Not a vintage van but this is an example of how horribly wrong it can go. Taken from Eyewatch East Gippsland Police Facebook Page. PROVIDENCE PONDS When towing, drivers are advised to be aware of the total weight carrying capacity that their vehicle is able to tow. This includes the extra weight inside the vehicle and inside the object being towed. Drivers should also gain experience in towing large and heavy loads. Safety chains are a must and a good solid 'D' shackle attaching chains to the tow bar can also eliminate the trailer coming loose from the towing vehicle. A holiday ended in disaster yesterday for a family returning to Melbourne from interstate. They were driving on the Princes Hwy, Providence Ponds when they lost control of their vehicle which was towing a caravan. The caravan has jack-knifed and both vehicle and caravan have flipped on their side. The driver was taken to hospital for precautionary checks and released. No other person was injured. Both the caravan and the vehicle were written off. Please take extra care on the road during the summer and school holiday period.

Up here in SE Qld we see one a week (that we know about) "Lets go to Qld & take everything we own" & we will buy the smallest tow vehicle we can" One can stand at a rest stop & look at the overloaded moderns, being towed by utes that are classified to 3 x ton towing? ? See example above!! We have just sold a Prado that struggled with a 2.3 ton van, now Toyota have increased the Prado's limit to 3 x ton, & de-sized the engine....one wonders.

As a regular user of the Pacific Highway, I continually shake my head at the speed that these rigs are travelling. Just because the speed limit says you can drive at 100 or 110 kph, doesn't mean you have to do that when you're towing. There is no margin for error at that pace. Perhaps we need to return to lowering the towing speed in all states? We should all be aiming to make emergency workers like SGTL unemployed! After all, she wants to spend more time restoring her vintage caravans!!

We had a mechengineer give a talk at our car club. Reckoned it would take one 3 tonne loaded caravan or horsefloat rollover and death followed by one decent lawyer and any respectable engineer with the irrefutable scientific proof available today that that proves the 3 tonne limit on most of these popular tow vehicles is a joke and the inquest result would turn the heavy caravan and horse float industry upside down. Twin cab utes the most dangerous of all!! A Pandora’s box the govt has allowed to be opened, is aware of and freaking about how to turn it back.im staggered the prado has been lifted to 3 tonne tow capacity. What ever happened to the old rule you must heavier than what you are towing?commonsense!,,jenno
