Gather round boys n girls, because it's story time finally!
I have finally gotten around to uploading some photos of the rally so that I can share the journey with you all.
We departed Melbourne on the Wednesday before the rally, just incase, given that we were driving a slightly ropy Daimler Sovereign with no speedo or fuel gauge, a car that was listed at the top of the list of cars not to buy for the rally, with the words 'no. just no.'. We convoyed with Matt and Rob of Matman and Robin in their trusty Toyota Commuter Mattmobile. The 800 or so km was pleasantly uneventful, if a little slow uphill behind the Batmobile, which we were using as a speedo.
The following 2 days were spent relaxing in Adelaide with good friends who were also on their second year of the rally as Channel 4 News. It was with great excitement that we travelled to the startline Saturday morning to join the other 198 cars participating. There was no parking left by the time we got there so we thought we'd practice our offroading:
Some brilliant work had gone into decorating cars
And we were wrapped to find our old friend, the Vauxhall Victor which we took on last year's rally, and which won us 'Vehicle least likely to make it' return for another rally.
the 850km of day 1 was not without event, with our poor friends Smokey and the Bandit being rear ended in their Alfa GTV, which received a trailer light as a left taillight later that night in order to continue on.
First night's camping was fairly comfortable at the Cooper Pedy footy oval
Although after telling everyone how well the Daimler was going that night the starter relay decided to die the next morning, resulting in an in-enginebay starter wire being rigged up:
Dinner on day 2 was extra special, not only was it at Uluru, but it involved 3 engagements amongst rally participants, including ours
Day 3 and 4 were spent on dirt roads which were luckily fairly recently graded, but we still had to travel on top of all of the mounde between wheel ruts to save our sump guard from scraping (we would have been lucky to have had 100mm ground clearance fully loaded!) Within the first hour of dirt our front passenger seatbelt had failed (leading to the passenger being chauffeured for the remainder of the trip), the dizzy cap had failed and the rearview mirror had rattled off. night 3 saw me up til 11pm stripping the carbs with the help of Michael and Alex, resetting timing and points and mixture so that we were running on 6 cylinders again for the start of day 4. Every morning after that we had to reset the points as they would close up over the day's driving.
I had to take this photo as it was one of the funniest car modifications I saw all trip
Day 5 started with a photo shoot down an airstrip in the road, followed by hours of dirt road driving through a dust storm which felt like the end of the world. Photos cannot convey the eerieness A quick fuel leak repair took place to the fuel filter in the evening of day 5 before 30-40mm of rain hit us and the road we were to leave on.
Thankfully the rain did not deter us and we plowed on through the mud in undoubtedly the most fun day of driving I have experienced
Day 7 was back to tarmac, but was not without it's challenges, several cars were hurting from their day in the mud. Amongst our little group we had 2 with headgasket concerns, one with major engine woes, and we had developed a small radiator leak and a large power steering fluid thirst.
Thankfully every one of our wonderful buddy group 11 made it through and on the Saturday we went to Auction. The Daimler only made it to $250, but a few others in the group did better.
It was sad to see the Daimler go but it had done us proud. including the drive from Melbourne we covered a little over 4500km including 4 days of dirt, puddles, dust storms, driving over a sand bank to avoid a road train, all sorts of places a Daimler should never go, and with little more than servicing issues along the way. For those wondering the Vauxhall also made it through again, with no more than gearbox oil topups, still wearing the roofracks and tyres we fitted for last years rally. It is returning to Sydney with it's proud owner.
We are wrapped to have been a part of this wonderful fundraiser and adventure again and take our hats off to the organisers for pulling it off and for managing to raise over $1.2 million in support of the Cancer Council in this year's rally.

Hi Don,
Perth to Darwin sounds amazing but we have other goals for next year. prepping the Daimler took 6+months of work every weekend to get it ready for the rally, so a year or 2 off will definitely be needed before we compete again, although I can't help but keep an eye out for the right car...

We've been touring around the lower central NSW region over the last couple of weeks, in our other caravan ( ) .
We stopped for lunch in a little country town called Coolamon, and had a delicious meal of Driftwood soup with Newcastle damper roll, followed by Ol'36 pudding.
Scrum-diddly-umptious!
I can highly recommend this little cafe if you happen to be visiting Coolamon...

Thanks Lisa. It will be good to see you down there.
RE CONVOY:- I think it may be easier this year for everyone to just arrive at their own convenience rather than meet at the train station.
BUT as you drive in the park and and turn left through the gate beep your horn a few times so that I notice you coming in and will guide you to the parking for VV members. Remember as you come in to mention to the parking attendants you are with the VV group .
Remember you can book on the day if you decide at the last minute.
At this stage weather prediction is good for Saturday.

@ Andrew. as mentioned in the other thread, our dear M'lady had a gorgeous interior. little extra touches which went with its 'deluxe' moniker. wraparound perspex corner windows to front, diamond shaped ventilation holes backed by pegboard around bulkhead cabinets, further pegboard to wardrobe housing, that sort of thing. we were the third owners - the elderly chap we bought it from had it for 30 years. he'd maintained it beautifully, always keeping it registered and roadworthy. he'd buffed all the handles and replaced all the hinges with new matching ones, replaced wraparounds when the originals clouded, kept her paint fresh with sky blue cabinetry, built new and very good insect screens, etc etc. further, it had never been left outdoors in its 50+ years, so structurally almost as good as new. no water inside, ever. quite amazing really. still miss that lovely van a little bit :/

a plug for Absolute Towing in Canberra. used recently by two forum members (and two different drivers, as it was a backload) and found to be exceptionally careful and professional. totally understood the vintage van thing, unlike some - who just see them as scrap and ship accordingly. very reasonable rates, too. not sure how far their service extends, but have a chat with Travis. they may well backload further afield.

The last couple of pics we had. Mostly the hitch area. The graffiti was terrible. Tony was very careful not to scratch - just used a cloth and soft brush with orange-power cleaner. Shame the original red stripe was covered in the graffiti and the door was almost black.

thanks Cardy. I do appreciate that a pair of shoes are useful if things go pear shaped. that's probably the only cause for pause at this stage. ultimately though, spending a considerable amount on a van that cost an inconsiderable amount, just to 'save' the van in a bingle doesn't add up for us. in real estate terms, overcapitalising

another bit thanks, Suzie ... for those interesting details about the Globe's more recent history
funny about the graffiti. I recall you mentioning pressure washes and the like, but didn't really absorb it at the time, what with all the excitement. I can now see that there's been considerable exterior cleaning quite recently. please pass on my thanks to Tony for his toils!
re: jockey wheel, etc - yep, it's a cracker! we've pulled the little van hither and thither while doing van shuffles (one long driveway, one very narrow gate and two vans) and so have had opportunity to test out the workings. it's even better than our Franklin's, and that set up was pretty good, mechanically speaking. will try to grab some close ups for the hitch fanciers later today.
on the guys who shipped her up. I must say, they were almost embarrassingly careful and respectful of the old girl! the guy who did the run up here appreciates that she was a precious item - not 'a crappy old van'. and the fact that nothing was in disarray inside tells me she was very well secured and travelled gently. I've used these guns for hire before, and this was a whole new experience in professionalism. not sure if I mentioned to you how much they charged - but let's just say it was VERY good in comparison to other quotes. does indeed, make the idea of van hunting in Canberry very attractive! either that or we need talk them into extending their service to all eastern states
the York caravan needs a show and tell. I know you'd be underage for this forum, but maybe just one little piccy?

No offense taken with the cleaning comment Issy - Tony posted the photo's for you all and he was commenting on 'cleaning' of graffiti off the outside of the van - no pictures, you will never see how bad it was! We went inside, removed a rotting futon (new, as in probably 5 years old - not a vintage futon) Found a white tail spider in it, came screaming out. Kids wouldn't set foot inside it! So it was not cleaned inside! And SAVED from ever being meddled with by us.
The story I can tell you so far - I found the van in our local Canberra neighbourhood O'Connor. I loved the shape and knew it was special the moment I set eyes on it. I left a note under the owners door saying I would love to buy it from them if they wanted to sell it. The owner loved the van but his wife didn't so they were happy to sell it. He had owned it for 10 years and had bought it from the Mitchell Caravan people (second hand Caravan dealers). He bought it from a man that was towing the van into the caravan yard before it got purchased by Mitchell. That's everything I know.
My husband, Tony, and his friend felt the jockey wheel was the best they had ever seen - so smooth and such an amazing design. The coupling was smaller than a standard 50mm. We have a couple of extra photo's from that area that we can post later, might show more detail.
Tony agrees the company that came to collect and transport the van were really outstanding. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any more special little Canberra caravans for you all now that we know they can escape so easily I'm enjoying my dabble in Caravan buying and re-homing. I have a very cute little 1972 11 foot York Caravan that I found which is a much easier project than the Gold Coaster for us.
Apart from all that we are super excited that the Globe has gone to a wonderful new home with people that are so excited about restoring her. We really appreciate that. Go Issy. So exciting to have a small part in it all.

Just to look at the other side of the coin, we're putting brakes on Gertie for her own safety.
For the time being she'll be escorted (dragged, if you will) by our VY Commodore Wagon, and before we stripped her out she only weighed 600ish kilos. They're not going to be anything fancy, just cable over-ride drums/discs, but they'll help to stop Gertie from trying to overtake the car, if we ever need to stop that suddenly.

also thanks to Cobber and DonR for their input. Interesting to hear we have an interesting hitch/brake assembly. with a hole will be satisfying to pin down the age and story on this van.

Yes - the darker the better for teen retreats.

Hey Melburgorbust,
Congratulations on a great effort - both with the car and the fundraising. Sounds like you had a blast supporting a great cause.
It was a real thrill to watch the video of the last day and see the Daimler lining up with all the other vehicles in Freo - especially after it (along with all the other cars) had obviously had had a hammering on the road!
We'll look forward to seeing the pics when you get a chance.

Hi Isambard,
Great van - lots of work, but lots of potential.
As you've pointed on the DHL Globe Trotter thread, I think this might be the first Gold Coaster model we've seen which is fully clad in aluminium, so that makes it very interesting. There's a pic on the DHL thread of an earlier model with the same side cladding, but Globe appear to have stuck to plywood side cladding longer than most manufacturers.
I rather like the photo with all the cherry blossom. Very Japanese! Must have cost you an arm and a leg to transport the van over there just for the photoshoot, but blow the expense - a great result! (Yes, I did read your post about how the pic ended up that way.)

Hi Photographer,
No need to apologise for coming on to the forum. You are welcome to be here. The forum is often contacted by people that need a vintage caravan for a photoshoot or some other special event, and forum members help where they can.
And besides we are always pleased when someone shows an interest in our vans, whether they have one themselves or not.
Hopefully someone in WA will see your post and be able to help you out. Feel free to come on to the forum and give this thread a 'bump' every now and then if you haven't had a response. Not every forum member looks at the forum everyday, so it may take a little while.

I will definately look into that and maybe wait for a sale to come up as I really only need the front area and two back ones....as my van is a bunk model. The van is definately worth the spoil...so will be saving hard now. They have just opened a huge Lincraft store in Tweed Heads which is about a 40minute drive from here so will go and investigate. Hi Lek96 From what I can make out we normally "migrate " to Coledale the weekend after the long weekend in October. Which should make it Friday 18th , Sat 19th and Sunday 20th. We (NSW) usually have a spring tour starting the weekend before and travelling around the countryside .. ending up at Coledale around thursday or Friday. However due to having an Autumn Tour this year I wont be organizing a spring tour this year ( doesn't mean there wont be a spring tour.. someone else might want to organize it??) . Geoff and Jude are usually the key players in organizing Coledale in conjunction with the Coledale Beach Camping Reserve Caretakewr Norm and allocating favourite spots for the regulars.
I am sure they will follow up on this message in the near future and clarify whats planned for this year. Unfortunately we haven't had a great run of success with the weather the past few years .. but I will commit now and say I will be there.. only 3 1/2 Hrs from Newcastle

Hi Greedy
Yes there are a few I've dealt with too recently shipping windows from the Olympic around, but the cushions are bulky and the shipping costs are relatively high for such a light item.
I'm hoping some of our VV friends will be able to help out a northern member and carry the VIC package up to QLD and perhaps help her spare her wallet.

Ray,
Exciting development regarding the hole in your coupling
Like I said...... "Who goes poking around in greasy old tow couplings"
So I did, and guess what ? ..................................... both the Wesco coupling on Driftwood and the John Walsh/Locktite/Newcastle coupling on the Newcastle van have a hole in a similar spot inside the coupling
So..... could everybody please go out and inspect your couplings to see if you have a hole in a similar spot...... then we'll work out why it's there .........aye?

On behalf of Isambard:
A couple taken on the day we bought her, so they’re before ‘before’, if you will. Apologies for the pink and green in the second shot – was fiddling with corrections and couldn’t remove the darned thing once done. Speaking of that shot, you can see the lifted edge mould on the off side. Thankfully Globe’s edge seal underneath is so impressively impermeable that you could probably leave the strip off forever and not spring a leak! You might also see that some banana decided to support the rear towel by bolting a steel pad to the middle of the beautiful globe part of the logo . Not sure yet how to tackle that little faux pas.
She’s now in a jury rigged carport we hastily slapped up last week, and very difficult to photograph whole.

Won't show anything to Vic Roads, though, since we live in NSW We'll be skipping the brakes, I think.
And no chance of us swapping to an old car, though. Been there, done that - too much work and money and not enough practicality or cargo space for all the 'stuff' we need to do. Besides, no garage!

Hi
Firstly, I feel like a dirty infiltrator as I do not own a caravan, let alone a vintage one, but I do live in a caravan with a keel and am currently sailing around Australia.
I work for a world renown family photographer and we are looking for a retro style caravan for a family photo shoot in Perth in early June.
We are particularly interested in a rounded bondwood type caravan.
If you are in the area in early June and are interested in taking part, we would love to hear from you. We have a small budget for a 2 hour shoot.

If you get a ticket from a registered weigh bridge which you can show to Vic roads as proof of weight I wouldn't bother fitting brakes while you use a modern car to tow with, should you ever get a Classic or vintage car then I would reconsider your options.
them's the brakes « Result #60 on May 20, 2013, 12:39pm »
yet not .... since new Globule has none. it's had brakes at some point in history, but these are beyond salvation.
having read through the collected wisdom of brake gurus herein, and swotted up on RTA dogma, I gather that 750kg is still the max for unbraked vans (and ours is well under ... unframed, no fridge, no stove, no leadweight wadding filled mattresses, etc).
my question is, are they so very important with a light van and a very bluddy heavy tug? we drive a Falcon (shhhh!) wagon, rated up to 2300kg, and it literally doesn't know the Globe is on the back - you can't feel a thing. it hardly feels our 900kg Roadmaster, so thinking overkill to go to the trouble and considerable expense of braking the widget.

just wanted add that Lincraft do the fringed, scalloped holland blinds with pull ring
about a year ago I had a quote of $600 to make and fit a full caravans worth. I didnt do it (too costly for me), but if your budget allows, you'll have a very nice set of blinds that look right, and professionally installed. my local store do alot of vans, so yours might, too. you wouldnt want someone who'd only done houses !
edited to say that when I got that quote, there was a 30% off sale in the curtain dept. you could probably more safely estimate around $1000, adding inflation. a bit much, especially if the van cost less than that

more fun today. hubby managed to excise all the rotted ply, and the lower (rotted) members of both front side window frames. given it didnt end up amounting to much - less than a square metre of ply in total - I decided to sand and undercoat ceiling and bulkhead cabinet carcasses. took me a good 9 hours!! but what a difference a coat of off white paint made to that 'orrible blue cave
during the week I'll move to the outside and start stripping old flash and other 'art' from cladding. cant do any more inside til we've rebuilt the excised bits. also need to start tracking down window rubbers, and plan a reframe of the hatch - which is a bit tired. coming along nicely - and she's only been here since thursday

The forum moderator on the classic caravan forum has identified it as the second half of 1969 (because of the colour, the zig zag paint pattern and the chassis number c1234. I can't see the link to post a photo....?
Hi, I started out on the classic caravan forum, as I bought a viscount valiant caravan which was sold as being 1978 but has since been dated by the knowlegeable forum moderator as being the last half of 1969! so I think ive snuck in...chassis number is C1234. Lots of work to do, but the van is in basically good shape. Am very excited. Its called the Caboodle. Windows popped on the truck down from nsw. Would like to add a photo, but I can't see that I can on this post?

G'day DonR,
Well done to you for getting the chassis number.
If you look at the 1965 Ambassador painted design in this DHL thread , you'll see it matches the van you've discovered.
I presume you have the Moderator powers to modify anyone's post on the forum, so it would be great if you could insert your photo and the chassis number details into the 1965 section of that thread. It would save me having to copy your photo and doing it myself.

What a great little thing, and I'm pretty sure it's one I looked at with a couple of mates about 30 years ago at Captain's Flat near Canberra. We had urges then but resisted them, be that good or bad now. The story at the time was that it was an ex New Zealand 13 seat school bus, it still has a New Zealand plate on it. Somebody please save it

Normanville is my favourite destination. I'd like info as my van will be ready by then. I don't have a Chrysler though....are Holdens welcome? Could be an excuse to buy a Valiant .....
