Hi, I just recently aquired my grandparents old caravan (Not in too bad a condition for having sat out in a paddock the last 14yrs since thier passing away) and would like to identify it. As far as I can remember, they had the van, so I have no idea exactly how old it is. It has 2 single beds at the back, kitchen in the middle, dinette at the front. on the front ther is the faded words "new moon", with what looks like was the companys logo over it. (Which was sort of written in a wave?) Mum thinks it was a viscount, rego papers say "H DALE" any way of identifying the age and make of this van would be greatly appreciated, I am very proud to now own this van, as it has great sentimental value.
Also I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to rejuvinate it, without loosing it personality.
thank you

Hi Paddles, I wouldn't give up on it being a Hilandale van just yet. Is there any chance of you posting a photo of the logo? (To get your photobucket photos to show in your reply, in your Photobucket album, click on the bottom field under the photo to highlight it in blue. Highlighting will automatically copy the photo details. Come back to your reply on this forum, position your cursor where you want the photo to go, and do the usual Paste [Edit - Paste] process. It will paste a string of characters, but when you click the [Post Reply] button it will convert to the actual photo.)
Your initial restoration/rejuvenation should be aimed at just cleaning the outside of the van down. Until you know exactly what condition the van is in, I would go gently, gently with the cleaning. More the broom in the bucket and lots of swishing and rinsing, rather than full on pressure hosing. As you say, this van has great sentimental value, so you need to handle it as if you were a museum curator.
Keep coming back with more progress info and photos as you work through it... cheers, Al.

see if this works? the logo as stands, will try to clean it up, but the moss will probably remove the logo when it comes off.

Hi Paddles, as we've said above, we haven't accumulated very much information yet about Hilandale caravans. There is likely to be a member somewhere who has an old book with more information about them. The reality is that this forum is where you are most likely to find information about old vans, which can take a bit of patience sometimes. The logo wave could easily be interpreted as a "hill and dale" graphic. Usually vans have a logo at both the front and rear, so is there another one on your van? The "NEW MOON" might relate to the model name (?). My best guess, looking at the aluminium cladding pattern on the sides, is to place your van in the mid-to-late 1960s or later. Photos of the inside would help, as cupboards from that era were made from paper-faced patterned timber (either fake woodgrain or light colours). Also worth checking the drawbar for any stamped numbers (around/just back of the coupling). Go steady, steady cleaning the moss off the logo. There might just be a faint outline of the original wording still there.
Enjoy what's ahead of you... cheers, Al.

Interesting bit of info, the wheel rims, which needed replacing, come from a valient (Not that easy to find) work is progressing, on the exterior anyway. the drawbar has been cleaned and repainted, the hubs bearing and brakes replaced, and now the rims and tyres. Not too long now and we'll be able to start the inside. ;D

Hi paddles, if you haven't already noticed in the Hilandale history thread, I discovered another Hilandale van currently for sale on ebay (listed as Hill'n Dale, item 150236104356) and "borrowed" the photos. Seems to be the same shape/size/interior as yours, but an earlier model. Will perhaps give you a chance to compare interiors and give you some idea of how the inside of yours might have looked originally.
Sounds like some hard work on the van is starting to show good results. Good on you both ;D ;D
(Can't help with info on the Val wheels...more knowledgable people here than me on that subject...)
cheers, Al.
