This astounds me. Today I rang A caravan park on the tweed coast about vacancies in December as I am thinking of taking Princess Helen down there for a drive. (she needs an outing) To my joy there is one site left right on the beach. WOOHOO The woman in charge of the park asked me how big my van was. I said 9 foot. She made some scoffing coughing noise in a doubtful way. ( a lot of girls do that when I tell them that its 9 foot, I really dont know why) Then she said. ITS NOT A CAMPERVAN IS IT? WE DONT ALLOW CAMPERVANS ON THE CARAVAN SITES! Well frig me. This I dont understand. No PH is not a campervan but a lot of campervans are powered with stoves and beds etc, they just have canvas sides. Does it really matter if you have a van , trailer, camper fifth wheeler or a bus? At the end of the day they are all roof's over heads with beds. Or are these people like my mother and have to hang the washing out in a particular order. Vans on the outside. campers in the middle and trailers right inside where noone can see them? Yours sincerely scootman president of the fat black gay lesbian harp seals of Australia.

.Hey scootman, interesting topic this. It seems that campsite politics are rather prominant in this day and age. I have a feeling that some of the people who run the sites forget we are all for a pleasent time and conform accordingly it just appears, like anywhere, they love rules. They get longer and longer, almost to p.o.w camp proportions its all very tedious. Regarding the campervan issue, apparently kombis, of which I'm a proud owner, are known as whizz bangers! due to the noise of the sliding door. I have to admit that people returning late only to wake the whole site up is a wee bit inconsiderate so I guess sticking us in the corner somewhere keeps the peace, so to speak. I personally get the family in through the passenger door if I'm not to plastered and don't forget!!. org..........good night.....Whiiizzzzzzzzsh....BANG...oops!

Oh god, yes. I forgot about the campervans and motorhomes. Jeeeesus IF your motorhome is worth over 120000 please park next to the 1200000 caravan. IF you drive a kombi or a ford transit, please stay down with the tents.

Hi guys Havent hesard of this bullshit down here in good ol New south of Wales. Must be just a "Cane toad mentality". Just because some goose spends $100, 000 plus on a 4X4 ( or some other flash late model tow car) It does not elevate them to "Jesus Christ status" . They are still only humans and our site money is a s good as thier money. I think you hit it right on the head O/H. Anyone that can afford that sort of money for a part time holiday car and van probably come from an area where even the postie wears a tuxedo . So it stands to reason that it would be totally unacceptable to go on Holidays and be located next to a thilthy old ply/ ally/ fiberglass van full of common street urchants. Who have canvas or worse still $2 shop sheets of brattice for annexes. "Oh look charles how quaint. They are hammering in the tent pegs themselves" ....mmmmmm yes i know dear, Not a word to Jeeves the butler . We wouldnt want him getting any silly ideas in his head and expect us to put the annexe up... Now do me a favour an pore me another martini" Yep... I honestly think there is an element out there dictating to the park managers about the "Pecking order" in their van park. A mate from the bike club got the chat about snoring in his 2 man tent. An elderly couple where slightly more than disgruntled with the noises coming from "Critters" tent. He went to bed the next night with a large sauce bottle strategically positioned sticking upwards out of his crutch. He placed a dolphin torch beside him and.. well you can imagine what the siloutte looked like from outside the tent at night ;D ;D ;D ;D The snoring paled into insignificance after the "Light show" ;D Reddo

Hey Scoot et al - this is amazing! I am absolutely floored at this sort of discrimination, and the sooner we stamp this out the better. I'm sure this site is big enough to give an opinion that's read more and more amongst the vanning fraternity, with a sufficient grapevine to have some effect on park policy. May I suggest that with the Grande Poohpah's permission we name and shame the parks that partake of this type of discrimination. Some sorts of regulation are quite necessary I'm sure, but judging a potential resident based on their rig is totally un-Australian. In fact us v/vanners would probably use less of the precious power and water etc than those rigs with umpteen hoses and pipes sticking out of their bums. I say let's give em heaps Ray

Hey Scoots We had a simmilar problem at Fingal Caravan park when we put Shultzys teardrop and my van on the one site at our first SEQ get together The Tweed Shire owned caravan parks have a heap of rules, they even gave us a drawing showing minimum distances between vans, maximum sizes for tarps, maximum % coverage of the site etc. When are you coming down exactly?? Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve, well it was actually fingal caravan park that said it. Doenst really matter I guess I have a van and would have got the site. I just felt sorry for anyone else who would have liked a beach front site and doesnt have a van.
Coming down? well its still very iffy. I have to go to my mothers 80th birthday in Maryborough on the 9th of dec. Problem is that because of work committments it only gives me two days to drive down from Cairns. Not being an experienced caravan tower I dont know that I could do that. So am still deciding what to do. I might end up flying and borrowing a tent. But I do bring the van i would be looking to be on the coast around the13th of dec for about five days. Scoot

So.. There is a message in santas and scoots story for all of us. The best way to hurt them is not patronise their van park. And spread the word where ever you go in south east queensland, Nobody needs that sort of crap whenyou are travelling. Maybe a few strongly worded emails to tweedShire Council from us interstaters might bring them back to Ozzey reality and that is we are all the same .. no matter what we drive, tow, or camp in, ;D Our money is the same colour as the shiney arsed, well to dos that pullin to thier park in a late model rig. WE ARE NOT SECOND CLASS TOURISTS/CITIZENS. TARGET TWEED SHIRE WITH YOUR DISATISFACTION. If this bullshit is allowed to spread then we will all be camping on someones acrerage for "The disadvantaged pre 2007 caravan touring australians" Google tweed shire or Fingal van park and give em a spray fellow vintagevanners. Regards One unhappy red person... i just cant believe that a caravan park that caterers for touring Australians could be so ........UNAUSTRALIAN

Having just had my first adventure in caravanning, I did notice that some people ain't interested in talking to you if you own a crappy old van, BUT that appears to a minority to the ones that would give you advice or help.

G'Day Whippy Read my lips... "People that aint interested in talking to people with crappy old vans" arent people . They are stuck up pieces of sh!t that have been alienated from the real Australians. Maybe its because they have spent thier entire lives holidaying "Indoors" in Motels/apartments and have never experienced the joy that comes from walking around a caravan park late arvo and being welcomed with a "G'Day mate ;D... just in time for happy hour ;D... pull up a stump ". that is oft extended by a "lesser being" in a crappy old van. Its something that apartment, cabin , or some snobby late model rig owners will never get to experience, or understand. Its called "mateship" and thats something ya just cant order with your $100,000 caravan.. ya can be the richest bastard in australia with the best rig on the road...... but without respect and acknowledgement from your fellow van park neighbours you are gunna have a bloody lonely trip. Hi We have travelled heaps over the last 10 years with our van. We actually find everyone wants to talk to us. :DWhether we tow with the Chev or the boring Rodeo. We even met the people now living in the house that John parents built and lived in for 40 years. I think I scared one of the girls saying that John lived in her bedroom!!!!!! The main reason we have been asked the size of our van is because these gi normous new fandangle monstrosities just don't fit on any site. The main problem I found was in QLD they expected everyone to pay 50% of our holiday costs when I booked 10 months in advance!!!! Most states accepted a token deposit for all the cabins and sites I booked( up to 10 at a time) Even an O/S trip only requires 10% deposit. Some QLD caravan parks think they are special for some reason. Others couldn't do enough to help us. Ticko's

That is disgusting and unAustralian. In contrast I would like to share some positive experiences. Fortunately I have only been in a QLD caravan park once and it was a good experience, although a little amusing. I went to a conference at a flash resort, and since work paid for the airfairs, thort I'd bum around at the beach for a few days after, anyway, booked into a tent-site at a park in Mooloolaba (great park, right next door to surf life saving club). But they looked at me a bit funny when I turned up wheeling a blody big suit-case and no car! - I had stuffed me little hiking tent, bag and mat in the suit-case ;D. My next positive experience was at the Surfside Park in Warnambool, early this year. Here they do not descriminate, in our row was a forty foot Winnebago motor home coach thingie, complete with little 4x4 on trailer behind, then a couple of grey army members in 60K vans and 80K 4x4s, then some tents, a couple of back packers in a clapped out Mitsu van and me and the clan in the crappy cabana (complete with awning and a 2 buck tarp to give some late arvo shade ). Pleased to report the grey army in thier 100K "+" outfits always said gidday and gave a friendly grin (even if it was over their chardy) and we had a great time - looking forward to staying there agin in March next year en-route to Mount Gambier. Next positive experience was just last weekend, on site van in east gippsland, watched the AFL grand final with a dozen or so other park regulars, drank lots of beer, ate too much chips and dip and cheese etc, sat around the camp fire til the weee hours each night, and laughed lots, had a big spit roast (which some friends put on and invited everyone within kooee), all while a dozen or so of our kids rode around together on their bikes, played in the park and chased each other amongst the gum trees. At the end of the weekend we really didn't wanna come home, and neither did the kids. Now that is what caravan parks are (and always should) be about. And most of us in that park have crappy old seventies vans onsite, but that don't matter coz we only sleep in the things anyway, we cook, eat, drink, read and play outdoors. Cheers, and happy caravanning to any of yous fellow 'trailer park trashies' ;D ;D ;D Gristy

Ok all , I hope this thread hasnt got out of control. Just to that there is no misintepretation. Here are the facts again. I rang, they questioned the size of my van and whether twas really a van or a camper. I have a Van. As far as Im aware Fingal is in NSW. Yes, they wanted me to pay all but one night as a deposit. Scoot Ps and Im still wondering whether Im insane taking PH all the way down there from here only to just about have to turn around and come back again. Scoot.

Hey Scoot Half the adventure is the journey. Your windscreen is a travelling picture show. Dont be put of by boneheaded park managers. Not all of them are like hitler. You need to develop a sixth sense that tells ya "too posh for me" when ya drive up to the gate and they start that "class distinction stuff". Just bid them good day and find somewhere else that is willing to take your money without you having to obey 50 commandments.
Just remember the first commandment " Thou shalt have a good time". ;D

Well I'll add my two bits worth too. I generally camp where there is nothing. Not everyone is keen on not having running water or a loo, but for a one nighter, i find its fine. Those of you that saw my Minicamper shot in my post orignally listed in the wanted section (looking for a small 50's van), i took this set up and also stayed in the Surfside in Warrnambool and they were great. New modern toilet facilities and very nice (even though as usual, it was windy as buggery, cold and driving rain on occasion. My other good rap is for the Tarra valley caravan park in Tarra Valley gippsland, just north of Yarram. I went on a vintage car rally last weekend with our club (they're all soft and stayed in cabins) we camped. The valley is beautiful, the park is small, cosy and friendly not to mention quiet (plenty of people though) and is literally across the road from the Tarra river (some sites back onto the river) They "reserved" one of the communal BBQ huts for us complete with stone fireplace, BBQ's, tables, music etc. Check it out, the owners were wrapped with our Model T's and set ups and I'm sure would love to see VV owners

hey Minicamper, if ever you find your way into that beaut Tarra Valley park again, drop me a line, I live just over the hill (ok about 35mins). But if you drove from the park back through Traralgon to get home to Melbourne you would have got within 5 mins of my place. Yes that is a great little park, the park managers are great people. As some one who is 1/2 way around Oz in a 1980 Toyota Trakka Hi Ace camper van,ive have never ever met so many ignorant, rude, pigs in their $80,000 4x4s towing the manditory $80,000 caravan.
I guess being in a "whizz bang" must be annoying as the $160,000 combination and their air conditioners switching on and off all night.
Ive met a lot more civil people in "Wicked" and say pre 1980 caravans with nothing to prove than the "look at me" jiggers who find it just as easy to ignor others as it is to say Hullo.
Ahhhh i feel better!!
