great little van! I'm thinking it might be too small for a family of four, but I have seen these with a modified to accommodate 4. a 'fold up' bunk on hinges is added above the dinette or the divan and lowered or raised during the day. in the meantime, do you know when the van was last towed? I know you said last rego was 85, but has it moved since then?
also, I'd like to send you a pm so we can chinwag further, but not sure if it'll go through (I'm a technodunce!), so if you don't receive one in the next 30 minutes, would you mind sending me a PM which I can then reply to?
cheers izzy

PM ?? Is that a private message?... I m not sure I know how to do that...will check it out.... otherwise Im happy to give you my email.... With out adding the bunks you spoke of,..It is a bit small for four, three would be fine, ( but I have never opened the annex either and that may make all the difference) I last towed the van a month or so ago locally (my son wanted to use it for a sleep over at a friends!!) I towed it from near Maitland to here about 8 months ago that was about 8hrs towing- no problem at all.

Hi Wanda, yes, it's a private message. it may never get through, so might be talk via email? not sure if you're happy to post your email address here, but it would be helpful to be able to chat at liberty. Forum policy dictates we don't discuss money and all that bumph out loud, ya see

You just have to refine your searching techniques on ebay....just 'caravan' you're absolutely right! Sometimes some sellers may not give much detail in the title.... www.ebay.com.au/itm/CARAVAN-CANVAS-ANNEXE-/170849700769?pt=AU_Caravans_RVs&hash=item27c76f8ba1So if you are searching on title alone you could miss some interesting vv listings. You may need to enhance your ebay caravan search options by ticking the Include Description box when searching using key words...vintage, old, classic, restored, etc

Hi Isambard, Went and checked out a van today. Red and white 1956 Liteace as advertised in the vintage caravan magazine located at Gympie. Good old van. Needs a bit of work Did my homework. It is this van. vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general08&thread=2321&page=1 It's a bit shabby now Looked much better in the pics from the link supplied. More like a 3 person sleeper. Not my cuppa tea. Would need to spend bucks to fix it up. But it is do-able. I, like you, are after something more suitable to a family.Just wanted to keep you in the loop. Am going to check out another van from the mag on Saturday. Big bastard of a van. Completely striped out apparently. It's an Olympic. I'll keep you posted. And if anything comes up in south east QLD I'm happy to check it out for you. And if it's good I'll buy it for myself. Ha ha. Just being honest. But when I do get one I'll still look out for you as I only want one van. I'm not a hoarder. Simply don't have the room for more than one. Hope you find that elusive perfect van. Feel free to contact me any time. John

hey John nice looking van. a shame it's not ready to roll! mind you, we're steering well clear of bondwood. and not just because it'll live outdoors at our place; we have a thing about windows. ie, we like big ones - and lots of 'em! the bondwoods seem to mostly have ... ahem .... a deficit in that regard thing is we'll be doing a fair bit of vanning in the alps, and while more glass means it's harder to heat, it does offset potential claustrophobia brought on by huddling indoors for longish periods of time - huddling indoors being an occupational hazard of apres snowsports! meantime, I'll keep eyes peeled down this way too. incidentally, I'm checking out TWO vans this very weekend. completely astonishing, really, when sometimes we go months between seeing anything remotely feasible. both are family-ready with full annex, both registered, both diamond pattern ally clad, one 1959, the other 1965. both in very good order as far as I can tell. neither have been advertised anywhere - but owners are happy to sell. there's a good chance we'll like one or the other (sadly, wanda's gorgeous little escort van is too small for us. I loved it, but hubby pointed out the unlikelihood of squeezing four of us into it. men and their common sense ... harrumph!), so there's a bluddy good chance the other one might be ideal for you guys. will probably drop in here on sat arvo after our first inspection, then again sunday after the next one. by monday we both might, in theory, have a van - imagine that

Wanda, do not despair! There may be others on this forum that could be interested in your van if it doesn't suit isambard. It's a nice looking little van. Probably wont be long before you find a new owner

I've looked at vans that promised the world and delivered a pile of crap. Looked high and low. Even contemplated moving to bloody Victoria cause that's where all the good vans seem to be. John, keep your chin up. You'll find the right one! I snapped this pic today. It was described as Tows great...

[ an amazing looking interior, eh? not entirely my cup of tea as is - a little toooo much of the red and black kitchy rock'n'roll thang happening, but with the addition of some gentler 50's colours and some vintage barkcloth curtains, would entirely be my cuppa To change the colours is not rocket science, a clever chick like you can knock up some curtains quick smart and maybe be some other colours of your choice in place of the grey cupboards Laminex is not something that you would really choose to change, so go to it mate ;D ;D Rod absolutely! sewing a few curtains aint a drama and yeah, nah. wouldnt change that funkeriffic formica and upholstery for anything! would change the colour of cupboards, though. not sure I'm diggin the slate grey !

Hi isambard, Yeh I did see classic on ebay. Probably a tad small. I'm after minimum 16'. Preferably 18'. Did you end up seeing the 1965 aluminium?

hi John. wow, an 18 footer, eh? you must have a big carport thinking laterally, which is against the grain, I'm wondering if the 16" we almost bought is still available. it's very flash and in good order with 12 months rego. roomy van - could suit you. trubs is it's in SA :/ meantime, we did manage to get out and inspect the 65 this weekend, despite half the family having lousy colds. and I'm very pleased to be able to say, out loud, we bought it it's a 14' Millard, diamond pattern flat ally clad twin singles four berth. was never on market, and was a sort of stealth action over many weeks of discussions with the owner - who's incidentally kept it undercover, registered, and perfectly maintained for the past 30 years. gorgeous little thing it is. will attempt a pic asap. incidentally, we never managed to get to the 1959 van - which while it looks the goods is probably going to be too small for you. just a thought - isn't there an Olympic Riviera floating around here somewhere? that could suit you. think it's up your way too! cheers

Hi Junctionbox, I'm still here and still looking for an ally van. My kids have used up the internet downloads for the month (buggers). So it's back to download speed till the 15th. Did I mention I'm pissed off.... It's been painful waiting for things to load. I've come to the realisation that I'm better off doing a total re-build of a Viscount. Thanks to this and the classic caravan forum. At least I know it'd last another 20 odd years. Peace of mind and all that.
Thanks for helping me. Much appreciated. I just wish a van would miraculously pop up in a shed around the corner... Wish me luck. Checked out the vans you have found. They look awesome. As they all do in photos. I've inspected enough now to know that pics are not always the same as "in the flesh".
I'd be happy to buy one interstate if one of the members of this great forum were to check it out and give it the thumbs up. No worries there.

hi John. good on you for having the moxy to do a rebuild! you'll get exactly what you in the end regarding the untruth of pics - it does seem to be the way doesnt it. we got lucky with ours, in that the reality was actually better than the pics, which was a surprise. jaded? us? will keep an eye out down here. shame you're wanting a big ally van - am on trail of an interesting glass number at present. would be a restorer, I think. if I can get a pic I'll post it here. happy hunting meantime!
