CARAMASTER CARAVANSManufacturer unknown. Location, most likely Sydney, NSW
At the 2021 Vintage Caravan Nationals in Victor Harbor, I met an attendee from Victoria who told me that at home they had a Caramaster caravan, but that they had not been able to find any information about the brand. Subsequent investigation has turned up only a couple of tiny snippets about Caramaster. An advert published by a Millard dealer in the Sydney Morning Herald [SMH] on Saturday, 21 July 1962 (page 32) offered a 'brand new', 4 berth, aluminium Caramaster caravan for sale: Another advert, this time from Homebush Caravans, printed in the SMH on Saturday, 11 July 1964 (page 38) listed a used 12 ft 6 in, 4-berth Caramaster for sale:
The same caravan had previously been advertised by Homebush Caravans (the phone numbers match) in the SMH on Wednesday, 1 July 1964 (page 27), but this advert stated that the van was 2 and a half years old. That indicates that the van was built in 1961/62, that is at about the same date as the Millard dealer advert: It is hard to draw any conclusions about Caramaster from this information, apart from the fact that they seemed to be being built in the early 1960's. One possibility is that Caramaster was a small manufacturer that didn't advertise in the Sydney or other press. Another possibility is that 'Caramaster' was a model name for vans built by an as yet unidentified manufacturer, or that 'Caramaster' was a name used for caravans sold by a particular dealer under a badge engineering arrangement. If anyone has information about Caramaster or any photos of a Caramaster caravan, it would be good to hear more. All images sourced from www.newspapers.comDon Ricardo
