Hello All, Another Jennison! Goodness gracious - how many does that make in the last wee while? I count the large one in VIC at the caravan yard from 1958-1962, the 1930s pop top, and now this President model from 1964. Well I guess it's like they say, "It never rains, but it pours". I wonder if *somebody* is doing a happy dance with the discovery of another bit of family history? Cheers Seeshell

What is most exciting for me is the chance in the future of a few jennisons together at the nats one year or at any other event for that matter ;D ;D ;D ;D Its a "Pym" model and at 1964 I think it would be just before they started badge engineering franklins.(I am sure Al will know one way or the other) There was a 30? foot president for sale some yrs back near Kazanadams....bloody huge!

Geez it seems like one only has to meet up with the Most Venerable Master of Reddotel for some of the old magic to rub off. Looks like the Reddotel indicator switch has got frozen on Jennison vans though.
First we met up with the Master for the blessed Toads n Roaches tour then quickly unearthed the Jennison pop-top in the Tenterfield Highlands. Now the gold dust has rubbed off on Stephen n Julie & they're about to uncover a Jennison President!
Be careful folks if you've had only brief encounters with the Master of Reddotel himself, cos you might be about to discover a Jennison speedboat lurking in a backyard pool soon!

Jenno, I see the Pym model must relate to Dick Pym who sold vans, as per ad, did he also design vans as well? S&J

Hi there, Dick bought the business after my grandad died. He continued with JAJs' pathfinder "shape" till the early 60s' ( the 17' with shower I bought, we pretty accurately placed as a 1960/62 model and may well have been one of the last of those. ) By the late 60s' he was badge engineering them. In the intervening period (63 to 67?) it seems to me a fairly safe bet that he may have had a crack at designing and marketing his own design till he realised he could not compete with the modern mass produced vans that were starting to be rolled out in large numbers by the late 60s' forcing him to turn to the badge engineering to stay viable. As I hinted in the previous post Franklin 1 may be able to help there. If he does not recognise the president as an engineered franklin then logically it must surely be a "pym" designed Jennison which would make it a very rare beast in its own right given "they" would have been made only for a very short time ....say 63 to 67 at a guess.(maybe less??!!) Unfortunately Dick Pyms sons were not very helpfull or interested when I tracked them down some years back and Dick himself had died only 2 months before I made contact jenno

G'day Jeff,
I've been trying to reply with some archive information, but Photobucket is not working for me tonight for some reason.
From my collected history, the Pathfinder President model was first advertised in October 1963, and continued to be advertised until around April 1967.
In November 1967, Pathfinder started to advertise themselves as "Pathfinder and Franklin" (same old address), and a few months later in March 1968, Pathfinder is listed in a Franklin corporate advertisement as an "authorised distributor" of Franklin caravans.
So, what to make of all of that? My guess is they stopped making their own caravans around the second half of 1967, and progressively made the change to become a Franklin distributor. From what I can see, no vans were ever "rebadged", so the President is made by Pathfinder.
When the President model was first advertised in '63, the advertisement copy read, "Australia's Quality Aluminium Caravan, with the latest U-shaped lounge, and many other improvements exclusive to Jennison models. See special display models 15ft and 19ft at reduced prices."
It will be interesting to see the inside of this President van to see if it has the U-shaped lounge.
In August 1966, the President model got new features: "...a rear-loading "boot", COOLITE insulation, aluminium frame, and the world's largest roof hatch."
I have a newspaper photo that was published at the end of '66 showing what looks like a 15-footer. It doesn't have the same side stripes as the one above, so it looks like S&J's van might be from an earlier time.
I'll post the photo when P/b starts to cooperate again.
cheers, Al.

Well there you go S & J. Al can back with some facts my suppositions, so 63 to 67 models must indeed be "Pym" designs!!! Can't wait to see the inside either. I will check my emails for the photos I had of the big president regards
and thanks Al

Checking our DHL section for the Pathfinder vans just now, and I realise I've already posted the newspaper photos I had in my collection (although I missed the 1965 photo which I've now added in the modified post). There's some photos in that DHL thread of an estimated 1963 Pathfinder, but the side stripes match the photo of the 1965 van I've just added in. The appearance of the President model in this November '63 sketch is the closest I've seen to the one S&J has discovered... cheers, Al.

Franklin 1
This advertisement from the 1962-3 NRMA Camping and Caravan Guide is all but identical to your illustration.
And what about the reference to conversions on Commer and VW vans, there must be some of those about for someone to find.

Looking at the 1962/3 add above..... that is a different to my/now trodlers, PF with shower so that would push it (trodlers) back to maybe 1960/61 model. The stripe is the same as in the adds. Interesting how little bits help piece the picture together. S and J, I could not tell from your photos but I presume it has a jennison roof hatch around 3m for a van that size? jenno
