Hi Guy's We just got back from the NHRA Nationals in Goulburn, the yellow F1 & Teardrop are owned by a guy named Morrie & he lives in Hornsby, I photographed his rig, and I will post the image on the site as soon as I can, he built the Teardrop himself, it is a really nice unit, I will also post some other car/van combos that were there when I work out photobucket. The NHRA was a big event over 350 rod's & customs in attendance. Paul & Michelle.

Lovely outfit. Congratulations to the owner. My son just looked over my shoulder and said "Wow, that's sick!" High praise indeed! I was trying to work out from the photo whether the back section lifts up to reveal a galley...or is the galley inside? Dave or Casper? Now, all you TD aficionados - what is the official definition of a teardrop? Franklin 1 posted two pictures a couple of days ago: vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=photo&thread=1183252369&page=1Somebody - can't remember who, sorry - suggested that the first picture wasn't of a teardrop because the van concerned wasn't a true teardrop shape, while the second picture (apparently a near to full-sized van) was a teardrop because it had the requisite shape. I had always assumed that 'teardrop' refers to a style of van (ie a cabin composed of a bed space and an "outside" galley in a "boot" at the back), which may or may not be strictly teardrop in shape. Does the van in the Dave's photo qualify as a teardrop in the strict sense given it's height and what appears to be a more spacious interior. I'm not saying it doesn't, I'm just curious about what qualifies as a teardrop. I'm probably stirring up a hornet's nest... ;D ;D But then that's what gives the forum it's life Don Ricardo

Glad you raised that one Don, I will eagerly await the answers......or debate ;D That pic above does look like there is a hinged panel in the rear of the van, hinting at a rear-external galley. Cheers, Gristy

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.............................
Here's how I'd think.
If it's sort of teardrop shape and I have to crawl through the door to get into it and can't stand up in it, I'd call it a teardrop trailer.
If its sort of teardrop shape and I can sort of get into it on both feet and sort of stand up in it then I'd call it a teardrop caravan.
Both irrespective of having a rear galley or not.
Is there really an official definition??
Just my thoughts,
Terry.

My 2 Bobs worth Not singling out rodders here in particular , but i have noticed that a lot of vans i see lately being towed behind rods seem to have the shape of that yellow one. sort very pronounced high front and dropping away like a teardrop at the rear.. but with no rear hatch.... almost "cartoon like". I looked at a very nice "Caravan" the other day in Kurri Kurri about 20 mins from my place. It was very similar in shape to the yellow van. All done with clear over woodgrain and had a smooth aluminium roof. wooden windows. all completely rebuilt with new ply, modern laminex kitchen and wardrobe ,on new chassis. so .. its a replica a very nice van at $7500 From what i have seen most of these are vans not what i would call TDs. ( no rear hatch/galley) The one at kurri had a microwave.. no stove. a mini fridge, a few stowage cupboards and that was all across the front. Sleeping arrangements was a pull down club lounge seat that converted to a futton style bed at the rear of the van. Full sized door with full head room across the front when standing at the fridge and microwave. In the 3 years i have been on this forum i havent seen anyone put up a photo of a van they have found that is an original 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s van that is this shape. I.e: steep front, full sized door, kitchen across the front and dropping away at the rear like a TD. My idea of a TD is: . No more than roughly 9 feet long ( bearing in mind they are called teardrop trailers but the length isnt critical i suppose) . A short door ( or 2 ) that cannot be walked through standing up. . Sleeping arrangements in the front, . Rear opening hatch with kitchen/galley at the rear. . Must definitely "look right" and have that "teardrop" shape. I real bug bear of mine is people calling "grey hound transporters" Teardrops. To me they are "camper trailers" . True they might might have the right layout inside and meet most of the criteria i have mentioned but with vertical fronts and backs they look like a "loaf of bread" or a "modern toaster"....... Just dont look like a teardrop........and after all, that is where they get thier name from ..."the shape of a tear drop". The van at kurri makes good sense i suppose but not a teardrop in my opinion. The yellow van in the photo appears to have a rear opening hatch. If so i will have to admit it meets almost all of my criteria to be called a TD. Its just a bit "pregnant" ( hieght) As Don has mentioned we will probably end up stirring up a hornets nest and everyone is entitled to thier own opinion and have a say. No harm done is there. Reddo ....half baked replica TD builder

OK, my turn. I consider any teardrop(ish) shaped van to be of the teardrop family. These could be either very small such as a Sportsman Cub, medium sized such as a Sportsman Deluxe, or as a larger size such as the one behind the F100. Teardrops were originally called camper trailers or more commonly as Caravanettes. I think something with the kitchen externally at the rear would be a camping trailer as most of the activity occurs outside the Van where larger ones could be considered Caravanettes as that more accurately describes them as a small caravan. Either way I like them all. I can see why people who build replicas build them as big as their needs require, and as they are not ruining an original but just copying the basic shape that is fine by me. I often wish my Sportsman was just a little bigger (so that more internal activity was possible???!!!) and especially now that my daughter and her friend are coming with us as far as Alice Springs. Me thinks the sleeping arrangements are going to approximate life in a sardine can! Only two more sleeps, cheers for now, Leigh.

hey there mrfj55,
its good to read your posts, but, did you know that having your postS in CAPITALS IS LIKE SHOUTING AT SOMEONE. ITS JUST A POLITE THING TO NOT USE CAPITALS OR UPPER CASE, unless of course there is a reason to SHOUT ( SUCH AS WINNING TATTSLOTTO). etiquette.
kind regards edward.

I never understood the capitals thing. If anything its bigger, so easier to read. Who decided what web / email etiquitte was anyway? Porbably the same person that came up with 'C U L8er Leg8er' style of stuff. For the record I have a degree in English and I don't recall anything about capitals, except for having to use them to start a sentence, but then email wasn't reall invented then..... Not having a go at Mr Nobody, just saying I don't care if people use upper case or lower case, write in the queens english, bonza rippa ozzie slang, or txt-me-m8 style stuff. Besides when using the word FORD it should be in capitals ;D ;D.
Sorry Maurie, now I am guilty of hijacking ya thread! Gristy

Geez Ed You are being a bit harsh on those that use caps lock. What about us "visually impaired" types. We welcome those that type in capitals or bold letters over 2" high ;D My eyesight is that bad I have to wipe the horizontal lines of snot off the screen after i have read each post. The computer screen ends up looking like a venetian blind The issue of "netiquette" and the use of capitals in a post being considered "Shouting" has been done to death before . Not just here but on a heap of other sites Most people dont give a rats about font, text, spelling mistakes, punctuation etc....as long as the post is ledgable and the author has got thier point across then we are all happy chappys here on www.vintagecaravans.com . Reddo

Here is a closer picture of the Van. Certainly wider, longer and higher than a conventional teardrop but similar in shape. Call it whatever you like, I still like it! I have a bunch more pictures of Vintage Vans behinds rods etc, which I will put up in a separate post later.

Post your van in one of those bubble envelope thingys to Mt Gambier next year. Boogey on over in your ride... .. pick up the packet at the post office.
