All I need to clarify what I need to do to my 1960 Hawthorn to pass rego. This is in regards to lighting, brakes and tow hitch.
I will be putting a new axle and electric brakes on her but do I have to put a 50 mm tow hitch on? and do I need to comply with clearance lamps, reflectors, 2 brake lights. you get the picture I want to keep her as original as possible.
Thanks Bruce & Kath

Gday Bruce, I have a feeling you have to put a modern tow hitch and 50mm ball on to get it registered unless you're doing historic club rego. The deal is that the tow hitch must show the tow/weight (tare? )capacity on it and the makers name. One way that a certain "senior " member of our forum got round it was by getting out the trusty punch set and punching in his own maker name and tare himself. A bit odd with a 30s' tow hitch showing its'"tare" in KG but that was the requirement by law for rego! Nevertheless, I live just outside ACT so NSW may be different and you may get away with it in Canberra. I know ACT does not do historic rego on caravans/trailers but you can join the NSW based sthn Tablelands historic auto restorers car club in QBN even with a ACT home address and register it on club rego. I have had no problems copper wise towing my VV anywhere on club plates and only $19.00 per annum jennison

That is interesting about club rego for Vintage vans in New South Wales. It sets a precedent for other states so something to follow up on. Rollydog

Hi I had the "Splinter Hilton "on NSW Historic Rego for 3 years. No worries. The biggest stumbling block you will find along this path is your own club constitution. Getting them ( the committee and possibly some members) to include Historic trailers and vans as historic vehicles in the clauses may take some doing if you have some die hard .. stick in the muds that cant see that trailers and vans are historic vehicles in thier own rights. David Wolfe from Bargo NSW has a WW1 Army field kitchen complete with Boiler etc on club plates and tows it behind a .. i think he has a 1920s Chev, The fact tyhat some insurance co's are now insuring the old vans is also a big plus... makes it easier to convince the clubbies that there is a lesser risk to the club while you are towing the van or trailer on a club outing..... Which leads us to the second issue.. using the van on histoic plates on a non gazetted club event. Again easy enough solved. Providing you mention your ïntention to move"at a club meeting.. or in my case ... discuss it with the club registrar, In most cases they are sweet with this... especially if the event you are attending is Historic/ vintage vehicle related... aka.. Vintage caravan gatherings .. Just nominate roughly the route you will be taking.. the days you will be on the road with the van . Slowly , slowly vintage vans are gaining acceptance amongst the clubs etc, . They definitley draw plenty of attention at car shows . Good luck Reddo

Thanks Guys, I can find all the details about new or imported vans but nothing about old vans and what needs to be done to bring up to standard. I have been part of the committee with the ACT council of motor clubs and the only time the issue of Vintage rego for a trailer came up was for a WWII Jeep trailer, and it was decided not to proceed with setting up historic ACT rego for it. I have a mate in tec standards at rego, so might give him a call. Full rego in the ACT is now about $240 per year.I am OK with full rego but Historic rego would save me some $$

Hi, Yes i have had to change both couplings as the original did not have weight or brand.Chassis numbers can also be a problem. Had to change both as the original numbers where being used by some box trailers.(Guess the owners just made them up). It did not matter that my numbers where original. Good Luck Cruz

FF that is where I started last night, but it seems to be for new or imported trailers. I was hoping not to have to put different clearance lamps on or have to put two tail lams on, just want to try and keep some old stuff.

Hi Our club had a van on club plates for a while and the club inspectors were happy to accept it in original condition, lights, hitch etc, as they do with cars, no probs but there are some pedantic gits out there who like to make life difficult The van has moved on from our club and I'm sure if full rego was required then the owner would have to meet present regs. I've not long had my van, fully reg'd when I bought it with original hitch and I thought about club plates but decided to keep full rego so I can use it when I like rather than just drag it around to club dos and the have the bother of getting permission for non club events. Decided too I'd rather keep it fully reg'd 8-)than have the hassle of going through a 'blue slip' to re register it some time:P I had problems with my last car I bought on club plates and decided to fully register. 'Pedantic git' >:(who inspected it had all sorts of complaints about stuff that didn't compy (because it was a '49 model car that didn't have to anyway) and in the end he just refused as the chassis number of the club papers was missing the 2 prefix letters He nearly had a fit It was a blessing, took it elsewhere and it didn't have a problem. Dealing with people with a bit of power and some knowledge, bugger !! You could always do a 'Cobber' and use a removeable light board in addition to your original lights, safer on the road and quickly removed to return to original ;D And you might forget to put it back on sometimes;) Good luck George

I confirmed last night the ACT do not have a historic rego scheme for vans and trailers. I will contact ACT road user services, to clarify rego requirements. George, I know what you mean with people with no idea telling us what they think are the rules, yet have no idea.

I'd just go with full A.C.T. rego, its only $240 (not a real lot i guess). You could just put 3 or 6 months on it, and then just another 3 months when you want to run the 'van again. there is a small surcharge for doing 3 or 6 months, but its not much. Thats the way i'm gonna do my Valiant van, when its ready for the road.

Fireball the ACT also has a seasonal rego for Vans, I think its for 9 Months per year. I am really trying to work out is if I have to put modern clearance lights and tail lamps on the old girl, because I think it will detract from the original look.

G'day Bruce, In my experience ( in NSW) If you are keeping the 'van original in all respects you don't have to put clearance lights on the 'van if it was built without them, although you might have trouble convincing the blue slip man if you van is 2.2 mtr wide or over. Like you... I like to keep things as original as practical but I had no compunction about fitting a trailer board to the rear of Ol' 36 with extra tail lights and blinkers.... easily removed when on display. Tow couplings.... if it has a makers name and weight capacity stamped on it, it is OK... size doesn't matter. If you can get hold of "Automotive Information Bulletin " version 24:05 you can read all about it. Cobber.

Interesting the rego difference per state. QLD full rego is around $100 I think or has it gone up a bit (my car trailer is getting ridiculous) The idea of club rego is good but does have some restrictions. If anyone in Queensland is thinking about it send me a pm as I am the QLD Transport Liaison for QHMC (QLD Historic Motoring Council) so am involved in the SIVS rego scheme and any variants etc. If enough push is received it could be a possible agenda item for the next meeting I have with QLD Transport. Mind you though we don't pay that much for caravan rego here so any saving would be off set by restrictions on use and club arrangements I think. Rollydog
