Hello to all, have just joined. I have a 1948 boonwood caravan that my wife, 4 kids and I use. It is 14 foot long, 6'6" wide, weighs 1020kg. Fitted new axel, Holden stud pattern with hydraulic brakes and trailer brake lights ( will change to period lights one day) for registration. I tow it with a 1962 Vanguard 6. When I find out how to, I will post photos Regard Shane

Hello Mark, have enjoyed your web site of vintage vans, I have a van and here are some pictures. Dont know what brand it is or if it is homemade. Would you know what brand? The people that I brought it from got it from I beleive from the original owners who told them it was about a 1948 model. It has a full wooden frame with the only steel being the axels, draw bar and angle iron along bolted to the main beams for the springs. I purchased it in April 2004. Had to replace the coupling and axel and fitted hydraulic brakes. Fitted Holden HT pattern which suits 14" wheels. It weighes 1020kg Full bondwoood van with one peice annex ( including wooden poles) It is 14' long and 6' 6" wide. The table folds down to make a bed and has a day nighter at the rear. 2,12 volt lights and 3 seperate 240volt lights Have fitted trailer lights at rear to get it registered. I think it had a kero stove as there is instructions for one in cuboard, when I got the van it has a meters stove/oven. Still works but heavy. I tow it with a 1962 phase3 Vanguard six ( I do have a Vanguard spacemaster in the shed like the one towing joker). Have used it for displays and holidays. Did a week long car tour in 2005 towing it approx 1500 km with wife and 4 kids, highlite was towing across Mt Hotham (Victorian alps) We were on holidays at Warnambool Vic. and met two couples heading home from Mt Gambier with 1960s Sunliners from Newcastle wife liked these vans and said we should sell our and get a Sunliner. Are Sunliners readly available and how much are they worth. We come from 30km from Geelong Victoria. Regard Shane

Hi Shane, and welcome to the forum. That is one FANTASTIC van you have there!! ;D What a beauty! Looks to be in very good condition and well looked after. This van was either made by a very good craftsman (woman?) at home, or is a manufacturer's van. The internal fit-out and external clearance light fittings are not something an ordinary week-end handyman would accomplish. The nearest styles of vans to yours would be the Highway and Skyline brands (check out our History section). Not an exact match, but certainly along the same lines. We also have info there about Sunliners, so by all means get one of these if you wish, BUT KEEP THIS BLOODY VAN AS WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ps. in the top photo, is that another old ali van in the background?? cheers, Al.

Hi Shaneandsimoen That is a nice old bondy. Those big vans do weigh a bit and the old Vangaurd would certainly know it is towing it. The car and van look great together . I know the whereabouts of a Fibreglass "kennedy" caravan near Portland. Very similar to a sunliner but a little better build quality ( In my opinion anyway) . Not 100% certain that the owner will sell it but it would not hurt to discuss the van with him and what his intentions are for it. I checked it out and spoke with him on the way to Mt gambier before easter. It is in very good restored condition. He was calling it a sunliner and it wasnt until i showed Will and Lynn the photo that i realised it was a Kennedy... I am not much into fibreglaas vans but this one is nice. He seemed as though he was sort of considering selling it but did not mention a figure. If you are interested . you can click on my name above my avatar on the left of this message . it will open up a private message page. type in your response and hit send. I can reply with his contact details if you want them . Reddo

G'day Shane and Simoen,
Welcome to the forum. Great to see the photos of your van. Looks like it's in pretty good shape overall.
I second Franklin1's comment - buy a Sunliner by all means, but keep this one as well! ;D ;D ;D Looks like you've got the room for both.

Hi Col, I agree with your thoughts 100 percent! My choice of words was obviously inappropriate. Your use of the word "talented" was more what I was thinking...this van has all the indications of being built by someone who had a lot of talent, as opposed to an "untalented" weekend handyman (which is what I meant with the word "ordinary"). In no way do I intend to imply that home-built vans are of lesser significance than production-built ones. A van made out of old fruit boxes and cut up kerosene tins is still a unique and valuable van, even though it was made by a bloke who didn't know which end of the hammer to hold... Hope this clears things up. cheers, Al.

"A van made out of old fruit boxes and cut up kerosene tins is still a unique and valuable van, even though it was made by a bloke who didn't know which end of the hammer to hold..." Its is obvious from this statement that Al has seen my workmanship..... Thanks mate... i and a lot of other backyard "constructors " are flattered ;D ;D ;D ;D Kero tins are good... The contents are also enjoyable... BURP rEdDo

Hello, thank for the replies, not offended if my van is made by a handyman (women) or if made in factory, hopefully some one might be able to tell me what ( if possible ) what brand it is. How looked ot skyline or highway history, thanks for help, Thanks Mark for putting on photos. The other van in background of photo is a Capricorn 1974-5 build, is father inlaws, been stored at our place for 6 years, no rego good inside, chassis rusty, at moment good storage room for kids toys, think I stuck with it tell he passes to another world. Keep up good work on forum, enjoy reading. Regards Shane

Welcome!! And congratulations on owning such an awesome van Shane. Good to see another fellow Victorian on here too. Mate, dont get rid of the wood van to get a plastic one?? No really, do what you like, but if you decide to do so and then need to dispose of that van please post it for sale here, I dare say there would be considerable interest. If you can, I'd hang on to it (as everyone else has said - but I can appreciate life with a tribe of kids aint always that simple). Any chance you may consider joining us up in coledale (NSW) in October? Or at least bring the van down to Cora Lynn car show in October (Cora Lynn would be approx 50-60 mins the other side of Melb from you). BTW Nice vanguard, good to hear someone using one to pull a van, I have seen a few for sale here and there but had no idea of their towinf capability so didn't consider. perhaps I should have? Cheers, Gristy

I am selling my precious sunliner. Will be putting on ebay this week. I havent used ebay before so need to find the time to work it all out first. I have spoken (email) to 2 members on this site & thought I'd let you all know about my van. I have been procrastinating on putting it up for sale, as i simply love it. I have great dreams for it, however have 3 kids, expecting a new bub soon and selling my farm where i store it under cover. So need to let it go to a new home that will have the time to use it. Needs tyres and I got slack & let the rego run out. Inside is good cond, just needs a scrub,,, outside has a few paint patches peeling & would love a tidy up. I will let you know when i put on ebay with pictures etc. Regards Paula C near Taree NSW
