170820Su-CanterburyVic.-AutoClassico-1970-Fiat850T.campervan-RoderickSmith The 850T was produced over 1966-76. It was smaller than rival forward-control vans, important for congested Italian towns and cities. This campervan style dates from the late 1950s, popularised by VW Kombi and Bedford Dormobile conversions. Hi Rodericksmith, Thanks for posting the photos of the Burwood caravan. They are so interesting to see. Colin345 is a member of the Forum and told us a bit about his caravan in 2016 here. I was particularly interested to see the full receipt because it adds to the story of the caravan which appears to be from Colin345's grandfather, then transferred to Colin345's father, and now he is the custodian. I've added the photo of the full receipt to a post about the van on the DHL Burwood thread. Don Ricardo

This is something of a mystery. It isn't my photo, and it isn't from a newspaper, and it isn't a friend's caravan. Normally when I download, I include the source and caption information as part of the file name. It seems to be a rally in NSW. The photo was taken in March 2013, but the post seems to be 2015, and the download was then or more recent. Roderick

Roderick Smith G'day Rodericksmith, That's an eclectic group of caravans, eh? As it happens, I can tell you a bit about each of them. - The Nuriootpa photo is the second 'motor caravan' built by Gerard C "Pop" Kaesler in South Australia in 1931. It was built on a 1929 Dodge 6 light truck chassis. Kaesler and his family used the caravan for quite an extensive tour (for the times) from Nurioopta to Brisbane which included entertaining the Prime Minister for afternoon tea on the front lawn of the Old Parliament House in Canberra. For a number of years Kaesler's first and second 'motor caravans' were often referred to as the first Australian caravans. We now know that they weren't - others preceded them - but they certainly are unique in Australia in that they were built like miniature houses with working spouting (to catch rain water), etc. The first of Kaesler's 'motor caravans' is on display at the Goolwa Museum in South Australia. This second 'motor caravan' is still on view at the Nurioopta Tourist Park, but is now in a large shed with glass walls. You can read some more about Kaesler's caravans here.
- The caravan in the second photo labelled 'caravan-1950's' is in fact quite a bit older. It is the very first Don caravan built by Don Robinson in Oakleigh, Victoria in 1934. It was originally intended for family use, but before it was completed was purchased by the local milkman, E L Gates. You can read some of the history here.
- The ex Douglas DC3 semi-trailer caravan was built in 1949 by Alan Fry of Geelong using a Douglas Dakota/DC3 fuselage. There's more info here. Quite a few caravans were built from caravan fuselages and/or components after the war, and this was one of them.

Parents of Coburg North Primary pupils are being treated to barista-made coffee at the school gates once a month as part of an initiative of the school's Parents and Friends group. Co-president of Parents and Friends, Tamara Heath, said that the coffee mornings were an opportunity for parents to connect during the hectic drop-off and pick-up times. “Parents often gather in little pockets in the schoolyard after drop-off to have a chat and we were looking for a way to bring all those groups together,” Ms Heath said. Vagabond Coffee, owned by one of the parents, runs the coffee morning, and so far it has been a huge success with mums dads and grandparents queuing to get their hands on a cup. “Coffee is indisputably a key component of parenting,” Ms Heath said. “It is a hard job and would be near impossible without a bit of a caffeine boost every now and then”. 201002F-From the website. 571201Su Walhalla (Vic.) - caravan - NeilSmith / Roderick Smith My father printed this on eggshell paper, which results in horrible speckling on a scanner. My dust-removal software makes it worse. I have cleaned the caravan itself, but not the surrounds (about 2 hours needed). I can't find the negative to make a fresh start. Roderick

Hi Rodericksmith,
I'm interested in the 1957 photo of the van at Walhalla. Do you know anything about the van, or was it just a (more or less) random shot your father took?
The reason I ask is that it almost looks like the rear window has diamond shaped leadlight. If so, that and the shape of the van would indicate that it is a Don.

It is a small crop from a random shot, the general view from an elevated vantage point. I can't blow it up any further. Roderick.
