Hello bigvmum and welcome to the forum, your van looks to be in great nic for it's age, shouldn't take to much elbow grease to clean up, I myself have not been here long either compared to some of the others and I would just like to say that you will be warmly welcomed where ever you go with this lot as I found, they are a great bunch of folk and very knowledgeable when it comes to these old van thingys.

I know franklin1 is hot on Franklins and there is one here who is the same with Viscounts but I can't think of who it was now but I'm sure that he will reply just as soon as he reads your thread.

G'day bigvmum, and welcome to the forum! ;D The information we have on Viscount caravans (including the Ambassador model) is pretty sketchy at the moment. The "lightning flash" style of stripe on the sides was used in 1970 and 1971, and may have been in 1969 as well. I've never seen a two-tone colour scheme like yours before, so I suspect somebody has repainted the stripes at some stage. The standard colours available were single-tone and were the basic red, blue, yellow, orange, green, or brown. If you were to strip the paint off your stripes (heaven forbid! ), you'd probably see the original colour underneath. As far as your Ambassador sticker above the windows goes, I know Viscount changed the sticker design on their vans from your version to a different version, but I don't know for sure whether it happened mid-1970 or mid-1971. It was one or the other. Your chassis number is useful for my records, even though it doesn't help me to accurately say what year your van is from. We will need to collect a lot more information than we have at present, however based on the information I have at the moment, your van is somewhere between mid-1969 and mid-1971. Your inside photos show the features that were common with other Viscounts from that same time period. Sorry I can't be more specific. cheers, Al.

G'day again, bigvmum Here's a couple of scans of a Viscount brochure showing the side stripe pattern on your van... You can see the Viscount logo on the top right corner of the first photo. This was the new logo version after yours, but the side stripes were continued. Now all I need to determine is whether this brochure is from 1970 or 1971. We have another forum for caravans built in the 1970s that you are more than welcome to join. You won't necessarily get any more accurate information about your van (...because I'm the general historian on that forum ), but you will see more examples of your van on that forum than you'll see here. Click on this link to take you to the "Classis Caravans" forum: linkcheers, Al.

G'day greedy53, If only the Viscount numbering system was as easy as you say... Viscount started to use a new system in 1973 where the full chassis number started with a letter, followed by the year number, followed by the consecutive chassis number being built so far that year. So, a 1973 Viscount Royal got R3xxxx A 1973 Viscount Ambassador got A3xxxx and a 1973 Viscount Supreme got S3xxxx This system continued up until 1979, when a new system came in. So, from 1973 to 1978, Viscounts will have an A, R, or S followed by the year number: 3=1973; 4=1974; 5=1975; etc A nice, logical numbering system, as far as I'm concerned. It's the numbering system for Viscounts/Ambassadors/Valiants from 1954 to 1972 that's got me flummoxed at the moment. Nothing shows as being logical, and that's mainly because there aren't enough chassis numbers collected yet to work out a pattern. But, one day somebody will crack the code. cheers, Al.
