Roderick Sat.5.10.19 Melbourne 'Herald Sun'. Dogs and caravans. MICHELLE ROSE There is no such thing as a ruff day for these poochies, even when their owners hit the road for holiday. That's because more than two-thirds of travellers now take their furry friends along for the ride, according to research by Caravan Industry Victoria. Lara Shannon, co-host of TV show Pooches at Play, said that owners were increasingly reluctant to leave their pets behind. "They have really become part of the family now, and people want to be able to take them on family holidays”, she said. "Other reasons are being nervous about leaving their pets with people, or not finding a pet sitter, or the cost of finding a pet-sitter.‘ Dogs could provide safety and added companionship and added safety for solo travellers", Shannon said. The TV presenter and canine sidekick Darcy will roll out their best pet travel tips at the Melbourne Cavavan and and camping expo at Sandown Racecource this weekend And there's no need to leave your best friend at home — dogs are welcome at the event, which showcases the latest in caravan and camping vehicles and accessories. melbourneleisurefest.com.au 191005Sa-Melbourne'HeraldSun'-airstream.caravan 200728Tu-Fairfax-Domain-Airstream-a&c.

This could well belong to a forum member. It has a kitchen across the front. I'd be interested to know the layout: a four-seat dinette would be extravagant, and only two berths. Was the layout juggled to be three berths, with one longitudinal bunk? Roderick 121118Su-HCVC-Sandown-small.caravan-RoderickSmith

G'day Rodericksmith, That's an interesting little van your saw at Sandown back in 2012. I don't think we've seen it on the Forum. The closest I can find to it is a NSW Clipper Nine-3 model. It has pretty close to the same shape and the front windows look almost identical if you look at the examples here. There isn't a side window on the van you saw, no hatch in the door, and the wheel arches are a different shape, but perhaps it is an earlier version of the Clipper? I checked out a couple of other possibilities, such as the smaller Castle vans, but none are as close as the Clipper. The Clipper Nine-3 was a three berth, so two single beds towards the back and a single bed at the front using the table laid down between the seats. Don Ricardo

This is a crop from a Rose postcard reproduction posted to a railway group. The new railway and road bridges were completed in 1955, as part of enlarging Sugarloaf to form Eildon. The old pair were submerged, as was the town. The car seems to be a ~1954 Ford Customline. 1950s-BonnieDoon(Vic.)-caravan-Rose.postcard-ss.jpg Roderick

G'day Rodericksmith, That's an intriguing caravan in your last post. No-one has yet been able to work out its origins. We've got it listed in the 'Caravans Yet to be Identified' thread with some additional photos of it here. Don Ricardo

Hi all, I’ve always thought this van was home made due to the interior angles and cupboard doors and frames being so well made. The exterior looks like a copy of earlier 60s-70s rounded shapes and the extra cost the double hopper windows would have been over standard singles, from the pics it looks like a beautifully hand made van. Cheers hughdeany

"120506Su - Lake Goldsmith (Vic.) - gypsy caravans - Roderick Smith The site houses a set of sheds / workshops for private owners and clubs. People come up whenever they want to work on their vehicles and equipment, and stay in their own caravan. Twice per year, the site has a public open day when everyone is present on the same day, and guest vehicles are brought in. I've been to a few, including the 100th rally, larger than usual. Roderick

I'm still hunting for more of my vintage caravans: they are scattered through my extensive collection, and most before 1999 aren't scanned. There are two vintage ones in this set on my flickr account. www.flickr.com/photos/13175590@N00/50288413966Roderick

G'day Rodericksmith, The little cream Gypsy Gem is owned by forum member John. It took him a while to identify it, and it required a total rebuild, but you can read about it here. The ambulance next to the Gypsy is belongs to John's father, I believe. They have an interesting collection of cars and caravans. Don Ricardo

FAMILIES are relishing the chance to enjoy Covid-safe camping and to support regional businesses all across the state this Easter. Mother of three Naomi Brabender, from Diamond Creek, said she had camped with her family at Halls Gap almost every Easter for the past 10 years. "We weren't able to visit in 2020. and our trip was cut short in 2021, so we're really enjoying being back this year. There are so many walks to do. and the kids are always on their bikes," she said. Ms Brabender is also making sure she supports the local businesses that "did it tough" during Covid. "We're visiting local restaurants, checking out the zoo. The kids love it, they make a new friend every day." Mum of three Kim Wilmink, from Frankston, is also spending the weekend camping, west of Ballarat. "This is our first time at Lake Burrumbeet. and it's lovely: we really like trying out different camping spots." Ms Wilmink said. Her family bought a new caravan at the start of the year, and they try to go out every six weeks.
Jun 3 2022 The rules for travelling with pets in Australia: Airlines, hotels and more. Paul Chai CARAVANNING AND CAMPING Campgrounds have long been the most dog-friendly options for people who want to take their pet around Australia. Though not all campgrounds are pet-friendly, there will be a much higher percentage of parks that will take pets than holiday homes, motels or hotels. A young woman setting up camp in the wilderness with her trailer Photo: iStock [right-hand door: USA photo?] BEFORE YOU GO Ask the park operator if there is any additional cost to have your dog stay at the park, or if they require a bond as some places do put extra charges on for cleaning. You might also need to check if there is a size limitation placed on your pet, or if there is a limit to the number of dogs that are allowed on one site, if you own multiple pets. A common size cap is 10 kilograms, though it is usually an arbitrary limit so it can be worth calling ahead to check. KEEPING SAFE Be mindful that it's common for fox, or wild dog bait to be set in bushland areas, so check with the local council to determine if this may be a risk. If worried, make sure that your dog is muzzled when it is not in your direct line of sight. KNOW THE RULES Some parks have specific areas that they might want you to stay in so they can keep the pets away from people who are not so animal friendly. Most parks won't let you take animals into the shower or food prep area so make sure you can leave your pet safely alone for those times. STAYING THERE One of the benefits of camping is there are a few campsites adjacent to national parks where you can have pets. For example, Cape Conran Coastal Park in Gippsland (parks.vic.gov.au) is run by Parks Victoria but allows pets. This stunning coastal camping area, where each camp spot has its own fire pit, allows dogs as long as they are on a lead and is metres from the beautiful bay of Sailors Grave that gave its name to the local boutique brew. INSIDER TIP Some caravan parks may have "pets on application" on their website or brochure, this is just a way for owners to reserve the right to say "no" if they don't like the sound of your pet. Hi Rodericksmith, True, not everyone has an SUV. That's the beauty of vintage caravans. You don't need to have an SUV to tow one! Lots of caravan makers built vans that could be towed by smaller cars of the 40's, 50's and 60's. There were even some designed to be towed by Minis, Morris 1100's and Austin 45's. Don Ricardo
