Keep at that TD...................you legend you.

Hi All Aliens have been evicted from "The Shed of Invention" ... Just had to start one of my pommy bikes and fumegate them out. What i have found with this project is that if i force myself to work on it , I make stuff ups.... and stuff ups can be expensive. So with this week on holidays i have just wandered in the shed when i feel like it and do a bit then walk away. Take the missus shopping and get in the way. Extend the chook pen well the chooks enjoy the new found green grass. Anywho progress is being made and i am lucky i kept as much merantie and bits and pieces as i could from the old bombing target van. The bits have come in handy. Had a bit of a pick at my "rear end" and started on the kitchen. Heres a picha of wot ya average ice chest looks like naked I saved all that soft hairy board stuff from the old alloy van as well as the stuff from the van i rescued the goodies from at Valla park back in June. About now this bloke with broken hips turned up doin' all these fancy moves Reckons he new all about the 60s and was a popular singer. Kept tellin me " dont you... step on my blue suede shoes" ....Wanted one for the money.. two for the show... three to get ready... Then bugger me drunk he wanted all the cats to go Turns out he knew stuff all about hammers, and nails so i made him sit up on the sink while i worked.... Bloody nuisance, Dont think he will ever amount to anything ;D 'Eres a shot with the insulation in place. I still havent worked out wether to have the sink over near the fridge or hard right. Sorta got bored doin all that kitchen "Girly" stuff so i started on workin out how to make the tailgate/ boot lid thingy. I cut about 6 of these suckers out of 12mm ply..... look like donosi.....dinosararars..... dinosawarse..... look like ribs from them big things that usta roam around here a gazillion years ago Afta i carved 'em out . i screwed two of em tugeffer to make one piece 25mm thick. Then i screwed them to the outer shell. Its round about now my 'ead starts 'urtin... too much thinkun' goin' on. Once i 'ad the 2 chunks a wood stuck tugether i screwed the whole shootin' match to the outer shell of the van. done the same the other side too... what a clever sausage i am Bcominin. Ended up with Ummmmmmmm... Lemme see 12mm + 12mm + 12mm = ummm... just givus a minute while i get my soxs of 1.2.3.4.5.6 now the other foot.7.8.9.10... now the left hand.... ummm 36 mm of wood Gunna sand the crap outta the three bits until its as smooth as a babies bum on both sides. Then I'm gunna get the other 2 ribs of the brontosaurus and do the same with them for the middle support of the boot lid. hopefully it'lll all shut the way god intended van doors ta shut and i wont get soggy Saos in the bikkie tin when it rains......... Gunna take the hubs over to stewie campbell the hot rod builder dude and see if the hubs can be turned down on the lathe to allow the 34' Chev wire wheel rims ta fit on over the bearing housing outer. He's been away at "Greasefeast" in Bris Vegas. Headin down to Bargo tomorrow to pick up another treasure. Might call by the cobfossils place on the way home and parafde around on his front lawn with it. I need to check out the progress on the 1938 Vint Van.as well. That'll do for taday im sick of typing and your sick of reading. A..The a.. the a.... that's all folks Reddoddball

Hi Col and Kris Veebees Hows life without a chassis I have been wurkin' fa wot feels like days on the TD. Actually it has been weeks since the aliens give up trying to make it fly and went home. That'll teach 'em not to mess with a superior foe such as mmmmwaaa It has taken me longer to get the kitchen , top and bottom tailgate right than it did to demolish , sandblast and build the shell. I am convinced that kitchens in TD can be just as time consuming as constructing household kitchens. Lotsa fiddly bits n pieces. They reckon carpenters work to the nearest inch and cabinet makers work to the nearest thousandth of an inch. Anyone that has set about doin' house renovations will know what i am on about here. I am using as many bits as possible from the old van i demolished . So there is a lot of odds and ends that need to be cut, shut, sanded , denailed, and generally modified to make the kitchen look like its as old as Cobbe.....eeeer... i mean at least 50 year old Pheeewwww ... i nearly said the "fossil" word then didn't I I have a heap of old cupboard doors and i was sorta trying to work out how to build the kitchen to suit the doors i have on offer.... bad move. The best advise i can give to any prospective TD renovator, restorer, constructor, mangaler is to build a basic timber frame with a few shelves to hold plastic tubs etc . Make it with minimal petitions so that odd shaped objects will fit in easily and then hide whatever your storing with 3 or 4 good sized doors using original hinges and knobs etc . Anyone chasing original hinges will be pleased to know i am gunna have at least a dozen spares and i will bring them and what ever else i dont use in the way of old hingres knobs, catches, lights etc to Coledale....... I can be bribed with Alcohol, food and woman.... not necessarlily in that order mind you. ;D Anyway Trendsetters i promise i will take a few happy snaps of my failures down the shed of invention and stick 'em on the 'puter tommora. I have been told i've Gotta stay sober for a few hours around lunchtime . We are having a gathering of the Reddo Clan for my mums 88 birthday. Kids, grandkids, great grandkids.... A whole sh#tload of Reddos in one spot.... .... Hmmm that reminds me... i gotta put new laces in my boxing gloves Gotta go... the cattledog has just knocked the lids off two Tooheys Draught longnecks and the cat is rollin up a "number" Reddo - from the "Shed of Dementia, Paranoia, scitzophrenia and haluecinations" Waddya mean 2010 is next week.

Hey Reddo Love the fire exit from the main boudwah (red lite room) Is that for the quick getaway in the morning? Out of interest, what is that insulation you are using for the fridge? Was thinking of using polystyrene brocalli boxes for mine when I get around 2 it. Is what you've got better than that? Cheers Ray

Hi Youall Ray. The insulation is the stuff originally used back in the 50's and 60's. I saved all i could from my old alloy van i demolished. Its sorta fibreous like coconut husk but compresses like particle board. Just about every van on this website will have it in behind the fridge panels. Also salvaged some ( plus a stack of other bits and pieces) from a van i came across being demolished at Valla Park back in June this year. Styrene boxes would probably afford better insulation qualities than the old stuff i am using but i set out from the start to use as much "recycled "materials as possible on this project. Admittedly it wont be a restored teardrop when finished but it will definetly have more than 70% old van content. I've been plugging away at the kitchen area of the TD . Sorta making the layout up as i go along. I saved the old filler neck off the ali van. I had to mount it up fairly high on the right side as i am fitting a square 25 litre plastic tank in the bottom right hand side cupboard. This spot will also house battery, gas bottle and Hinge out BBQ. The gap you can see between the lid and the sides is about 10mm . I cut the sides down to allow for 12mm X 25mm black foam rubber strips to stick between the boot and the side to weather /dust proof the kitchen area. As anyone who has worked on a TD will tell you one of the hardest jobs is the bootlid. It turned out OK eventually. i made a smaller lower tailgate which hinges down out of the way. Tailights and indicators are your normal Narva garden variety at the moment. They might get changed in the future if i come across something more "period" Just waiting on something to turn up at a swap or maybe from ebay. Centre tailight is from a Harley . picked it up at a swapmeet for $12. Bloke wanted $40 and was heading home when i approached him. No the van isnt registered "bundyboys". Hinges and lift handle are from an old gate under the house. I wanted something that looked ancient ... well at least 40iesish. 1400 mm long bootlid hinge is from an old wine bar that i found on a kerbside waste collection heap. Its made of copper. I peeled the flaking first layer of ply lamenate off the ice chest door. it was badly split on the lower edge , but patience , liquid nails and clamping has repaired it . still have to sand it and paint it. The badge in the middle is an old Kelvinator badge sourced from the local tip recycle shop ... 50 cents. The support strutts that hold the boot lid up are made of 20mm copper pipe. I have a tool clip on either side at bench hieght that the pipes swing into. This stops them moving if the wind gets under the lid. Also have two more clips mounted on the bottom side of the lid that the pipes hinge up into when the lid is closed. I made the benchtop out of 4.5mm ply then covered it in old aluminuim from the alloy van nailed down with the clean inside facing outwards. Even managed to cut it all out and avoid the old nail holes that held it on the old van. 12mm cover strips and "L" mould where also salvaged and reused wherever the bench meets the walls etc. I can see at least another week or so fitting out cupboard doors etc . then i can tackle the side doors... then the guards... then the 12 volt wiring... then the 240volt wiring... then the painting.... then the ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz Reddo

Well done Harold, Dad would be proud of ya. I actually thought ya might have been working on a different project...the one you picked up in Shepherd’s Bush, or has Albert told ya that you’ll never get a Sheila in that old piece of rubbish...stick to the tear drop son. Good advice, the TD is coming along nicely young fella...should be ready for Coledale eh?.......if ya don’t get distracted......again. Ya Cobber.

Hi Reddo, The T.D's looking good i must say, like the idea of recycling all the odds and ends of other vans, - makes them so unique- i'm starting to gather as much as possible myself for the same reason for whatever project i'll need them for, sorta like a caravan wrecking yard ;D I like the idea of a T.D. but we're going to enjoy the fruits of our labour, the "bondy " first (nearly finished) now the good weather is here before i decide on the next project. Catch Ya's at Coledale Cheers Kingy

Hello Reddo, WOW Thats gonna be some T.D. when you're finished mate. I also like the idea of using recycled bits and pieces from other old vintage vans that are beyond salvation. I'll have to park my T.D. out in the weather for a few months to get that "weathered look" ;D It looks too bloody new! Goodluck with finding the type/style of guards you're looking for. I know at the end of the day it can have alot to do with $$$ available. See you on Teardrop Boulevard at Coledale Cheers Greg

Hi Reddo. The kitchen is coming along nicely. The coconut fibre insulation stuff is probably called Canite. It is made from compressed sugar cane pulp, it was used every where in the 50s and 60s from insulation to ceiling and wall linings and even notice boards.
Cheers. Trodler.

Coming on well Reddo!! Why not add another skin to the bottom hinged flap covered with the same as your benchtop and then add holding chains so you can double the width of your bench space - you will appreciate every square mm you can get for holding up cans and flasks and bottles and ashtrays and glasses and JRs. you could sheath the wiring in a rubber cencertina hose or sumpthin to protect against spillage!

Hi All Let me start out by saying I will not have this "Thing" finished for the tour or Coledale. We must remember that even though this TD is being built on a 1950s chassis using parts from other old vans of the same era some people would argue that it does not qualify as a vintage van. If i had rebuilt the old van that was a victim of the "Bombing raid" to its original specs then it would be classed as a restoration of a vintage van... right??? In my opinion ....Because i have modified the chassis and built a different body style which will suit my needs when travelling long distances and over night short stays. This van does not fit the account Mark gives of a Vintage Van in the introduction to this site. To put it blunty it is not a vintage van because it was not built pre 1970. Having said all that i reckon I am gunna have a lot of fun with it just the same and isnt that what camping and vintage caravanning is all about???. Your average Joe at a car show or display day wouldn't pick the difference between it and a "real McCoy". He certainly would cry "Foul" if he seen one of those new "Reos" or "T@B" late model fibreglass reproductions thingys being touted as a "Vintage Van". Cobber...The "Bargo special" is resting in the front garden. I will apply my freshly honed woodbutchering skills on it once the TD is finished. My missus has "adopted" it and is going to load it with pot plants .it should look a lot flasher that the steptoes rag and bone cart this spring. Col & Kris... Painting will be the easy part. Bro has expressed interest in giving me a hand when the time comes to slop paint, pin stripes and murals on the "thing". So after practicing on "just croozn" and "Matilda" we should be able to come up with a decent paint job. It will be good to have a bit of "Adult supervision" when i take the lid of a paint tin. Perhaps this time i will get more paint on the van and less on myself , the walls, the floor of the shed. Greg .... Still trolling ebay and swaps for guards. have a few alternatives laying around home now. I scored a pair of ford prefect rear guards that would look great from side on but need a lot of work to extend them to suit the TD. Kaybee Col alerted me to a pair of Buick spare wheel covers on ebay. They ended up selling for $415. was watching 2 dodge gaurds... $20 with 1 hour to go... sold for $240. I rang the mob you got yours from . They only supply them to suit 13" wheels. There is a bloke at surfers P QLD somewhere that sells 4 guards to suit t bucket rods etc $250 . Will sell me 2 for $120 plus $20 postage. Made of F/glass . Nice sweeping lines like the old cars but are flat with no valence. i could make the same shape with plywood ar aluminium... no thanks. no rush will keep searching. Ray. .. I will be lining everything in the back with aluminium. except the underside of the boot lid and the cupboard doors. Its gunna be glarey enough with all that polished alloy in the sun. I will have to wear sunglasses when cooking or getting a beer out of the ice chest. i am toying with the idea of hinge down shelving on the underside of the bootlid that can be dropped down to a horizontal position when the bootlid is wide open and supported . Yep i will have chains on the lower tailgate and it will be lined with alloy and have stubby holders recessed into it for when friends drop in for after dinner ( or before for that matter) drinks, but it will be hinged completely down out of the way most of the time because i would bark my shins on it while cooking etc. also makes it further to reach stuff on the benchtop. Should have most of the kitchen cabinetry finished by next weekend. Hopefully come up with some better tailights. Meanwhile i'm off to pester the 'Lecko i use to work for and see if he has any of those old tumbler switches and round bakerlite power points i pulled out of the old houses when i used to do house rewires for him years ago. Harold Steptoe - Rag and Bone Merchant...... "You dirty old man" Geez Cobber you have bought back some memories there old mate ;D ... a funny show.

Update,Update, Update.... Sunday 10/9/2006 Its "Beer Oclock" which roughly translates to 3.00pm E.S.T ( Dunno wot EST translates to???) Been Floggin down here in Newy for the past few days and thats a real bonus... Why you might ask.... Well dddduuuuuuurrr That means i dont have to do any domestic duties around "Chez Reddos" . Also means time can be spent in................. THE SHED OF INVENTION!!!!! So off i went armed with jig saw , hammer and a few other things that hang on the wall that i havent quite worked out what they do yet, Managed to get the ice chest door primed and coated the other day so i bunged it back on first up. I use the two support hinges i ratted of the old van hinged down door where the stove goes. I used them as tailgate supports and they hinge up nicely out of the way when the bottom tailgate shuts. Also wired and mounted the tailights before sheeting the rest of the tailgate with masonite..... Masonite !!! now theres a product we dont see used on vans nowadays. Next up i fitted the two doors on the cupboard Odd shape for a bloody door Reddo... where ya drunk when ya cut 'em out.... Naa friends, i was completely stone cold sober when i thought this lot out. hmmmm maybe i coulda done better if i had finished off a few "sherbets" before i gave the doors a thought. Had to make one door really wide to ..... Fit the swing out shelf and towel rail. the shelf is mounted so that when the door is shut it is right up in the roof of the cupboard space, That way i can still jam the left side top section of the cupboard full of foodstuff..... like rum .... and scotch.....and port Where was i......oh yeah.. the shelf is wide enough to.... Set the BBQ up on. I had to make up a support leg to go under the BBQ. The doors are only 9mm ply and even with the door latched wide open with a cabin bolt, things where a little bit wonky right out the end. The leg hinges down across the top edge of the bottom tailgate. I managed to finish off the plumbing during the week as well as mount the battery in place and make up a frame to hold the gas bottle from sliding around while travelling. While i was admiring my handy work . SWMBO wandered in and asked where the knives ,forks and spoons , plus the cooking utezzi... uteuns.....utonse... the cooking irons would be stored . Now those of you that have been observant enough to notice the masonite on the inner side of the bottom gate would have noticed it is made up of three sections and would have realised that..... The cooking gear including 5 plates and 5 egg rings are concealed in the removable middle panel of the tailgate. ;D . There is enough room still there for another half a dozen knives forks and spoons etc. I will have to store the bowls and mugs somewhere else. Might have to store the gear in the tailgate in plastic bags when travelling although i think it would be fairly dust and waterproof in there anyway Is it any wander i get headaches. I usta blame the beer.... but i can honestly say its the thunkin' thats causing it. I have spent more time in this 1400mm X 1000mm area of the project than what i did blasting, painting the chassis and then cutting out and building the rest of the van. Even after all this effort it all looks like frogs vomit. I spose a good coat of paint will pretty things up and hide a few misguided nail holes and cutting mistakes. Somedays you feel as though you have achieved nothing . Other days ya can feel good about reaching another milestone. Just a pity its all gotta be pulled apart again to prime and paint it all. Thats it for now... hey i did say it was "Beer O'Clock" Ya gotta celebrate progress dont ya know. Reddo.... from "THE SHED OF INVENTION"

G'day Reddo, What an inovative and inventive individual you are It's looking great mate. I can relate to the kitchen/galley being the most difficult part of the build-up to sort out... You have the doors and window frames to go as well yet and I can assure you they're just as fun to construct ;D Good to hear your other half has a keen interest in where the cooking utensils are stored! Hi all Managed to spend a bit of time with the other 'love of my life" last night in "The shed of invention". Fitted the fibreglass guards and tried radiusing the outer edge to suit the 14' wheels. I am close but not exactly happy with them yet. might have to lower them a bit. While i was out garage saleing the other day i picked up three old drum kit cymbals for $2... bloody steptoe again. How does 14" brass "smoothies" look Seems a shame to cover perfectly good mag wheels. Might have to find a pair of rough ones. I stuck a bit of bluetak on them for the purpose of taking the photo. might have to come up with something a bit more secure for 100 kph highway work eh??? Bit scary ridin' a motorbike and seeing a brass frizzbie coming at ya. Reddoddjobfromthebondmovies

The insulation material used around iceboxes is CSR Cainite manufactured from sugar cane.It is 1/2 inch thick two finishes are avaliable plain and ivory (white) this is often used for pinboards

G'day Reddo, here was me building my own teardrop and totally unaware there was a madman like me out there doing the same. Mate I'm in Stocko - just overseas. I wasn't born here mate so no scar where the second head was removed. Heres a photo of mine, but it's not as neat as some aspects of yours. you've worked it out well. Mind you matye you're a lot more fanatical about old vans than me - I just wanted to build my own.

G'Day Royce Good to hear of another local logging on to this site. I have inlaws over in "Stockton - alias Atlantis the sunken city"- We are heading over there for Xmas dinner... Douglas st. Might try and escape for an hour and check out your TD .. put a face to a name and all that sorta stuff.
I seen your earlier posts and i reckon you've done a good job . i've gotta say after looking at a few TD's there is no hard and fast rules for layouts or sizes. Anything goes when ya start from scratch. I came home from coledale and attacked mine again. Changed doors around and removed the sink.
I tend to walk past it some days without planning on doing anything and then for some reason i end up with a chainsaw in my hand redesigning something on it. like the title says "2010" aint no rush.
cheers mate Reddo

No problem - I'll be here Xmas. Place is Breakwater Bed and Breakfast, 133 Mitchell Street - in the phone book. Let me know when. I'm not as keen as you. I don't rework it if I can avoid it. I sure as heel wish I'd discovered this site two years ago. Lot of times I could have done with advice. Made a few buggerups too. All part of the journey eh?

The doors are on right side Left side Ahh you have notice 2 different windows. aint much gunna be normal on this thing by the time i am finished. The weatrher stips over the doors are old edge moulding radiused the opposite way out and bent around my fat guts to form a v shaped 620mm radius. worked out good. I have put 2 stips of 40mm X 12mm meranti down the doors to keep em from bowing. Gunna use some elastic edged vinyl to make door pockets for magazines etc like the old morris minors door pockets . I had to make two door check straps out of leather ( same as the old landrovers) to stop the doors getting chewed by the edge mould when they swing past 90 degree open. if ya look at the photo of the right side you will see a retainer latch that holds the door open at right angles. should be handy when loadin stuff in and out. No key entry drivers side but will fit dead lock on passangers side next time i get the urge to do something. See yas. reddo
