I am thinking of taking my aluminium Munro out to yarramalong near Aratula in August where it will be pretty damn cold with no power. Years ago I froze in my Jayco in winter but wonder if there are any suggestions to shield the cold a bit. My thought is to forget the annex and instead put my 20x12 tarp over the van suspending it 6 inches or so above the top of the van to stop the dew etc. I tried this with a tent for good results. Any other suggestions ? Rollydog

What you need Rollydog is one of those gas furnaces they have in the English caravans! Saw one the other day in an English caravan owned by one of our V V'ers. It looks really impressive, but for some reason the thought of a fully fledged gas fire in a small flammable caravan makes me a little nervous. Alternatively you could build a demountable wooden garage to take with you. Wood isn't as good a conductor of the cold as aluminium... ;D ;D ;D (I'll leave the sensible ideas to others! I bet some of those hardy (foolhardy???) Xmas in July @ Katoomba-ites will have some ideas for you after next weekend! ;D ;D ;D) Don Ricardo

Hmm I'll forgo the gas furnace. I have a really good OZTENT but think the van will be warmer. When I raced at Leyburn Historic Sprints each year it would get down to minus 6 degrees in the tent so also put a furniture blanket on the floor so will do the same in the van. Leaving the front and rear awnings shut at night is another ption but no matter what I will be armer than the others in their dome tents. Rollydog

A friend of ours who has a NEW van recently purchased a heater. Bought it at "rays outdoors" I think. It is small and has a safety feature that if it topples over it automatically switches off!! He DOES have a generator as it is electric! Didn't cost him much...about $60 I think...I did read somewhere on the site some time ago about insulation that they use around air conditioners?? Whoever it was highly recommended it as it was easy to manipulate into cupboard spaces & ceilings ...or alternatively you could wrap yourself in newspaper/cardboard like the street urchins do!!! Hee hee... J

On a powered site a small fan heater is sufficient but in this situation I think a swag and sleeping bag in the van should keep me warm. The others in their tents I am not so sure about ! Rollydog
