Hi Everyone, I am new to these boards and am in the finishing stages of renovating what I think is a late 1960's Franklin caravan. I thought this would be a relatively easy process and am encountering just how tricky this can be without a compliance plate and or welded chassis numbers. I could really do with some assistance in navigating this process. After visiting a local mechanic who Blue Slips (NSW) he gave me the run down on how tricky this could be, I then went to Services NSW and was informed about how there is really not much info on their systems due to the updates over the decades and that I would need a TR Number. I found my beauty in a paddock in Nimbin, it has no papers, rego plate or other identifying marks that show its origin or series, in fact I'm not even sure of the make and year of it to be honest. I've spent quite a pretty penny doing her up and obviously I would like her to be legal for the roads. I haven't yet read the threads but I'm hoping that someone can assist and give me a basic run down on how to get this over the line, any help would be very much appreciated and I'm keen to join the fraternity of vintage and retro van lovers who tow around this great country of ours. Thanks in advance

Hi macpaul, I have put pics of your van on Facebook. It’s a Culberts Family13 built from plans in the 1970s Culberts build a caravan book. They were originally bondwood built with a single wall method for lightness, but a few were made with aluminium and wind out windows at a later date. The range of Culberts vans still pop up occasionally on here and sale sites. They start with the Cruiser, then Family series up to 20ft and a Monolite that looks like a bullett,if you look down history lane on here there are a few already for you to check out. Hope this helps hughdeany

Hello & welcome. I don't know much about the complexities of registering a van in NSW but I believe It's now an Aus wide process to apply for a vin/chassis number if your van does not have one.No longer your local roads authority. This is to prevent re birthing of WOVs etc. It would be great if somebody in the know could confirm what authority it actually is & the process! I just did some googling & I'm more confused than ever. Anyway, here's a link to Culbert's build a Caravan vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/13867/culberts-build-caravan

In reply to SGTL, Due to our Walden being out of rego for decades, I had to have a vin & go with the guise of a homebuilt, narrowly avoiding the cost of an engineer's certificate due to a new drawbar. (Qld)
