ROVER CARAVANManufactured by Rover Caravan Company Knightsbridge, South Australia
While seeking information about Roven caravans in response to a query from Rovenowner today, I came across the following news item printed in the Port Lincoln Times published on Thursday, 3 August 1939 (page 2): (Source: National Library of Australia nla.gov.au/nla.news-article96737859 ) The article about recent events in Poonindie, a town on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, tells us that a caravan built by the Rover Caravan Company had been on display in the town. The Rover Caravan Company was based, so we are told, in Knightsbridge, which is now apparently an area within the Adelaide suburb of Leabrook. This is the first reference to this particular pre-War caravan company we have seen, and the article doesn’t tell us anything about the caravan in question. We know about pre-War Rover caravans that were built in Collingwood, Victoria, however it seems unlikely that there was any link between the two manufacturers. It seems to be another example of the same name being used by different manufacturers in different states. Don Ricardo
