Wow Reddo, Your Teardrop makes mine look like a breadbox on wheels! All those gadgets and what??? Carpet! I just had an idea for your overhead rollerblind problem... I assume the roller blind you are going to use has a piece of light timber dowel in the bottom to weigh it down? Ideal if you are using it conventionally as the weight holds the blind from flapping... If you are using a cut-to-size type of roller blind allow about an inch or two for the timber dowel to stick out each end of the blind and use a couple of those little eye hooks they use for that stretchy white curtian cord Available at any hardware Bumrings or Spotlight Then attach two lengths of the white stretchy curtain cord to the roof to run parrallel to the sides of the blind and have it pass through the little hooks on each end of the blind you fitted. Now when you open and close the blind the little hooks will run up and down the two lengths of stretchy cord and keep it in place. Hope you understand mate... Its a simple idea and will work ;D Cheers Greg

Hi Ray,
I got the magnetic strip from an industrial supplier in Sydney, but you could just look up "magnets" in the Yellow Pages to find something more local for yourself. They sold all sorts of magnetic materials - strips of varying widths, sheets, tiny magnets like peas to go in latches and great big ones for handling sheets of steel.
A supplier would be able to give you advice on what weight a particular product can carry. However, rather than magnets to replace curtain rods have you considered that plastic-coated stringy stuff? The curtains in our van are hung up with this and the ones at the back window (which has a big slant) have it top and bottom to hold the curtains at the right angle.

Love it ,Love it, love it. What a brilliant bunch of minds we have out there . Belinda.. "Magnets" good idea and i could throw the knives and forks in the air when i finish wiping up and they could all stick to the magnets on the roof.. 2 problems solved with one idea. Veedub nut... "stretchy things" with cup hooks . well described mate , i know exactly what you mean and its a good idea too. can use the stretchy things for pants braces if the elastic goes in my strides Ray... The queenslander with his "shutter" ideas . trust a queenslander to come up with a heritage shutter idea. had thought of something similar myself ray.problem is when i wake up in the horrors lookin up at the shutters i will think i am in the hull of a convict frigate on my way back to England. You are all required to be at the shed of invention this coming monday morning at 7.00am for your induction. You can all start work immediately as apprentice inventors Pay rate will be 4 shillings and 4 pence a week. No lunch breaks and all brilliant ideas shall not be shared with other workshop staff. With all these great ideas floating around i reckon you lot would make great employees .. .. and me rich once i patent your ideas . Have given the 'Roof curtain" some consideration and ... i aint gunna have one . I figure seeing as though the TD measures a bit over 6' to the top . it would be darn near impossible for anyone to see in through the top window anyway. so... all i am gunna do is give it a double application of dark window tint. should be enough to keep inside the TD dark and cool on bright sunny days and still let enough light in on cloudy days to see where i am crawling. I scored some old aluminium flyscreens the other day. gunna cut them down to size and use the 4 locator pins to hold them in place on the roof and front windows. Paint it dark green so ya cant notice it aint made of wood. Anyone bought brass gauze for a flyscreen lately. I bet it isnt cheap . I am slumming it using aluminium frames for flyscreens but i draw the line at using "fibreglass mesh ;D". Ok .. you lot have past the first test for apprentice inventors . todays exam question is . "How do i make round top screen doors for either side of the TD???" No points for saying "Use those coloured plastic streamer thingys" they are direct cousins of those evil plastic shower curtains ...... and i hate them. i always get tangled up in them when i come home drunk.( the streamer things ,not the shower curtain) Your answers must be in your own handwriting, showing all calculations in the left margin No spelling mistooks No copying Belindas answer Short West Australians and people south of Albury are allowed 2 minutes extra due to the time difference and other handicaps Your time starts................................Now Reddontcheat.

Hey Reddo - a real challenge u have given us here!! How about rectangular sliding screen doors fited to internal sliding tracks painted the same colour as the walls. You could even use that "securimesh" so nobody can look in while you're havin a look in! That's my contribution. What about youse others??? Ray

Hi Reddo, I am waaaay slow on this thread, only noticed yesterday the response to me being in suspenders over whether or not you'd registered the TD. The interior looks gr8!! Bit of a worry that I have been kept in suspenders all this time ;D As for your screen doors, well that would depend on the size of the curvature. But I have two solutions: 1. the modern boring way - buy a sheet of ply wood (probly 7 ply, nice n thick) use your existing doors as template to cut outer shape, and then cut out the inner side of the frame - plenty of opportunity here for some artwork (or fret work??) in the corners of the frame - perhaps something along the lines of the speaker covers in the kitchen. When ya finish, nice coat of paint, attach flywire, and some hinges etc. 2. The 'Arold special - scrounge around for a piece of round timber the right size (- perhaps the steering wheel of an old sail boat? or mebe an oak wine barrel lid?) cut in half then attach to lower frame work (also made from recycled timber) attach flyscreen hinges etc. Full skematics and dimensions have been drawn up and dispatched by carrier pigeon today. Tinnie ;D

Hi Trendsetters One of the biggest headaches i have had with the Arty-fishoil TD is coming up with a name for it. ( reddo??.. headaches.??. yeah right) For almost 12 months i have been subconscie... subconk. ....ummmmm ... tossing around in the back of my mind different names. There has been some classics . "tumblewood", "Tumblewood tourer","Goodwood special", "The drovers dog.".. cause he's always tagging along behind" , 'Rolling splinters" "The Hollow Log Hilton", " Mildred" .. caus she's matildas sister and i was gunna call the Red Morris "George".. hence "george and mildred". "Cozn".. dictionary says..."Cheat" ( cobber would have loved that) "The VAN from snowy river" "The VAN from Ironbark".. cause its made of wood ;D Anywho.. with wintersun closing in fast i figured i better come up with a name and book the bro in to do some signwriting/ christening for me . I went to the swapmeet yesterday and we agreed to have the van home by 1.00pm so he could "do his thing" on the van. I still hadnt made up my mind as i drove back up the drive. Jeff turned up about 5 minutes later and said "Well whats it gunna be" I figured that i could have "a statement on the back" and "the name " up the front. Soooooo we dragged out the paints and decided on a few "Reddo van fleet colours" I havent seen my old 10'6" castle van on the road since i sold it to a bloke up Grafton somewhere a few years back , so i figured i had copywright on this for the back........ Suppose it shoulda been "Just Croozn 2" Better to have a Kangaroo splattered on the back of the van than on the front of your car aye?? But ya still havent told us what ya called it Reddo Ok.. 'ere yas go.. "The Splinter Hilton" Mind you.. "The van from snowy river" came a close second. Maybe i'll save that or one of the other names for the"fifth wheeler' when i build it?? Also managed to finish fitting up the spare wheel that Canberra Koala Ken sent me ( Thanks again mate). certainly added to the towball weight. i guess it has added about 10kg to the existing towball weight of 10kg so... no worries about the axle not being in the right place for a TD then eh!!!! Those two giant cable ties ya can see wrapped around the wheel are just a bit of added security in case anything gives up due to metal fatigue. Scarey to think what a runaway 15Kg wheel would do if it come adrift from under the drawbar. I filled the van up with swap meet goodies and took it for a gallop down the expressway to Gosford for a "trial 110kph wintersun run". I got flagged down twice by people telling me the rear hatch was flapping in the breeze. secured it with rope for the rest of the trip down and back. gunna fit a coupla old port latches to hold it shut. i got asked by 400 would i sell them the van... when i said no. I got asked by 399 would i build them a van There is definitely a market for replica vintage vans out there So guess whos thinkin about retiring and making a living outta sell imitation TD's.....well at least they have gotta be better and cheaper than those horrible fobberglass things comin outta germany Meanwhile Eddy da yoot is as excited as a dog with two tails. he tells me that with his new "kingy burneroffa 186" he's ready for the trip... Just hurry up and finish packin' the roo van and we will " Get his motor runnin.. head out on the highway... looking for JBJs joint.. and whatever comes our way2 more sleeps Ed.. settle down Reddoldropsrgr8

Lotta water under the bridge since that last post in June 2007. I sold the van to Rob... Earlees bro in sydney earlier this year. He took it home and kept it in his neighbours shed until Coledale this year. Rob took it to Coledale and set it up with an advert on it "/For Sale". I went up and checked it out... bought back a few memorys but i was determined to move on and not be tempted into buying it back. A few weeks went by and Earlee rang me while all the qld mob was at Canungra last weekend. "C'mon Reddo... ya know ya want it back.. ya missin it..." and a whole heap of mushy stuff was laid on me. I said NO and hung up...... the rest of the week it gnawd away at me. should i ,or shouldnt i.... Anyway a long story short. I rang Rob and we struck a deal. I went to Sydney and reclaimed the old splinter Hilton back around 8.00am this morning. Towed it home... then realised i had to find somewhere for it to live.....It looked like rain so i stuck it in the shed...... So.... what now... whats the plan ... i just sat there staring at it Out with the spanners, and screwdrivers and rip everything off it...... Then out with the sander and.... get stuck into the paint. Guards come off tomorrow. Whole thing is getting a make over. This is what happens when ya havent got a van resto on the go... ya get withdrawals and start attacking things Reddo

figured it would not take long before you got back to the tools and creative bit.
did not think it would be a case of attack an earlier creation.
look forward to seeing what you have planned for it.

vvvvvvvvvvvvvrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmm zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzmmmmmmmmmmm whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Thar ya go all pulled apart and sanded.. Thats the noises ya heard jist a minute ago. Sanders , drills and the the third noise is me whizzin over to the beer fridge.... As promised i 'avent fallen orf ma perch.. iz been hard at it ( well between drinks anywho) Got stuck into it with the 40 grit in a 1/3rd sheet vibrator and went hard on any signs of flaking paint etc. Ripped the lid off a tin of pink primer and went around spot patchin the bare bits. Then back on the sander with 80 grit all over. Its urinating down rain here tsarvo but the shed of invention is well sheltered from the inclem... inklimem..... ummmmm... it can p!ss down all it likes and the workers stay dry. So...... armed with a 2" brush, a short napped roller and the will to make a mess, i cut loose on the Fake-tee-Dee and slopped on a few Litres ( ethnic for points in the old imperial money... ummm fluid measurement ) of oil based undercoat . So... 'eres where i am at tonight... See its grown chicken legs just like Mildred did when i jacked her up. Gunna take a few days for the paint ta dry and i can get back on it with the sander....( while i am typing the rain is getting heavier)... Will knock all the dilberrys off that coat and go again with another coat of undercoat... wait for that coat to dry and repeat until i get a reasonably smooth surface. Heres a tip. when ya buying ply , Buy the best quality exterior ply ya can afford..This stuff is Ok but it has shown some signs of "opening up" where the the top layer of ply grain runs across the radius instead of with the radius.. if that make sense So while the paint is drying i will turn my attention to my latest aquistion.... A Norton Commando fastback. ( Oil leaks ignored .. lies about speed and reliability encouraged.).... the pommy bike worlds equivelant to the HK Monaro in 1968... standing 1/4 in 13 secs at around 105mph .. top speed a tad under 120mph . Got it passed for historic rego with our club on the weekend. Goes like stink. Hard to stay focussed on van makeovers with this laying around the shed... The TD is lucky its raining otherwise i would be out on a tune up run ;D More on the TD later in the week. Gunna go chase some colour cards. Reddo

Reddo, You amaze me - I can never predict what you are going to get up to next... ...but then, that's why I read your posts!! I'm looking forward to seeing how the TD ends up this time. Hmmm...maybe it's got something to do with the Norton? A bikewagen maybe?? Don Ricardo

Reddo, fantastic work as always mate, I love reading your posts as I'm guarenteed a laugh in each one. Also I watch in amazement at what you do with these beautiful little vans. I do think it is a bit of a shame your re - restroring a van as I am sure there are vans out there that need your help more than the splinter hilton. In saying that though I am keen to see what you have planned for the old (new ;D) girl.
If it were mine I would go early holden 13" with standard caps and white walls, white with a flash down the side. But that's just me I know the look has been done a million times before but I love it.

Again is well done Reddo.
I think the grey undercoat look is fabulous. I guess you are going against the trend of restoring a deplorable old thing into a treasure by taking a treasure and De-restoring it. Is this going to become your much flaunted Rat Van?
By the way can I apply for membership to the Bondwood Preservation Society. I know that both my vans are Masonite but I figure that is pretty close. I would really like a jacket and badge!
cheers, Leigh.

G'day Reddo, I agree almost totally - if not 100% - with everything you said in your post this morning, which has since disappeared. The stories about the discovery and restoration of vans - even the re-restoration of newly built TD's - the pics from events and outings, the camaradarie between V V'ers, and the humour which arises out of all of that, is what greases the wheels of the forum. The forum would be a pretty dry and uninspiring old place without it. At the same time - as you indicated - the recording of such bits of historical info as we can uncover has some value because people like knowing the background to their vans, and the generation of people who built the vans we all enjoy are fast leaving us, very sadly. Hopefully, there is room for all of these elements in the forum and we need to ensure that one element never swamps the others. Reading back over what I've written, I think I've just repeated what you said - but not as eloquently as you!! Oh well, perhaps I'll stop trying to be philosophical and just sit back and wait to see what you end up doing with that TD of yours. Hmmm...Maybe he's going to cover it in aluminium foil and try and outshine Will and Lyn's Airstream?? That'd be cool. Don Ricardo

Hi vanophiles ;D Well .. just finished repairing the fence to keep those pesky fobbercows out. Washed the shovel and the paddock is lookin onkey dorey again.. Managed ta get a bit done on the TD today. Bought 3 lengths of J mould to use on the roof this time. When i built the TD in the first place i finished the side wall to roof join so that it was a flush join. Didnt want to use any edge mould. This proved to be a mistake . With movement comes cracks in the wood bog . It wasnt bad but it was noticable. So i decided to go with the traditional method this time. With the J mould set up on a plank . i set about polishing it before i drill and fit it to the TD. I made a mistake when i was restoring Rosie. I drilled and fitted the mould and then decided i would polish it. End result was a shiney mould with a heap of grey crap all over the new paint work. When ya get this j mould stuff it has a heap of fine scratches and scuff marks on it. They transport the stuff in bundles so it gets knocked around a bit. So i attacked it first up with turps to clean any sticky gunk off. Then i went over the scratches with a bit of fine steel wool. Just applying enough effort to remove the scratches without carving into the alloy too much. After that i used kitten No:2 to cut the fine steel wool scratches out...even tried Goddards glow at this stage but No:2 is coarser. Finally finshed it off with a product i use on my bike crank cases etc. Its called "Purple" and brings alloy up like chrome. No gut busting either ... just rub on and keep on rubbing lightly until the stuff drys out leaving a chrome like finish. Was contemplating measuring, cutting , drilling holes to dry fit the moulds when the bro turned up around lunchtime After a brief discussion i figured i would stand back and let him loose with the paint and roller. Its been blowing a gale here today and there was all sorts a stuff in the air. So we worked on it inside the shed. Managed to get a good topcoat on the old ... umm... ::)young girl. Jury is still in deliberations as to colour scheme. I keep leaning back towards the old reddo fleet colours. Maybe only 2 colours instead of three ?? We are having a bit of an "In Shed" movie show on Monday night. Neither of us are smart enough to figure out "photoshop" on the computer... So we have come up with the next best thing to experiment with colours and side flashes etc. Gunna set an Overhead Projector in the shed of Invention and use transperancies with the outline of the TD on them. and project it on the side of the TD with the lights turned off in the shed . Draw different shaped side stripes /flashes on the clear transperancy and see how they look projected onto the side of the van. If it aint quite right ya just wipe the felt pen lines off the transperancy with metho and redraw the shape until it is right. Once we are happy wth the shape we will simply plot the curves onto the side of the TD with pencil dots and then mask off to suit that shape.... Sure will beat drawing all over the side of the van with soft pencil until we strike a good looking pattern.. strips, arrows, flames who knows... its gunna be like a bloody colouring in competition Will take a few photos of some of the designs on the side of the van at Monday nights movies... Talk to ya's again then Reddo
