Hi will - yes the spats are definately going back on "the bondy" and i look forward to the lemonades with you, probably coledale 2008. I have made a hole in the side and will fit a hatch so that I can store the annexe poles under the rear seat. The main objective is to remove the large plastic waterpipe on the drawbar. might even fit this. Hi Cobber - so sorry to have starved you of the lantern van progress. I intend to keep it original with minimal alteration/restoration so that it will retain its unique character. Just as you suggested. regards earlee.

Hey Earlee, Looks like you're doing some good work on both vans. I'm impressed that you decided to re-do your little bondy while still working on the lantern roof. I think we should have a special V V award for people who are energetic enough (silly enough ) to take on two major projects at once. Will in WA is another contender for the award, and of course Mark T could also qualify for an award because he has numerous projects on the go at the same time... Thanks for posting the progress report. Don Ricardo

Hi Earlee,
How did you go with that hitch? You should definately try heat and quench before you chop anything.
I (and other club members) frequently have to bring rusted components to a little bit below cherry red and then quench with cold water to free up heavily rusted one's on our T Model fords and the youngest of these have been neglected for 80 years. So there's a good chance you can free it all up with this proces and some good penetrating fluid like wd40 or better "rats piss" as my mechanic calls the stuff he gets from some German named company that eludes me at the moment..
Cheers Chris

Gee earlee, thanks for that update The axle I'd give it a good sandblast then paint it . Looking at your tow coupling again, I was reading in a pommy book where the industry didn't finally decide until after the second world war that the best place for the “ball” was on the car, prior to that the socket was sometimes on the car and the “ball” was on the 'van, maybe that is what you have........ all you have to do is find the type of socket they fitted to the car . Keep it 'riginal Cobber.

hey cactus, i spent a fair bit of time scraping off the old paint, filling, sanding, filling sanding, undercoating sanding etc and then sprayed the van with more turps based undercoats and "house paint enamel" - yes it has been colour matched to the V8 EK. Another lesson i learned was to NOT spray at night especially after a few beers.. ;D ;D

Hey Earlee, gotta love the J series Beddies, you may find it is early sixties though, they started making them in the very late 50's, and the early bodies have an indent in the dash to the right of the dash pos as a defect in the pressing, this was corrected in early 1960, that is usually the easiest way to check the year of the truck, if you shoot me some details I will find out for you the correct year from a mate of mine that worked for Bedford in the UK, he identified my J3 as a 60 model for me Matt

Hi Earlee, Vans looking great, sure looks to have a great finish on it, all the hard yakka has paid off - best you send a pic of it behind that EK Don't know if you were serious or not about the little beddy or not, but did you see this very popular version at wintersun last year - sure created a lot of interest, now there's some incentive Cheers Kingy

Hi Ya Dossie Dont feel bad about letting the 1955 newspaper stunt out of the bag. Earlee has pleaded guilty to this stunt more than once in his life. In my opinion the lantern van paperwork and Earlees birth certificate are of "Questionable Origins" both need some close scrutinee for authenticity I think he might be of alien ancestory and the lantern van could actually be younger than my grandaughter.;D ;D ;D Reddo

Last week I felt like doing a bit of work on the drawbar and suspension of the lantern van, so I did. Had to cut the U bolts ( equivalent ) as they were stuffed. The van has been sitting is mud up past the axle at some stage, so one side suspension and brakes are beyond repair - even the backing plate has rusted away. The other side is still good and after a bit of persuasion, is quite useable. I intend to keep it as original as possible so will cleanup and re-use what I can - brakes, axle and springs. I believe the drum and backing plates are from a 1930's Ford. Does anyone have one complete side available? I also need a couple of hubcaps and a spare wheel. 16 inch with 5 studs and 5+1/2 inch PCD. the coupling is the same as this one (malabuh's), however i do still need the "car side" of the connection, as per the following pic. My intention is to make it towable and weatherproof, meaning fully windowed and cladded, and drag it down to Coledale 2008. Will probably have to "camp" in it as the inside won't be finished. earlee. ;D

Hi Earlee,
Keep at it mate, its all easy when you get it finished. You're doing well. I havent got any Ford brake bits unfortunately, but if you contacted some of the Qld hot rod builders you might find what you need easily enough. Give me a ring if you want some contacts.

hi Cobber and JBJ - thanks for the replies. It appears too difficult for me to find old style replacement parts / bearings etc for the original axle and brake setup, so have decided to update to a new electric brake setup with a new axle. Fortunately I will be able to retain the old rims and stud pattern to give original look. ;D ;D regards earlee.

the springs cleaned up well - maybe 12 leaves may be too many for modern roads? Also started on some of the inside and removed the pantry and very large icebox. It was originally built as a modular unit before fitting to the van - which made removal easy. Doing this gave access to the sliding flyscreen cavity behind. was then able to clean up and paint the area. the sliding flyscreen was quite sad and needed repair - lucky for me a good builder mate was helping and he is very clever at "dowelling" Here is a pic of remnants of the original canvas that covered the entire outside of the van. Next job was a "small repair" on the lower frame. It quickly became a "large repair" Both sides need repair and the job got even larger. Love having a hoist - no more crawling around on the ground and can always work at chest height. earlee.
