going the wrong way in the alphabet. Your second one should have been F for "you-know-what"! ;D However, look forward to seeing your Jennison, Litecraft, etc etc ;D ;D You've certainly taken the plunge full on...good on you! ;D ;D ;D (although your friends in the car have that "Gawd, what are we doing here?!" look on their faces... cheers, Al.

Hi there AL.....guess what............my first Van was a Franklin!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was an early 70's that I renovated to the hilt...I looooved my little Frankie so much and his lil' green stripe down the side, but sadly we had to part =(
Yes, my friends where a bit like that but couldn't argue as it was my mothers day pressie!!! I dont think there will be another VV as my handyman skills are limited and hubby will have had enough by then for sure. I really wouldnt have got another VV but the bunk beds and the little portholes sold me on it and unlike the Globe will not need too much work to tow. I would never get a new van just love the character of the ol' woodies! He told me he wouldnt have paid $20 for the Hawthorn.....and I'm a bit in the doghouse but it was worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the other day we didnt end up collecting Old Yellow as we were not sure of her condition or measurements. Tommorrow being Mother's Day, I just had to have her home by then! So today we went and hired a trailer ($60) from Hamilton (60 K.M.) for the day and Dave and kids and I toddled up there (78 K.M.) trailer in tow to get her. Some gorgeous scenery on the way about 70km from Horsham... First thing we arrived the kids thought that they might test out the beds... Then came out chainsaw to remove her from her resting place for the last 25 odd years..... Tony pulled her out with the Hi-Ace Truck and Dave, Barb and I guided, pushed and pulled and finally she was free.... The kids supervised! Up she went and Barb said her final goodbyes I promised to send her postcards regularly when Old Yellow is on the road.... Tony and Barbs backyard, isn't it divine! Here is a pic of the van in tow from the roof of Barb's underground house..... After a lovely cuppa and a few pieces of Tony's home made Cake and we headed off.....and this is where we ran into trouble Smoke begun to POUR from under the engine and the transmission was slipping so we ended up finding alternate means of transportation to Hamilton...... Apparently we are up for $2 per K.M. 156km (to rescue point and back to Hamilton) 156 X $2= $312 plus whatever is the surcharge for a Saturday? $$$$$$$$$$$ We will find out how much exactly tommorrow, when we go (60K.M.) to get the Van on the car trailer to bring it home from Hamilton (60 odd K.M's) then return (60 K.M.) to get the car on the trailer to bring it home (60 K.M.) and then go back to Hamilton (60 K.M.) to bring the trailer back!!!!And then come home again (60 K.M.). Lotsa lotsa petrol!!! So I am in the preverbial literally and have the most expensive Mothers Day present sitting locked up in the tow truck yard. Kids are tired, Dave is and I had to get my mum to bring us home from Hamilton tonight (I'm gonna have to spoil her BIG TIME tommorrow as she bailed me out for sure on this one)...thank god for the mobile phone and I am so glad it had reception or we would've been fried!!!!!!!!! Well, at least it didn't rain and at least the van came out unscathed but I tell you this is what I get for buying a bloody FORD when I have been a Holden girl my whole life!! Note: some kind of oil splattered all over the rear of the car??? Well, till tommorrow, cross fingers we will get through the day unscathed??? Trish

hi trish don't feel bad about the ford, as will said, they falter sometimes, but at least we ford drivers admit it. our ute was on the back of a truck so many times on the meander, it became known as "the blue heeler". (thanks reddo). here it is the first time on the mornington peninsular (free tow). and here it is one week later at seymour (vic) with the van behind. this tow cost us $3000 to get back to sydney, 12 hours in the tow truck overnight. still luv the ford though. geoff 'n jude

Hi Mark,
We pulled in a favour and got the van home and for some reason the Ford decided that there was never anything wrong and went from Hamilton to Sandford without a problem. Tow cost for yesterday was $330.
I have my eye on a nice HK that has been in an old gals garage for I dont know how many years, so maybe one day she'll be mine. The ford is definately NOT my towcar aspecially after its Hissy Fit!
Hubby is a cabinet maker and has done many fitouts for campers, vans and motorhomes but usually they are state of the art. He seems more enthusiastic today with the pending task ahead or maybe he is just being nice cos' its Mothers Day?
Going through the cupboards in Old Yellow I found popers documenting the re-wiring of the van dated 1971 with Valiant parts and on the reverse of this was wiring details from 1962. I'll scan them and also some more pics soon.
What sort of Van is that you have behind that beautiful ford? The portholes are like mine on the Hawthorn?
Cheers, Trish.
Your ford is quite nice, to say the least, I must say I can't go past a nice bit of chrome be it Ford or Holden!!

Hiya Trish What a great rescue story. I always enjoy reading about how these old treasures ate located and retrieved. especially from far flung farms and propertys. Half the fun of owning an old Bondy ( or any other van) is the hunt. Another bondy saved from the ravages of time and weather. Nuthin' unfamiliar about seein' a Ford on a tilt tray... Its becoming quite common this year.. especially those that tow heavy objects. The first thing a mechanic does when ya mention problems with your auto trans is run thier hand across the bottom of your rear bumper. That "Oily Stuff" is auto trans fluid. They will probably drop the gearbox out and put a new seal kit through it... thats providing you havent completey cooked it... Anyway .. enough of the bad news. That old Hawthorne will do up a million dollars. "Old Yella" will be / is a great van Oh and ... at the risk of startin a war between the Martins and the McCoys ......toss out that late model Ford..and get a pre 80s anything... they all hjad real radiators and gearboxes back then. Holdens Rool OK ;D ;D ;D ;D Reddo

Ha ha ha Reddo, my surname is Martin! But I am a Holden girl and hubby Dave is a Ford man!! I am very happy with the Hawthorn and even after 25 years the tyres pumped up and havent gone flat yet, Tony said they are Chevvy tyres but they say Made in Great Britain? I'll get the numbers tomorrow or take a pic and maybe someone can identify them?
Barb left a few old things in it including an old Billy which we used today at our Mothers Day bonfire! I'll be hunting out an old tow car now (HOLDEN) might just have to go ask the lady about her old HK, it looks in shmick nick. I keep you posted!
Hope everyone had a great weekend, Trish.

How come the FX/FJ Holden wheels were made in Great Britain? Glad to now know what they are, they were certainly made to last is all I can say as they are still holding air! Thanks, Kaybee!
Cheers, Trish.

I measured the van up today (need to make a new rear window) and removed everything inside so I can see the wood for the trees! I had some help today, this is a neighbor's cocky, Eden (she spends more time with me here though)! Under the bottom bunk....

Hi Trish,
If you're looking for suggestions, go with your new name - it's got the photos and posts relating to your two van linked to it. As far as I can see you only posted 10 entries under 'lacemartin' and for whatever reason none of them (apart from your post today) are still in the system, while you have posted 80 entries under 'lacem'.
