Hi santa Spats, in my opinion look cool on most vehicles . i have seen some home made spats on old vans that look great . Other attempts have, in my opinion , actually made the van look ugly . Its a personl thing i suppose. what appeals to one person will look like vomit to another . they can be made to fit in the existing well arch same as they do on a car or as large as you like. Have a look at the spats on Mauries "Doris" they are larger than the norm but in my opinion they give the old Atlantic character . No matter what you end up fitting make sure it is easily removed when you need to do a wheel change / puncture repair etc. JBJ recently raised the subject of getting wheels out from under gaurds / bodywork on vans and i agree with his idea of cutting extra material out of the wheel arch to allow for easy wheel removal. The spats will cover any evils created while cutting out the arch. Your design looks cool mate. What about making the bottom edge of the spat extend down below the lower edge of the van by a few inches just to break that long straight edge from front to back of the van??? No matter what the design. i say go for it. Only takes the removal of 1/2 dozen screws when ya get sick of looking at them Oh bye the way . Get yourself something more comfortable to sit on while ya working. That green dome dont look real comfy. does your pushbike have a seat ;D ;D ;D Reddo

Thanks Reddo oh wise one ;D ;D ;D That green dome thingy is a 70s lampshade that i was going to use as a template to trace around to open up the spat similar to Kaybees Van I plan to lower the van be about three inches so that should get it looking lower anyway. Cheers, Santa

Hi Santa I love the shpe of the spats as you have them, a word of caution here is the left side one appears to be very close to the door and depending on thickness may interfere with opening the door fully.
With lowering the van, you will find it next to impossible to transverse service station driveways, most standard vans of the era used to scrape their bum entering or leaving, unless you could get sufficient angle which was a rarity, although these days most garages seem to have wider driveways.
Just a couple of points to ponder. Greg

Hi Groovy The front of the tow car, 1947 Chev Pickup, scrapes anyway so that wont be a problem. Ive got an old set of wheelie bars off a drag car in the shed so I could always use the little wheels off them on the back of the van ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Yes I have already checked the door opening and if I make the spats from 1/2inch marine ply it will clear OK, Cheers, Santa

Hey Santa, The spats look cool If your gunna lower the van, why not bolt the wheel bars on the back, give it the ultra low'n'qwik look! ;D ;D ;D Tinnie Think I've had a few too many Tinnies....... Seriously, if you can get onto something that'll fit, you could run a bit of metal around the top edge of the spats (My van has 'em - check in General under "tinnies new aquisition'), finish it of real nice.

Hi Tinnie... Yeah I already got some alloy to try around the top of the spats when I cut them out as well as along the top of the numberplate pod just to break up the large panels a bit If it looks like shit I wont put it on ;D ;D ;D Cheers, Santa

Old towel on milk crate to sit or stand - worked for cheapskate me reddo - surprised you didn't know that one. Wait on - having milk crates is annoying the milk companies whose property I believe they are. Lucky I returned mine. I now use an item I call R2D2 (from some movie) - has step up sides - is cone shaped, flat topped and is for standing on in libraries (about height of a milk crate too). Good for sitting on too. council may have a few old ratty looking ones to get rid of Reddo. Can we help you with anything else? Oh spats? Lowering the van - I guess but not what I will do with anything I build - but then I go bush. Spats are out because of rocks and mud which I want the wheels to get rid of, not collect underneath. Different horses for different courses eh? Besides I'm lazy and all that extra work to change a tyre - not bone idle me mate.

I looked at the link and I may have to change my mind on spats - they really look cool with the white wall tyres. Food for thought after all.
