Awesome chev's Geoff. Are you planning a combined 70th & 50th party for 'em next year?? My dad had a '57 210 with the 6 pot in it, reckoned it was by far the best car he'd ever owned. From memory, I think he traded it on a HD holden 'coz it was getting a bit old' - he still regrets doing that!! Cheers, Tinnie

Hi Tickos
If you bring the 57 to Mt Gambier for the Nationals in 2008 we could have both 57,s there together , are your colours Green Shannon / biscay original chev colours ? When your 57 appeared in Australian classic cars i bought it & have kept it in my collection of 57 literature

Geoff, what's the secret to keeping the old Chev 216ci Blue Flame motors running good I've got two of them, one in my 39 Chev, the other in my 51 Chev Ute. I'm unable to get them running like Holden motors .....I've got a couple of red motor Holdens that tow vans, and continually run sweet on premium unleaded, plus a little redline lead substitute additive occasionally. The two Chev motors run sweet for a while, then go "off". They're both running like pigs at the moment. The 39 was used a couple of months ago towing a van on about a 280km round trip, and its done little work since......took the plugs out the other day and they're as black as ......seriously carboned up? I also run the Chevs on premium unleaded. A mechanic told me that the 39 will need regular plug changes as it doesn't like the fuel, but there's no fuel choice The 51 isn't being used to tow a van, but runs rough in the idle/low rev range, then runs sweet once its cruising. I'm buggered if I know ..... The 39 is using Lucas AS72 plugs.... Mark

Mark That sounds like it's running a bit rich and or the plugs are to cold for the fuel, try getting some plugs 1 or 2 stages hotter and see how that goes. Does it blow any black smoke from the exhaust? Greg PS: assuming it has an oil bath air cleaner, make sure you do not overfill it with oil.

Mark, I used to drive a 46 Fleetmaster and only ever ran it on plain unleaded with Flashlube every tank load.Never seemed to have any trouble. Must admit though all my old cars never liked sitting around getting little use. don

Hi Mark Hope the Ford guys don't read about a couple of sick Chev,s Carbon fouled plugs most often caused by carby problems. Mostly caused by an over-rich, air-fuel mixture. Check for a sticking choke, clogged air cleaner, or a carburetor problem - float level high, defective needle or seat, etc. My '37 ran like a pig for a while too I organised a guy from Flash Lube to come to a Car Club Meeting as guest speaker. He had a Torana that ran like a pig as well. He switched to Mobile Synergy 2000 and he said that it fixed the Torana's problem. I now run the '37 on Mobil Premium unleaded Synergy with lead susitute additive Flash Lube. It has fixed the problem in the '37 If I can't get Mobile Synergy I fill up with B.P. Ultimate Premium unleaded It is well documented these new fuels go off as we don't use our collector cars a great deal, I always fill up on the way out not on the way home. Apparently if Shell Optimax sits around for a long time in your fuel tank , it can gel up a bit. As for the Lucas Plugs - never heard or seen of them. Just make sure that you have the right plugs in We can't have Chev's running around like pigs. If this doesn't fix the problem, I'm buggered if I know either. Geoff

shhh don't tell the Ford guys, but my partner Jenni's 64 Compact Fairylane runs sweet, the ol' 302 ticks along nicely ...... and loves its Caltex Vortex ...... The Chevs are run on BP 98, and no, haven't noticed any excessive black smoke. Mobil Synergy .......never tried that ....sounds like the go Thanks for your input guys, think I'll get the carby looked at on the 39 .....and try some hotter plugs ..... and see if I can get these Chevs running like the Holdens .... No comment from the FoMoCo nuts.
Except to say we wouldn't have any of these problems if the shiney bums that make the magical legislation hadn't donged leaded on the head. Ya can tell none of 'em have got anything in the shed at home that's pre 1986! Ahh, the good old days when you used to see a nice white tail pipe after a good hunt up the highway, no chance of carboned up plugs then.
FYI, I also have a mate who has for a number of years sworn by Shell Optimax.
