As you can tell from my screen-name, I am not biased or anything, but I also endorse the Royal as an excellent tow car. Mine does not even know the van is on the back - although it is only a baby van and thus not much of a test. :-)

Hi Guys, You're making me feel sad my Dodge is still in the panel shop . A four month rust repair has blown out to 10 months, with no definite end in site. Cost is over 10 times what I expected, but the quality of the work is very good. Reason for this post, is the old Dodge is a great towcar. Sure mines got a HQ graft, power steering, 351 Clevo, Auto, 9", Dual Fuel, etc, but I think the wheelbase & weight of the 54 to 56 Dodge /Chrysler/De Soto, & their derivatives the Chrysler Royal, make for a real well balanced tow car. I'm prejudiced. Just sweating on getting mine back so I can put it back together & use it again. JBJ

There is also "Relmhayd" on this site, who tows with a beautiful Chrysler Royal.........and where is "Royal 313"?? My Chrysler Royal doesn't even know Janorma is on the back......and yes she is very heavy!!!!! BTW: I got 15mpg towing from Newcastle to Coledale and back....Not bad considering I got every B@#%*** red light in Sydney and not to mention the ....traffic!! Love my Royal.... Adam....Very nice looking car , if you ever want to take that sunviser off, call me. ...looking for some rear venetians too, and a set of bumper overriders front & rear...54 Plymouth upwards will do the job. .Has it got a 318 transplanted or is it still the 313??

G'day Adam, I reckon that dad's van would match your car too..... It was originally towed by a Chrysler royal, hence the colour!

Some great looking Royals here...
How many are on original brakes? I think they were possibly a bit marginal, but okay with care.

Hi Raybell, mine like humpty 2 have a factory fitted booster and have no problems at all, i fitted a new axle assembly on my van with electric brakes and works very well.

Yeah ours doesn't even have a booster but I'm looking into disc brakes. Rod Hadfield (Castlemain Rod Shop) does a conversion kit (just the adaptor & bearings/spacers) for $450. Buy some 69-73 Ford rotors & HQ cast iron callipers & your off. Interestly, I also found out that HK,HT,HG tie rods are the same! Cheers Adam

I know that one Royal (living at Grenfell) has some production DBA discs fitted, home made caliper mounts and Holden calipers - presumably from the HQ to HZ era...
I also know that some (Castlemaine has been mentioned...) fit Falcon hubs and discs with Holden calipers, but they space the inner bearing out about 5mm from the original position, I don't agree with that answer unless you make up exact-length spacers for the inner bearings. That's a tiresome engineering task, but a good answer.
Fitting discs to drum brake cars is not really all that hard, but there is generally a little bit of precision machining involved. If you choose a disc that you don't have to modify, just machine the hub to suit, then you never have to worry about machining again.
The brakes are probably the biggest shortfall in the Royal, in my opinion, especially for towing a van. To be sure, it's only the times when you need to use them hard and repeatedly that are the problem, but these times come up. Like the Moonbi Range, Victoria Pass and the like.
A power booster is of limited benefit, as the limitation in extreme circumstances is actually brake shoe temperatures, fluid boiling poin and drum expansion. The V8 3-speed Torqueflite box used in the AP3s is an excellent help in retarding the vehicles, I will add.
If anyone wants to know in more detail about the conversion I've mentioned, just e.mail me ( r@ybell.net ) and I'll put you in touch with the Grenfell car's owner, I'm sure he'll help.

That's why I chose the AP3.........the 3 speed auto.

It becomes even more obvious that you're not as silly as I look then...
And just think, you've got a Yankee car that the Yanks never saw. Very few today even know they existed!

Hi John and Lynne, i have had a couple of Royals, i am still finding my way with some of the parts. As far as i know mechanical parts front ends etc are interchangeable with the late 50's Plymouths', DeSotos' and Dodges'. This may help and gives you a wider range to find parts. Good luck Bob

Here is one link to the US, look for 56/57 Plymouth parts. Really cheap shocks too. Don't forget that you may find that Holden HK-T-G tierods are the same also........cheers Adam www.oldmoparts.com/Default.htm
