more pics showing repaired sections. I have been insulating the van with 25mm polystyrene whenever I have access to a cavity. Its lightweight and effective. From now on it should be the construction phase rather than the demolition phase. earlee.

This is a pic of a stamp on the ply - it's in a few places so i have left some unpainted. Does anyone know the origin? It says : "BEST 3/16. BULL DOG BRAND" . with a picture of a bulldog head in the middle. earlee. ;

Hi earlee,
Good to see the result of a lot of hard work starting to go together. You've been at it for a while, & its going to be a brilliant job on a unique van, like most of the older home built ply vans were.
But yours must have been built by some pretty good tradesmen when it was put together.
With your springs, I'd think you could possibly lose about 1/4 of them. But I suggest you compare them with Davids big ply 16' van, if havent already.
They would have to be roughly the same weight, & could be a good guide. Otherwise you'll have to tow it, & get a feel for wether they are too stiff or not, but I think they will be too stiff.
Love your shed, & I'd kill for a level concrete floor & hoist. I suppose the consolation I have is working from home, but still your setup looks great.

Hi Earlee,
Nice going on the van. You've put a tremendous amount of work into the van, and have obviously got a bit to go, but at least you've passed the 'destructive' part of the project and are now onto the 'constructive' phase of the operation. Must be pretty satisfying. Really looking forward to see the end result... (No doubt you are too! ;D ;D)
Won't be long before you have to change the description under your avatar!! Even now you can't describe the van as the 'the crappiest 1931 van in Queensland' - so what do you have in mind?

Earlee, I'm really proud of you old son, that is a big job that I think you were not real keen to start on going back a year or two... so full credit to you for taking it on and doing a great job of restoration. That ply stamp you ask about is the same as I have on a piece of ply in Ol' 36 that is used to bridge between the seats on either side of the 'van to make them into a double bed. So I have done a bit of research on it. It was an Australian company that made plywood between 1930 and 1945... so that means your 'van was probably made before 1945 ;D ;D ;D You can see the full story at www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A090176b.htmThe mill is now owned by Boral and operated as "Boral Hancock Plywood" I have only found one very indistinct stamp on the ply Ol' 36 was made of and have not been able to find anything about it . Hi Earlee, I know what you mean by turning the corner from demolition to construction - It's a good feeling - hard to explain unless you've been through it. ;D I know it's a lot of work but it will be so satisfying to be able to stand back and look at every part and know what it took to get it back into pristine condition. ;D Gota love a big workshop with a hoist Keep up the great work it's inspiring ;D Cheers, tonyh

Great progress Earlee, a job i'm sure you'll be glad you went ahead with - that hoist like you say would be a godsend for all the below waist jobs, i think we'd be all a little envious of it Looking forward to the next installment of what is truely a unique van Cheers Kingy

thanks for all the replies - here's an update.. reclad the rotten side bits.. as cobber says ... not building a new van so only repairing and replacing as required .... just there is a lot required! and reclad the front... put the lantern windows back where they belong... starting to look like a real van again.. . I'm quite happy with it. earlee. ;D

here's a pic of the door back in place. I am going to leave it original with old canvas, locks, hinges, handles and grotty paint but will have to repair the broken leadlight window. earlee

Earlee, You make us mere mortals moan mate, you have a big job there. I look forward to climbing all under over and in this one at Coledale so, as “the man” said, extract the digit . Did you see my response to your plywood stamp question back @ reply #82 ? I have now found out a bit more about Ol' 36 ply.... proving she was made in Oz. Cobber.

cobber yes, saw the reply about the ply stamp - quite interesting. i reckon my van was made in australia as well, but along english lines- there are a few other little tell tale bits indicating its australian origin. I have been thinking about a name for it - it looks like a whale so might call it "MOBY" . ;D ;D someone who looks like Dosse suggested "SPERM", dunno about that one. earlee.

slowly but surely getting things done on the lantern van. I figure that if i finish this one too quickly then i will have to look for another project - so I am stretching this one out. ;D ;D Have decided to keep the original "horse and cart" suspension (see cobber i do listen). New spring bushes were required. I also need a another brake drum, backing plate and brake setup. Does any one have something similar hanging around, or know where i can obtain one. This is the rusted set: This what it should look like: I asked a couple of fellow enthusiasts for advice - they had other things on their minds. regards to all earlee.

Some of the leadlight windows were broken so my mate, Ken the clever builder, made some new ones using the the old ones for templates. They were originally all clear glass but i added some coloured panels to match the hinged lantern roof windows. This panel is for the entry door: This is one of the windows: Here is one of the original lantern roof windows: earlee

Ah mate, that's looking great... well, the windows are, the brake back plate doesn't look to crash hot. Do you have any idea what vehicle it came off ? Humpty or Col will know I bet. The fair dinkum lantern roof makes me just a little bit jealous too . Head down... keep at it . Cobber.

Hey Earlee That lantern roof lead lighting is the bees knees Must look magic at night from outside
Your mate does very nice leadlight work
The tin termites have had a feast on the backing plate.
I gather that you are going to keep the original brake drums rather than replace with a new set?
Or is that a new drum in the photo cause it looks pretty darn good to me.
Cheers Atog

Hi Earlee,
Seeing your not being swamped with ideas on your brakes, I'll give you my thoughts. I've played with a few early cars before, & know a little bit.
I believe the wheels are 1940 to 48 Ford USA sedan They were the only early Ford ones that had that 16" rims & small hubcaps with solid face wheels. Ford had wire wheels from the T model up to 1935, then the wide pattern wheels 36 to 39, & on the English Pilot. They aren't Chev as Chev were 6 stud from 1937 to 48
The brakes you have are fully mechanical, & with the smaller bolt pattern. Ford went to Hydraulic brakes in 1939.
So I believe the brake drum is Ford 1940 to 48 & backing plate would be Ford 36 to 39. It looks Ford to me, & Old Henry changed as little as necessary as years changed.
I'd be surprised if the earlier/later brake drums/backing plates didnt interchange Most of the other USA cars went to hydraulic brakes in the very early 1930's
Hope this helps.

hi JBJ. ;D thanks for the good deductive thinking about the brakes: " So I believe the brake drum is Ford 1940 to 48 & backing plate would be Ford 36 to 39"Now i know what to try and find - I would like to retain the old system rather than fit a new axle and hubs etc. Neil - thanks for the sleeping bag offer but i graciously decline. ;D Cobber - I intend to have the van ready for Coledale 2009 2010 2011. earlee

Can't I see a serial number stamped on one of the brake shoes which may help to identify them. My brake book starts at 1959, so that won't be much help. I know it's not 37 or 38, as they had a wedge adjuster up the top.
