They left S.A. a couple of weeks ago and after touring the S.W. are heading north. The VV is a Globe Trotter towed by a Ford Prefect??? with a 4litre power plant & 5 speed box , does all the things they want for a different way of a holiday. Regards Snail

Amazing !! I wondered how they moved it until I saw the 4 litre powerplant which in itself must be an interesting conversion.

Hi snail /mark Aaaaaahhhh what a great combination ... something completely different.....and colour coded to match as well. cool . Makes ya wander why anyone would want to tow a vintage van with something other than a classic car . 4 litres and 5 cogs... great stuff . thanks goes to snail for catching up with the owners and to mark for posting the pix. Hi G & J On the way home from ... and while at Morgan last year we got asked a million times..."is that a Globetrotter you are towing???" Apparently they where fairly popular in south Oz. Where they made down that way somewhere??? Mate had a Pale green prefect panel van with "bat wing doors" on the back in the 70s. He inhereited it when his mum and dad sold out of thier "corner shop" 4 square general store. We lowered it 2" all round with 6" rims. straight through copper exhaust, moon equip and STP stickers....and being a p/van it had to have the obligatory "N.R.N.R." sticker on the passengers side door. slow as a wet week but looked cool.... and thats all that mattered. cant remember ever achieving the speed limit ... not even in Woolies carpark so never got booked in it. happy days revisited.... cool Reddontaskwhathemattresswas4

hi reddo i believe the globetrotters were made in s.a. but have no info on where or when. i'm sure someone here has all the goss on them. when we bought the roadmaster, the yard also had a 12' globetrotter for sale, but at the time we decided to go BIGGER than those little fellas. the trotter might have been a bit easier to tow, but once we're 'there', the roadmaster sure has more room and being their "luxury liner", it was better equipped and more comfortable. no regrets - just have to get a trotter as well - later on. (and a kennedy), (and build the 5th wheeler - highway palace style but smaller). Really looking forward to retiring next april so all these things can be done. geoff 'n jude

"True ....size does matter.. but how you use it is more important". Just ask the captain of the Titanic. "big " is no good if ya cant control it ;D ;D ;D vintage caravans, vintage caravans, vintage..... Reddo with the 12ft woody

Hi All, Globe Trotter vans were built at Port Road Hindmarsh SA. Owner of the business was Mr. Dicky Bassett. Part of the factory still stands and is now part of Raptis Sea Foods, just opposite the Adelaide Entertainiment Centre. If you enter into Raptis Sea Foods by the back lane (First Street) and look up at the Besser Block wall you can still see the green & white sign "Globe Trotter Caravans", this is in good condition, however, I believe the building is due for demolition. They also manufactured other products like post drills, stilsons etc. with the name of Globe or Globe Products. Later they manufactured Globe Mag Wheels. Raym

Sweet looking Prefect, practical upgrade modifications and with the van hooked up looks well proportioned. VERY NICE.

Hey nice rig! I bet that Prefect is a little rocket Standard pommie motors are great for rally cars (if their worked) but definately useless for anything else other than an anchor. - speaking from personal experience, my first 2 cars were pommie 4 pot Fords. ;D Cheers, Tinnie PS Hope you guys go to the mount in 2008, I'd love to see how you shoe horned a four litre sixpot into that engine bay

Gidday guys, Just a small point on Col and Lizzy's 59 Ford Prefect...its an Escort 2 litre slightly modified not a 4 litre and behind that sits a Pintara 5 speed with 2 litre disk brake set up and Escort rack and pinion steering, which we basically bolted straight in.
I posted some pics of both the Prefect and the van when Col first purchased it late last year but the powers to be seemed to have deleted them. The van has been tastefully done up in a 50s and 60s rock and roll theme.
On a very personal note,Col and Lizzy were married about 6 weeks ago,so if the van is rockin don't bother knockin!!!!!
See you all on the track.
