I am sorry to say that it looks as though this version of proboards has the same problem we had with the previous version.
If anybody removes their post it affects the position of all posts that follow it so...... the accuracy of the index can not be guaranteed.

To use the index:
Locate the brand of coupling you wish to view and click on one of the links, that will take you to the post about that brand coupling but also allows you to scan the page so you can read adjacent posts that may (or may not) have further discussion and information about the coupling.

Just let me know if you find any errors... via a PM please, so nobody else knows I've been asleep on the job.

Trailezy couplings are a bit of a mystery, I think they might be a WA invention.

One was mentioned on the thread about 'Dusty's' van.... in WA

Another WA member who has her own web site actually mentions a 'Trailezy' caravan.

And there is a mob in WA who build 'Trailezy boats' .... They don't seem to have a web site but it might be worth giving them a phone call to see if they also make boat trailers or know anything about Trailezy couplings.

Having said all that I thought I'd do a search on the patent number you gave even though I thought the ? mark at the end of the number indicated you couldn't be sure what the last number was.

And blow me down HERE'S THE PATENT APPLICATION       

Although the application makes no mention of 'Trailezy'... so maybe the boat company bought the rights to the patent and sold them with their name on 'em ?

G'day again vandalay,

Sorry not much closer to being able to tell you how old your coupling is except to say.... they were called 'TRAILEASY' couplings first and later 'trailezy' couplings. Don't know yet when the changeover took place but it is thought the couplings were made up into the 1980s.

Very interesting to also find out they did indeed make 'Traileasy' caravans ..... thanks for giving us the lead

                  That's some impressive detective work on the 'Trailezy' coupling mate!
Interesting to hear of the link with Geraldton and W.A. origins in general.Also very 
cool to see it added to your old tow coupling index. Unfortunately it doesn't get me
much closer to putting an age or make on my van.Had a chance to look at 'vandalays
van'?Any ideas?

I've looked at the van and would have said pre 1950s, but the aluminium windows but paid to that suggestion, do they look like they have been added at some time ?
If not I'd guess it's an early 1950s make.

Have you had a look at the press clipping in the Traileasy thread in DHL, does the construction method in any way resemble yours ?

The 'Fred Holman Caravans' sticker I think just indicates he sold it at some time or other. Do a google on Fred Holman Caravans and you'll find he was still sponsoring races in 2010... and a Chris Holman was a competitor so...he might know something ?

                 thanks again for all your info searching and learned guesstimations
on the mystery van..Yeah I too did a bit of a search on the 'Holmans' but no luck
yet.I did have a read of the 'Traileasy' ad from 1948 but nothing really rings a bell
to this amateurs eyes besides the timber floor crossbeams could be tasmanian oak??
Whilst poking around Trove I did stumble upon a cool old ad for 'TRAILEZY caravan
sales and service'!!! on Canning Hwy Canning Bridge dated 4 october 1953.My archaic 
computer wrangling skills prevent me from posting it but I'll get the wife onto it...

You wouldn't think there could be many vintage tow couplings left that haven't been identified yet aye ?

There was mention of a 'Hold Fast' coupling back in 2006  but for some reason or other it didn't make it onto the thread, maybe because we couldn't see the name on the photo 

Anyway, look forward to seeing your photos.

hi all, how do you get around registration of your vans with the old couplings, a few experts (self proclaimed) in my life are saying i need to replace the old couplings to meet regs?

somewhere on this site(tech questions perhaps?) is posted the regs re your question, but if the tow coupling on the van is the original factory fitted coupling that came with the van then it is legal!
Essentially,the aus standard laws requiring that couplings must show/"quote" the aus standard number on them only apply to vans built/couplings fitted after a certain date (1989 or something)
Many rego inspectors don't know this and will try and make you put a new one on because the original one doesn't have the AS no on it.
I'm sure Cobber or DonR will know where it is

Onya Jenno . we've been down this track a couple of times aye ?

Manxie, as Jenno said the regulations relating to when our vintage caravans were made can be seen if you click here Down at page 14.

One potential problem is, even though those regs. say couplings must be branded with makers name and weight capacity, we know many of them weren't. That omission can be easily rectified

Obviously the coupling must be in good condition and working as intended when it was made.
Remember, you can only dig your heals in if you are determined to restore your van to its original state, if you've modified it in other respects you'll discover the authorities aren't interested in helping you keep the old coupling.
