No Kaybee, just want to point out the fact that teardrops are not NEW to Australia and perhaps plug the Vintage Caravans group at the same time.
Dont like new ones unless they are a copy of an old one.
I hate those stupid fibreglass things.
(NO,NO,NO, I dont mean Sunliners and Kennedys, etc)
Just those horrible reproduction fibreglass teardrops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Sportsman Agree with your comments about that fibreglass stuff on tdrops, but if you want one that is clad in aluminium check out this site: www.springbankleisure.com/index.html The Retro model doesn't look too bad, but at a price of nearly £6 000 plus another £500 to have it delivered to a dealer, why would anybody want one As Reddo has proved, with some skill and lots of fun (alright, as well as grief, many tins of beer, hammered thumbs etc. etc. etc.) one can be built for a lot less. Hi threebears,
just posted a comment re teardrops on the exploreoz site, it will be interesting to see what feedback I get.
I also gave the vintagecaravans site a plug.
Perhaps we will catch up when we pass through Brissee in August.

Well, I posted on exploreoz and promptly got accused of using their site for free advertising.
Perhaps I shouldn't have bothered!
See all you friendly folks later
Leigh.

Well done Leigh, I think your message got through and was well recieved by the majority. As we know, it seems most people are fascinated by Vintage Vans, even if they don't own one. Geez there are some interesting characters on there though. The bloke having ago about 4X4 Vauxhalls shouldn't throw stones either, given the 'softroader' in his avatar. Speaking of 4X4s, Glen Ridge did a great off-road test of a 1985 Ford XF Fairmont on the Car show on channel 9 on Saturday - kinda proved you don't need two diffs to go off road. ;D Vintage Caravans - Vintage Caravans - Vintage Caravans Again, well done Tinnie

Hi the 3B's It appears that they have "shot themselves in the foot" in the very next paragraph after "teardrop vans". It goes on to mention in "Brief history" that TDs have been around since the 1930's So what do they mean by "New in Australia" I suppose they are referring to the fibreglass TDs from Germany. T@B and Reo being new in Australia. Aint knocking them. It doesnt look like a bad website for late model vans. ... whatever a late model van is Reddo

I love to comment about how the can be towed by soft-road vehicles and even some 2WD sedans.I amazes me how people have been brain washed into the need for monster 4WD's What the hell do they think people used to drag caravans behind? Sorry 4WD's are a pet hate of mine. I'll be good now.

Yes, well RTcruiser, you know what those TD's are like...endless trouble on the road unless they're towed by something substantial like a V8 4WD. In fact they only really behave themselves behind a Hummer or even better a Centurion tank. It was really sad - until these vehicles came on the market, nobody could go caravanning and everybody just stayed home. Funny thing though, somehow or another we used to go caravanning when I was a kid, and that's before Dad bought his 8 wheel troop carrier to tow the van with... ;D ;D

I like my Jap 4wd , because it can tow my Vintage van 1 day and my 2.5 tonne boat the next!! Each to his own i guess but i really don't mind what everybody else tows their vans with!! All i know is that i love vintage vanning! Sorry if i have hijacked this thread.

Hi Exocet,
Good to hear from you. No offence was intended to you or any other V V'ers with 4WD's with my comment. I was just responding to the statement on the Exploroz website re TD's being suitable for towing 'even by some 2WD sedans'.
I'm sure everyone - well almost everyone! - on the forum is relaxed about what people choose to tow their V V's with. I know I am, and if I was towing a 2.5 tonne boat, then I'd probably follow your example...
Regards,
Don Ricardo

Funny how times change though I have a Motor Manual test from the mid '60's teaming a Pixie Van with a Hillman Imp. No one bats an eyelid at this but according to Chrysler I would be hard pressed towing the Pixie with my 2.4l 1400kg PT Cruiser. My car is only rated at 500kg with a 50 ball weight. I know without solid chassis and the need for crumple zones the tow capacity of new cars has come down a bit but my car is ridiculous. It's got the same towing capacity as a Hyundai Excel!!!! They also don't recommend towing anything with a frontal area greater than 2 square metres. So this would preclude most van except a Popert or small TD's. I have a theory about this and believe it is a conspiracy to force poor unsuspecting people into buying stupid 4WD's when they don't need to.

Hi Don R, appreciate your comments, but it wasn't your comments i was referring to, it's just that if people want to own a 4WD then bloody good luck to them! By crikey we have had some fun, seen lots of amazing country in ours! And its Japanese! lol cheers Exocet

The answer is buy a Period 4X4 towcar . Centurion tank, dodge weapons carrier, austin champ, series one wooden chassied land rover, ferret scout car. Studebaker half track, leapard tank, Ford or chev blitz , ... the list goes on. Reddo,, who towed "Matilda " to Morgan behind a 1986 Turbo diesel Landcruiser......... and got told to slow down on the hay plains by a bloke in a 427 powered hot rod

hey JBJ - there is nothing wrong with getting 10 miles per gallon, cause if you arent getting 10 miles per gallon, or less, then you must be driving something less than a decent V8. !!! ;D ;D ;D I'm with you - stuff the cost - let the greenies deal with it! Just as a matter of interest - the older cars, such as 6 wheel FC's or V8 EK's ( and HQ hotrods ) can legally tow anything - if you reckon that you can do it ..... then do it!! earlee.

Hi Jbj, i agree, there is a lot of computer speak that i am also not familiar with, but LOL is very commonly used and is used to express a way to share a laugh wth whom you are communicating, that said i haven't got a clue what Fbmads abbreviation in an earlier post means ROFL, can somebody enlighten me? Just out of interest i also have been in business for 20 years, and one where there is no computer, just very hands on, so maybe i am in the dark as well about these things. cheers Exocet
