The variety of tow couplings is never ending ….......aye? This coupling is on what we think might be a 1930's caravan that you can see if you click HERE. You notice it has over ride brakes and a threaded nut that would screw into something like THIS to hold the ball in contact with the socket…............. maybe ? Cobber.

G'day humpyboy, I just had a look at your safetee minor thread and couldn't find a decent photo of the coupling ..... but sort of remembered we did mention it when you first got the van Went looking and found it on page 6 reply # 75 of this tow coupling board, but we didn't make mention of it's brand back then. All's well now and I've added it to the indexCobber.

G'day Gordon, Bit of a worry that one aye? It's supposed to look like this beautifully restored one that Reddo is going to keep on his van. There are quite a few examples of it on this thread but Reddo's is the loveliest. Made by Hendersons. Cobber

A modified Gem 1 7/8'' coupling. For some reason the bloke didn't like the pin through the holes locking device so he came up with this method..... the original Gem coupling is on page 3 reply # 39 and page 4 reply # 48 The override brake and its hand brake is a bit different too Hand brake operated You can see the way the original hand brake operated back on page 4 reply # 51 Cobber

In the words of Monty Python "Here comes another one!" Now ours is not paticularly old, or interesting, but its different to all so far. Similar to Westco this is a Trigg Bros S.A. Not original, I guess, because of the other mounting holes. ORC 50 A97 Whadda you know. Still in business www.triggbrs.com.au/professorq29

Oooo Cobber, shiney, shiney I didn't recognise it with the hydraulics. I looked through before I posted but....I was beginning to think every van has its own unique coupling. Professorq29

Not original, I guess, because of the other mounting holes. Hi Professorq and Cobber, You are correct in saying that the coupling on your Cadet is not original, Professorq. In fact I think it has probably been replaced at least twice. I'm guessing the current coupling was installed by the owner immediately before you. Without wishing to offend the owner at the time, I'm now going to show you both something really scary, at least to my eyes! See what you think. This is the coupling that was on the van when it was sold to your predecessor... I'm not sure how it worked. You can see a bit more of the coupling from other angles in this clip: It appears to be a Treg/Trigg style coupling married to your garden variety trailer ball coupling. As far as I know Don did not fit Treg style couplings to their vans, which is why I said that I thought the coupling on the Cadet has been replaced at least twice. Don Ricardo

G'day Don R. Thanks for showing us that coupling, it does pay to have a Don Tragic watching all things Don related The coupling does look to be a bit of a worry aye? ….but to look on the bright side I suppose it must have worked for awhile..... until the rego man spotted it, or they saved up enough money to invest in a proper Trigg coupling. Thanks for the video too Don R. Cobber.

Two more tow couplings we haven't seen before. “Tow Tru” 30 cwt with an 1 7/8'' socket. “BBC” coupling...... not sure but I think it had an 1 7/8 socket too. Cobber.

G'day Cobber, Thought these couple of pics need to be in this thread. Coupling is in a 1963 "Orford" ally van. A close look and you can see that the slide has been welded so that it can't move, the owner had electric brakes fitted and reckons he didn't need the overrides. Cable hand brake still works. Cheers Bob and Jacqui

You're right Bob 'n Jacqui, It does deserve to be here because your photo shows the ball that goes with it..... and it's good to see the owner was determine to retain the old coupling We have a few examples of this coupling in the thread but........ I don't think we know who made 'em.......... yet Cobber.

The coupling that was on our Skyline: Won't be using it (it isn't in great condition underneath) but will be keeping it - any takers as to date and / or if its the original? Cheers Doug & Tracy. I have the same 2.1/4" S.L. coupling on my 1959 Coronet, except it doesn't have the handle welded on top. Can anyone suggest where to go for a replacement 50mm coupling with the same bolting pattern? Thanks, Paddy

G'day Paddy I just took the old coupling down to a trailer specialist (I was in Port maquaries at the time) and picked up this Trojan replacement It was very close to the original hole spacings, I filed out the holes a couple of mm each to get it to go, its been there ever since without dramas. Cheers Doug

Dymwood 2 ¼ '' Coupling as seen on Marks little old 1958 Clipper Tandem. 50MM Ball equals 1.968 inches. 2 inch ball might still be too small for 2 ¼ coupling Cobber.
