Hi All
The Highway Palace is a most amazing looking rig. How lovely that it was at the SA event.
If you have more shots of the interior I would love to see them.
Cheers! Seeshell

Took a drive up ourselves yesterday. Took a lot of back roads, beautiful country, and a few good vineyards as well. Was great to see the cars and vans, got some really good ideas and meet some great people. Would have loved to stay for longer and meet more people but knee started aching (2 weeks post op). Looked at what colour schemes, spats and lights others have used - more confused than ever ;D Fresh enthusiasm to finish our two vans, get the Hudson on the road and maybe make an offer for a really different 50's tow car. Spent the late afternoon working on the morry, no rust left now and shes running really well, but still not happy with the brakes and waiting for the new poly suspension bushes. The 1200 dato motor and gearbox really transform the old girl. Wonder what she would tow. Think i need a 4.2 diff. Designed some new spats and colour scheme for the bondwood van last night, so now to repaint again All in all a perfect way to spend a hot saturday.

A great weekend in Tanunda, I think about 42 vans. Had a range of special guests for the weekend, one of which was Lisa (VV mag editor). As you are aware, she seems to like the colour pink. As such, John & Gwenda Coombe went all out to make this weekend memorable for Lisa, including picking her up from Adelaide airport in their black Mustang, and of course dressed in pink. Would have been great to see it unfold down there, but here they are arriving at the park. The Coombe's also brought a second van for Lisa to use for the weekend... ...with all the trimmings Below is a photo of Fri afternoon happy hour Bob Freak and John Coombe put a lot of effort into the weekend and it was a great event Steve

Thanks to all the VV'ers for making the Tanunda caravan park turn into such a nostalgic place for us to visit. Went up on Saturday and had a great time looking around and talking to so many friendly people. I missed the launch of the caravanning history in SA, but hopefully someone will let me know where to get one. Hopefully I will post some pics in the next day or so. Cheers Graem

Hi Aussieambo...and others interested in Trevor Gill's history of the SA caravan industry, The CCSIA (Caravan and Camping Industry Assoication of South Australia - hope I got the words in the right order ) have posted information on the forum about how to purchase Trevor Gill's book here. They have advised people to pre-order copies because there are limited numbers. Maybe they will have them at the Caravan and Camping Show, but I think it may be prudent to order a copy online if you can. Don Ricardo

Firstly , Thanks to Donricrdo for posting my Globe Trotter logos. I hope that other owners will be able to use them for detail puposes .
Now to Tanunda......... What a weekend we had! Usually we in the Chrysler Restorers Club use our vans to attend one of our club events or to visit some S.A. event such as the up coming salt water classic wooden boat weekend on the York Penninsula. Having Bob Freak as a member proved to be a HUGE bonus this weekend as he has spent a lot of time (and $) organising this weekend's BIG event in Tanunda and we had 17 members vintage (and Classic) vans amoung the 45 to 50 attending vans. It was good to see a good roll up from the Roadmaster 'Register' as well as the only 2 Adventurers seen on this site. (are there any more out there?) A couple of Rowvans and Broadways too. And a special thanks to all those who made the effort to travel from interstate. A highlight of saturday was the introduction of some original manufactureres as well as some family of others. We had Bill(?) Rowe who built the 2 Rowvans present. Jan Copolla and his brother Sal who worked for Roadmaster in the early days and later took over the factory (NOT THE NAME), and went on to build ADELMA, which as a vanner in the 70's I heard many refer to both these vans as the "Rolls Royce of caravans" Ray Mossop spoke about his father and uncle's BROADWAY manufacturing business and had taken one of theirs as well as his own his own design teardrop. Larry Weepers from Roadmaster spoke of growing up in his Dad's ROADMASTER factory and as the owner now he built the last Roady last year to concentrate on repair and sale of accessories etc so he and Judy can get out and enjoy doing what their customers had been enjoying for many years. The local Ford club supplied a fantastic roast dinner for a reasonable price and the Barrossa rock and roll club set up and danced into the night to the music and singing of 'No one famous' (or was that 'nobody famous'?) Certainly we hadn't heard of him, but will look forward to enjoying his talents again. Every evening had what is euphemistically known as HAPPY HOUR. I cant understand why as 60 minutes used to make an hour but it seems to have gone metric or something or is my clock doing 300 minutes to the hour now? I just love these hours. Any way a great weekend and the new annexe was measured and ordered on the way home. Thanks to Bob Freak and his offsider John Coombe and those who helped. See you on the GRAND PARADE IN 2013 Beetles

G'day Beetlesbailey, Thanks for the pics of the SA get together. Can you tell us any more about the Hitchison van? It has a number of similarities to the vans variously labelled as Mayfares (or Mayfairs??) and Smal-A-Vans. The latter two vans (which are possibly the same thing with different names) were also SA built. I'm wondering if there is a link between the Hitchison and the Mayfare/Smal-A-Vans. Don Ricardo

Hi Dave,
Thanks for that info about the Hitchison (don't you love the name 'Hitchison'?). It actually makes it all the more intriguing.
Before we got the info on the Smal-A-Van, we were told that there were three Mayfares built in 1948. We know - or thought we knew - where all three of them are: - one is the green one, Mark T has one and Cruz has one. Then we came across the info for the Smal-A-Van published in 1953. So are all of the Mayfares, Mayfares or are some of them Smal-A-Vans?
Now we see the Hitchison and discover that three of them were built....
Makes you wonder if somebody in SA conceived the concept and built just a small number of each model before changing the design a bit (although the Smal-A-Vans appear to be identical to the Mayfares).
Having seen the Hitchison, do you agree that the similarity with the Mayfare/Smal-A-Van seems to great to be a coincidence?
Another V V mystery to be solved...
Don Ricardo
