Hi There :)
Just joined this forum tonight but have been browsing for a few nights now. Loving all your pics & you lot seem to be very helpful with info about vans....so heres a couple of questions i need help with as its all new to us & we have no clue (i'll admit it). *sigh*
My Hubby and I are interested in buying a vintage van(maybe sunliner for eg) but are wondering as our carport is on a medium size slope driveway, can we somehow make the van level enough to use whilst immobile? Its going to be used as a spare room as well as going away in. What would be the strongest, best, safest way to do this?
Ok next question...what can i expect (rough estimate) to pay if i see a van in a different state and want it shipped to us? For example from QLD/VIC to us in NSW what would we be up for, for shipping?
If we are lucky enough to find a van in NSW that suits us and its not rego's or has no towing permit, how much is it for each of those? I have started to save and need to know all this so i can budget properly for it all. Selling my Morris Minor soon too, so that will help with finances.
To be honest im a bit embarrassed about asking these things, but i wont know otherwise and would also like your personal opinions or tips on getting started/buying vintage, so i thought id give it a shot.
We were planning on doing this a bit later in life but as we arent tired down with commitments (only shift work) or busy raising children, we are starting now. Its just the 2 of us but we have a fur family and want them to come travelling with us also. Theres quite a few pet friendly caravan parks that ive seen too, which is fantastic!
Thanks so much for listening to my babble & i appreciate any help or advice you can give us.
Cheers...Lu ;D

Getting a permit to move a caravan in NSW is not difficult. Make sure you have the necessary paperwork ie.reciept for caravan to prove you own it..........your ID (licence)......PINK slip for the caravan...........then money or Visa for the amount of approx $16 (last time I did it) for permit to move.
Price of the van will be what you are prepared to pay for whatever condition.

Hi Lulu, Transport costs are pricey plus caravans are not car carriers friends because you just cant drive them on and require extra effort.A car can cost anywhere between $450 to $650 Brisbane to Sydney.I would imagine roughly the same price from Melbourne. Cheers Dave

Thanks so much Humpty & Dave, appreciate the help. Tonight we were discussing a few places we'd like to travel to. Theres a big list of places we like the sound of already and we dont even have a van yet...hehe Oh well its good to have a goal and something to look forward to. Its funny but my husband has never been into anything vintage, retro or classic (with the one and only exception of my morris minor but thats it) Im the one that loves classic cars, vans & 50's type furniture ect ect. Then that all changed when he saw Truckys Sunliner... he was sold. I was told i dont have bad taste after all..PMSL Now he's been on here browsing almost as much as me. WooHoo theres hope yet. Thanks again and if theres any other tips you think i need to know or just want to say G'Day, please do. Cheers..LuLu

Hi lulu Try this mob for caravan transporting. www.trewintransport.com.au/about_us.html. I got the link from this mobs link www.movingcars.com.au/index.phpMight be worth saving both if you ever decide to buy a car intwerstate. In this ebay day and age there is a lot of stuff being shifted around Australia. Cars , bikes, boats and our old vans . There seems to be plenty of car transporters as well as a few motorbike transport co,s about but not a real lot offering van transport. There is a company that delivers new caravans from campberfield vic to Newcastle. I used them last year to take the wifes Olympic Debonair as a back load to thier depot. They charged the new owner $450 . he drove over from Geelong to collect it at thier depot. Just another option if you find something in VIC. Reddo hope this helps

Reddo & G& J..thats great, those links, thanks for that guys Actually my next door neighbour is a Truckie & transports cars & trucks for a living, i never even thought to ask him. He's had little trucks & tarago type cars & big 4 wheel drives before, i wonder if a small van (if bondwood for eg) would fit. Its one of those trucks that has a 2storey level type deal. Hmmm might have to run it by him as hes always interstate, i know QLD a lot, not sure about VIC though (they are always in bloody VIC grr). He once said he can move anything large for me if i need it but we were talking about a large wardrobe at the time, not a caravan..pmsl You never know, if he cant move a small van, he'll at least get a good giggle out of it when i ask him. Humpty, lol..i totally believe you that your name is the shape of your van and not you..hehe There are 2 vans im interested in atm but are ply and hubbies not too keen if theres another option, like fiberglass for eg. So if you dont mind we would love to see some pics of the sunliner you mentioned. Can you pretty pretty please send details to us at rtp@exemail.com.au i would really appreciate it. The sunliners are our favourite and the only van we both agree on, so when you get a min please send some piccies thru, i would love that! We are only 2-3hrs north of Newcastle, so that would be perfect! Thanks so much

True he may not have been into "old anything" a few weeks ago but he has graduated into "The world of vintage caravanning" with distinctions. Bondwoods rool OK Cheers Reddo... Reddo Will tell Hubby that..lol Its funny he fell in love with the sunliners as soon as he saw them (who wouldnt), especially Truckys, i think hes a bit traumatised he cant find one that superb!! Would be FANTASTIC to find one in half as good condition as that. The search and dissagreements of ply verses fibre will continue too i guess. The main concern was it would involve getting marine ply and apparently its a bit pricey. Im happy as long as it has character, good storage, maybe a bit of rego & no rot/bad structual damage. Then anything laminate or chrome inside would be an extra bonus. My pen name in here should have been laminate lu, i just love the stuff..lol Theres no probs with me having to make curtains & paint inside, just the basic reno type things, but if its anything too fiddly or too much to do thats a bit of a worry. Can understand where hes coming from of course. No one wants to buy trouble. Bad structual damage we'll give a miss, no thanks. The way i see it we are buying vintage, not a brand new van, so you have to expect a couple of little imperfections here and there. Hopefully like i said those imperctions are sewable or paintable. Just as long as its as oringinal inside as possible as i like the tradtional colours, material, door handles ect, theres no way id get a sunliner and paint or decorate it in bright purple for eg. or put modern stainless steel handles on, that would be a crime! ;D spyder Martin will be getting a call from us very shortly Thankyou very much!!!! Hi G & J Nice to see you again *waves hand* If we get either one of the 2 vans im looking at & hubby isnt working that weekend, we will be at Munmorah with bells on! He left his work diary (with his shifts listed) at work. Im pretty sure he's working though *sigh* but he's finding out today for sure as we would LOVE to go. Damn shiftwork The couple we are seeing on Monday about the vans mentioned Munmorah to me last night. I think they are going. Is Munmorah an annual meet?

hi lulu
hope hubby's not working so you can make it to munmorah and yes, it's an annual event, normally the weekend after mother's day.
you could always get him to drop the van off or he could go to work from munmorah - i did that for a couple of the days when we were at coledale last year.

I hope hes not working too, cant wait till he gets home so i know. He'd have to have a couple of RDO's to go because its too far to go back to work from there. Im so pleased to hear its an annual event, its now marked it on my calendar. The last time i was at munmorah i was 15 and flirting with this cute boy who i then passed out in front of, because of heat stroke. To this day ive never lived it down. My friends parents have the same holiday house there still, but its rented to a permant tennant who is giving them hassels. Up here theres 2 lovely caravan parks right on the beach. One is at Hat Head the other is Crescent Head. We are planning on taking the van to one of them as its close to home if something goes wrong..lol so that will be our first trip...15mins from home Once we are confident we'll go a bit further like maybe a whole 30mins from home to south west rocks...hehe
