Hello All
I just purchased my first caravan. I beauty I think. 1959 Vintage Northern Caravan 12ft x 7ft. Interior is amazing in particular.
So it is in Melbourne. Im in Sydney. Wanted some advice on freighting it, or else if I tow, what are the things i should think about..... Protecting windows. Travel speeds. tire pressures. Tis a new game and looking to learn.
If anyone in the caravan franternity is driving up in the next few weeks Id love to hear from you. My vehicle is no good for towing that distance so relying on friends at this stage. could fly to Melbourne and drive up with her covering fuel costs etc.
Anyway, be in touch.
Josh

Thanks for the Welcome gents! Indeed tis exciting and i feel comfortable (sight useen) she is a beauty. Always been a retro man - cars and stuff - but never had the place for a caravan which now i do. THanks for the lead FF on the towing man - he's not doing caravans (or anything) at the moment as his engine blew up! Also was great to read through that extensive list of resources for caravan restoration! Take care all and look forward to chatting soon and generally finding more about this community. Josh

Hi Jbar4494, The Northern looks a great van, and very few have turned up on the forum - try one other, and that only by hearsay. So sounds like you've got yourself a very interesting addition to your other retro gear. Regarding transporting the van from Melbourne to Sydney, you could try - Openica Logistics www.opsl.com.auI don't know anything about the company myself, but Boblor gave me the details a while back and asked me to post the info on the Suppliers/Info thread in the Technical Section...which I think I neglected to do. Apologies Boblor! Don Ricardo

I really just want to drive down there and pick it up. We will see.... Hi jbar, congrats on the purchase. If you really want to go get it and tow it back I would suggest you have a good talk to the sellers, find out as much as you can about its condition for towing concentrating on security of windows, HATCH, doors etc, as well as going prepared to fix lights, bearings, hitch, wheels and tyres. Check ahead of time where and what is required for a permit. Having just done this myself, it is a great experience but plan ahead! Also allow plenty of time I ended up staying an extra night because I couldn't get tyres same day - would pay to ring ahead to some tyre places to order some once you talk to the seller about sizes... Cheers and good luck with it. Doug.

HI YA JOSH , HOW YA GOING ? WHAT ABOUT GETTING THE SELLERS TO DO THE TYRES,WHEEL BEARINGS, TAIL LIGHTS , ETC FOR YOU IN ADVANCE IF THEY NEED DOING AND FIX HIM UP WITH THE EXTRA CASH . IF IT IS ROADWORTHY SUGGEST YOU MEET HIM HALFWAY , ALBURY/WODONGA AND PAY HIS FUEL AND ACCOMADATION FOR A NIGHT . GOTTA STILL BE HEAPS CHEAPER THAN A TOW MOB WOULD CHARGE . CHRISTMAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER YOU COULD MAKE A TRIP OF IT AND "TOUR" HOME THE LONG WAY . GREAT EXCUSE FOR A BREAK AWAY FROM EVERYTHING AND CHRISTEN THE VAN . GOOD LUCK , 8-)MAURIE . p.s WHAT PART OF SYDNEY TOWN YOU FROM ?

CHeers Maurie. In fact that is what I am doing. We are meeting next week at Albury and I will take the darling from there. DOn't think i will convince him to do any work on it. I think i am going to have to assume that she is good for the journey. They guy i am buying it from has a business in hot rod cars and is flat out with pre christmas sillyness. Hell if anyone in Melbourne (vans in sydenham) wants to do a bit of a safety check on it I would so appreciate it?? I have a block of land on the end of Katoomba - blue mountains with a big shed for the caravan. Other than that i live in Newtown during the uni semester. Where are you Maurie. Looking forward to the next caravan meet! Josh

;D ;D ;D Thats good news Josh. Always a worry when we ask old vans to be towed 100s of Ks after possibly sitting for years without turning a wheel. The bearings may have grease but grease can solidify . wheel studs can snap off... Drawbars can corrode with rust from contanst dripping of moisture off the body,.. Tyres can explode .. Oh shut up Reddo you pesimist. The van is home safely and that is all that matters now. Regards Reddo
