I went to look at the small white fella today, but spotted the oldie under a tarp and couldn't resist either. pics to follow. Does anyone recognise either type of van? The small one is a 10 footer and the large one with the leadlight windows and timber chassis is a 16 footer. Neither van have badges.

Hi Earlee, The oldie looks like one that mark had posted, I cant find it, It was in the intro. It appears to be similiar in the roofline, Mark will remember it. It had a girl standing out the front of it in a swimming costume I think the van was green and the comments were that it was home built what a craftsman something to that effect. Wil

That big van looks similar to the brownie van on Ebay at the moment. The little white fellow has the shape of a 12 foot Franklin (I think it was the Hunter). Did you buy the little fellow Earlee?? Ray

Yeh both vans are mine.
The small white one is 10'6" and in quite good nick - just needs a paint job, wheel spats and a bit of a tidy-up. It will be great to tow behind the EK. The large 16'6" is a really old van, I haven't seen one as old - timber chassis, leadlight windows, 16" wheels, fancy roof and with no kitchen. Probably from the 30's or 40's - does anyone have any info?? Don't know what to do with it though!

Marc, You are most likely thinking of the English “Eccles” caravan. They had a roof line similar to this one of Earlee’s. I have a set of place mats produced by Andrew Jenkinson www.jenkinsons-caravan-world.com and on the back of the one featuring a 1930’s Eccles he says they sold their caravans worldwide. He reckons Gracie Fields owned an Eccles caravan--good to know eh? As for the “little one”. Have a look at the one I had for sale. You can see it under the heading “caravan for sale in Sydney”. It has been sold but I never did find out who made it. Does yours look the same on the inside Earlee? Cobber.

Well done earlee . As they say, all good thing comes to those who wait. It's been a worthwhile wait for you, and then to have twins. Good luck Ray

Guys, I think you'll find the raised roof design is such that the little overhead windows provide overhead ventilation .....the idea may have originated in the UK, but Australian designs in the 1930's adopted the same idea. They probably later discovered it was easier to cut a hole in the roof and install a hatch, much easier to build than the raised roof.

Cobber, the little van you had for sale is around the same era but mine has a different internal layout with fold down table at the front. All of my windows and screens are timber framed - were yours?. It has early holden wheels with FC hubcaps which, assuming they are the originals, date it around 1958.
There was a decal on the outside above the front window, but time has won, and it has fallen off.

G’Day Earlee, Really hard to date these little blighters because most of them seem to have come in kit form and people were free to arrange the inside layout to suit themselves, and wheels, not to mention hub caps were easy to swap around. The one I sold could be older than yours because it had an ice box, no fridge, but then again the hub caps I think were HT Holden, 1969. Windows look the same. I had to remake the pieces shown below, they were all rotted, but the timber window frames themselves were OK. As for the raised roof design on your other one I expect Mark is right. I really can't imagine to many people importing a van from the UK in those days. The raised roof design I suppose also gave extra head room (so long as you just walked up and down the centre). Cobber.

Re Holden wheels, 2 of the 13" look alike but.... one of them is rivetted and the other welded ! I could not fit the rivetted ones on my 65 Sunliner, as it fouled the brake drum, which looks like a Girling after market set up

I got the small 10 footer registered today and couldn't believe how easy it was to do.
As long as the van is under 750kgs and complies with the lighting requirements, then it is just a matter of filling in the paperwork and paying $78. If one is unsure about the weight then one can either get a weighbridge certificate or one is allowed to just guess. Funnily enough mine is about 650kgs, with no gas appliances fitted, so an inspection was not necessary.
Now a bit of painting and tidying up and it will be ready for its maiden voyage.

Well done earlee, another p/bucket conqueror ;D ;D What a neat looking outfit you have there. It would be great to see that lantern roof restored again, because there don't seem to be too many of them left. Cheers Ray

The things some people will do to get a porthole. Just do what Matt and I do.Get a van with them already in it. Well if it will help you sleep at night, go for it. I do hope you didn't get the Wolseley just for the headlight rim.. because that would be a bit desperate.. ;D ;D ;D

Earlee, Ya know, everybody reads everything anybody posts on this site but not everybody can respond to everything anybody posts. That doesn’t mean that anybody’s post is not appreciated. But I couldn’t resist remarking that I think that hat of yours is a classic, I am going to make one just like it. The van looks good too. I had to replace those same window frames on that van I sold, bad design eh?
AND A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TOO Regards, Cobber.

Earlee The small van looks very much like a Supa Lite, made in Hurstville, in a small factory next to Ferguson VW, who were Toyota dealers the last time I went though there. Greg

Hi Earlee So what is the game plan for this beauty If you dont restore it i can name at least a dozen regulars on this site that would find room for this old darlin in their shed . I love it. Just so different to your average rolling house of splinter. Now go get that new nailgun and jigsaw and ..... attack. Reddo
