Hey, can anyone tell me... (Peter/John/anyone) I am wanting to sandblast the chassis of my sunny and re-spray (zinc paint?) Does the chassis come off easily? Can it be unbolted? I saw Reddo do this to his new find. Can it be done with a Sunny? Is it hard for a tool-challenged idiot like myself and my poor unsuspecting mate and six-pack? Dorian

I haven't done it, I think Swellwillys would be the only one on this forum I have seen do it. PM him.

Hi Dorian,
Yep chassis is removable - quite easy infact took me approx 3 hours - had the help from a mate with a forklift though.
If you scan the undercarriage you will easily see the bolts through the chassis and floor. It has been sometime now since I did the work and can not recall howmany bolts sescure the chassis to the flooring. I suspect oldtimers in its infantcy .
My job was much easier however, with all the interior gutted ! And windows removed.
If you scan the photos - 2nd in the series -Technical Section - "Sunliner - The Build Begins " You can view the chassis removed .
All the best

Thanks SW's,
Yep I found the link. Most enlightening. If I only had a forklift! We are merely two blokes with two car jacks, a six-pack and a load of bad ideas. My pal has a sand blaster. What should I do after sand blasting? Zinc paint or something? Thanks for the reply.
cheers dorian

hi dorian i think minicamper mentioned por15 as the thing to paint your chassis with. it doesn't require complete rust removal, just a clean-up to remove flaking on the surfaces, so you don't really need to sandblast too heavily. you brush it on and as it dries it flows to give a finish as good as spraying and the surface is as tough as old boots. you can hit it with a hammer and the coating doesn't crack at all. sound a bit like a miracle, but it's all true. here's an aus link listing distributors in all states. www.ppc.au.com/geoff 'n jude

Hey, Geoff and Jude, Hoooley Dooley! That seems like magic paint doesn't? Incredible. Just the ticket. The rust isn't too bad so that sounds perfect. Thanks very much for the reply. I'll buy it. Should I remove the chassis first or not worry about it,you reckon? dorian

Hi dorian,
I wouldn't consider pulling the van off the chassis unless you wanted to give the van a MAJOR rebuild. I believe nothing will go back like it was meant to be.
I've done a bit of work on my Sunliner, & I found that the chassis is pretty accessible from under the van.
But its your call.

Thoroughly agree with you Dennis, no point in making the job harder than it is. You would only need to pull it off if you need to replace severly rusted chassis parts. I am about to paint the chassis myself on the Sunliner I'm restoring........haven't done much on it lately, but the problem is I need more time. . I'm sharing my time between the Carlight, Sunliner and Olympic.......must have a bit of variety in life you know, ! ;D ;D

I totally totally agree with Jailbar !
I removed the chassis as I had a priority to dump the van in the weeds and I also had huge reservations about the space frame chassis( hollow tube chassis ) with regards to cancer !

Sorry for the tardiness in the reply guys but I've away from the site for a few days. Thanks kindly for the replies. Good advice methinks.
Yes, as the van is in such original nic it seems a risky business to remove the chassis. This applies to no one more than me. Example: Over the weekend I removed the old flooring, used it as a template for the new lino (which took an age to order in), cut out the new lino, too easy. I had a beer and congratulated myself on my enterprise, only to discover I'd traced the wrong bloody side and done it in reverse. Ruined! Had to throw it all away. I was shattered. Now there is a very good reason for this mistake. I am a complete and utter knob. Put a tool in my hand and I revert to a simpleton. Luckily I have a forgiving wife. So ahem I think I'll keep the chassis on...
Ordering new lino this week (groan).

Dorian, I bought the POR 15 to-day, $72 for a litre, and hope to have the chassis done before the weekend is out. (the wife insists actually : Now you can go and buy the blue lino you liked ;D ;D ;D Must finish this other Sunliner soon as I need more room in my shed! Regards Peter. P.S. But I can't play an instrument. ;D ;D

cheers Pete. True i can play the piano and write books but it's terribly emasculating when I stuff up like this - and inevitably I do. Leaves me quite depressed. I envy all you guys who can work with tools and not become one. Looking forward to any pics of the restored sunny you can share. d
