Hi All, Was driving thru Berri in the Riverland today on a car club run and spotted this in a front yard. I have been told it is going in the annual Riverland van demo derby. Cheers Steve

Hi Urkel,
Somebody from SA put up a post a while ago about an old Don sitting at a tip. I can't find the post at the moment, but my memory was that it was up somewhere near you. He said it was pretty dilapidated, so I wonder if it was this van?
Looks like some of the useful stuff has been ripped off it (badges, etc), but the windows frames and the corner stabilisers look like they're in not bad nick (relatively speaking) and could be worth saving for someone. And who knows what might be inside?
Just goes to show - as has been said many times before on this forum - demolition derbys are a waste! (And just so that my comments are not misunderstood or misinterpreted, I'm saying this in relation to all the vans of all makes or none that are destroyed in this manner)!

Hi Don & Urkel,
Unfortunately demolition derbies are a fact of life in the speedway scene.
I dont think anything could be done to prevent them. The average speedway fan I've come across is generally a pretty run of the mill middle to lower class person, with no great interest in issues other than those that directly affect them or their enjoyment.
They are not the problem here. The problem is the promoter/organiser of the events. They are 900% in it for the dollars only. While people go to these events & enjoy the entertainment, they will continue to promote them.
Point is, I believe that the audience wouldnt care if the vans to be demolished were only 1970"s aluminium vans ( for example).
But my experience with speedway promoters, while not very extensive, is that they dont give a stuff about anything but dollars, & what they see as their right to run their sport the way they want to with interference.
If you believe its worth trying to stop them, or at least moderate the damage to the older vans, why not find out who promotes speedway in your area. Then try to arrange a meeting with them, & rationally put your case to them to maybe restrict the ages of vans in their next derby to exclude the older & more potentially saveable vans.
Its going to come down to a lot of effort, & maybe some dollars need to be spent. Maybe you could suggest pre entry with details of the vans to be supplied several months in advance, & have the option of buying the valuable vans & / or replacing them with a less valuable/desireable van.
I know several people were after Lucille for the next derby, & I know several other owners that have refused to sell their vans for destroying.
But it really is their right to do what they want with their possessions. All you can try to do is persuade them otherwise, & accept it if you fail & the van gets destroyed.
Same as cars in paddocks getting crushed.

I raised a post last year about cessnock show demo derby. something like 20 old vans where put to the slaughter. I managed to track down the promoter a day or so after the event. i asked where he got the vans from...he replied all where for free... i cried .. I asked what happend to all the old windows, ice chstes, sinks, knobs, hatches and so on.. He said .. we had a 2 tonne skip for aluminium and stainless... i continued to cry We smashed all the glass out of the windows. .. crying turned to uncontrollable sobbing We saved some of the fridges and the dirt urchants took em home for beer fridges.... By now i was on my knees and totally unconsolable The rest went to the tip after we done ten laps and reduced them to pulp.... ......Last thing i remember was screaming.. "Murderers" and grabbing at his throat..... i woke up in intensive care Reddo

Hi Mark I didn't want to get too close and personal, as it was in someones yard. However, from the name on the letterbox, I got a phone no, if someone wants to get more info. Cheers.
