We are looking to restore an old Roadmaster Caravan if we can find one. If one appears anywhere, please contact us. Thanks!

We live in southern Adelaide and I suspect whether we wanted to travel far would depend on the age and condition of the van. My son is actually looking to do the restore as a tribute to his grandfather, Dean Mordaunt, who was the original builder of Roadmaster vans. Dean recently died unexpectantly

Hi Gepp, How wonderful to have you on the forum and to know of your connection to Dean Mordaunt. However, I am very sorry to hear of his death. I am sure I speak for everyone on the forum when I ask you to accept our condolences. I presume you are his daughter or his daughter-in-law if your son is Dean's grandson. Forum member Lazza, who now owns Roadmaster as I am sure you know, has told us a little about Dean and the early days of Roadmaster. There is a very nice picture of Dean on the Roadmaster thread in Down History Lane here, as you may have already discovered. It is great that your son is looking for a Roadmaster to restore as a tribute to his grandfather. I guess that means you may be looking for one of the vans built in Dean's time at Roadmaster? There are a couple of other people on the forum whose father or grandfather built caravans, and who have sought out one of the family vans which has a special meaning for them. Two I can think of straight off are Jennison, whose grandfather built Jennison vans, and Raym, whose father built Broadway vans. As it happens all three (including Dean) had South Australian roots. I'm not sure what that says about SA van builders, except that they planted a love of caravaning in the family members who followed, which is no bad thing. Good luck with you search for a van. Please do let us know when you find one, and tell us about the restoration when it occurs. Don Ricardo

Thanks for your kind words Don. I was only reflecting today that its really sad that its taken Dad's death to get us stirred up to maintain an interest in his caravans. I am his daughter and grew up playing in his sheds in the back yard and other sites, and watching the men work.
It's been interesting to read through some of the posts on this web site and to know that I recognise many of the brand names. I can even remember travelling over to Box Hill in Vic to deliver their 'Greythorne' vans.
Brian and I own a van that Dad bought as a shell in the 1970s and he outfitted himself. The shell is a Franklin, but the inside is very much Roadmaster. He had sold the business then so didn't have the facilities to make the van from scratch. I look at the photos on this web site and his style didn't alter much. My son is very keen to own a Roadmaster hence the posts on this web site. We know it could take some time but we're prepared to wait, and we would be only too keen to upload photos of any restoration done. Dad was a amateur movie maker as well and we have quite a few movies of the Roadmaster days.
Regards,
Heather
