Hi folks Picked up this renno job, listed as a ‘72 Telstar I haven’t been able to find any info on it, and I’m not too sure on whether the year etc is correct. Chassis number E1179 The has bottle on the front is stamped as a 66 bottle. Any ideas? Its got some ceiling rot that I’ll have to work on and some frame damage, but it’s not too extensive thankfully. When I have some time off it’ll probably start as a skin off job and take it from there! From what I can tell I won’t be able to re-do the ceiling without taking the top off, it’s sandwiched between the roof and wall frames. Cheers!

Hi and welcome teammckay, Your van is a Hilandale,16x8 front bunks and rear double bedroom.the 66 gas bottle is not the year of the van which will be 1968. Are you sure the chassis number doesn’t start with B? Hilandale s usually did. Hope this helps Cheers hughdeany

Wow thanks so much! I knew there was something fishy going on - I’ve attached the remnants of the sticker, which (in my high res version) you can see A.V. JEN…… and it fades out. So that confirms it! Chassis number attached. It’s a pretty serious piece of box steel, and it’s in better nick than the rest of the chassis, which is suspicious especially if you say the sequence is wrong. It’s got the original stove and fridge in it which I’m hoping I’ll be able to resurrect as part of the resto too 😄 Attachments:

Hi again, AV Jennings took over the build of Hilandale at a late stage, maybe they changed chassis numbers to E prefix, not unheard of for companies to do this. I couldn’t remember the model, but do now after seeing the sticker,Hilandale Telstar. Remove the fridge and turn it upside down for a few days, this always helps with old fridges! Good luck with your reno. Cheers hughdeany

Hi Teammckay and Hughdeany,
Hilandale did indeed use 'E' as a prefix for their serial numbers at a later point in their production. There are a few examples around where we can clearly see that the letter is 'E'. As Hughdeany has suggested, the new prefix may have atarted to be used when the company was taken over by A V Jennings, but I don't think we have enough information to confirm that at the moment. A V Jennings was advertising Hilandale caravans under their umbrella in 1969, so the takeover must have happened by that year, and possibly prior to that.
Of course, the use of the 'E' prefix does cause some confusion, because 'E' was also used for some Viscount models and for Evernew caravans, just to keep us on our toes!
Hughdeany a question for you: You made reference to Telstar as a Hilandale model name. Is that correct? I am presuming there is no link to the caravans built and sold under the brandname of Telstar?

Hi Don, Telstar was a model that Hilandale used, others were Carmate,Panther,Birdie and a few more I have forgotten! Nothing to do with Telstar caravans in Ballarat. Cheers hughdeany
