Hey Reddo. Dont know what its like down your way , but up here in Cyclone country those things are just asking to blow away. If twas me. I would build a carport on wheels. Four posts and a roof with the four posts sitting on big mother shopping trolley wheels so that I could move it around the yard as I pleased of better still park the van and pull the shed over the top. Now back to me. I still cant track down an aluminium j moulding or whatever its called to go around the edges of the van. Ive been to both aluminium places and the caravan place here. The alum guys tell me that they dont have a product that could be bent around in a curve. The caravan guy tells me that J moulding is patented and protected thats why the aluminium guys dont have it. Frankly I dont give a rats who has what all I want to know is where do I get the moulding? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Reddo, You don't want a tarp or caravan cover sitting on your van in the elements mate. It will eventually over time rub its way through the paintwork and make a mess of Matilda. I like Scootman's idea of the carport/shed on wheels. I've seen them around the lawn cemataries Never thought of parking a car or caravan under one Palmdale at Ourimbah has a few of them... Would they miss one Otherwise spend the cash and extend the shed Cheers mate Greg

hey Scoot I found a mob in Newcastle that has made a jig with three roller wheels. If i buy the j mould off them they reckon they can roll whatever radius i want even increasing or decreasing if i leave the TD with them for a week. They use normal j mould but can adjust the radius by moving the jig wheels closer together for tight radius and further apart for large sweeping curves. Sorta like a glorified pipe bender. I reckon I could knock one up in the shed of invention. Blokes like Col could knock one up in their sleep. Thier Offer sounds good . i will have to check them out before i let em loose on my "Stone the Crows - Minibaego TD". hope they are still around in 2010 when i am ready for the jewellrey to go on the TD. Meanwhile thanks for the tip on a portable shed on wheels old mate. Top idea 25mm gal Square section comes in 6 metre lengths and i have an endless supply of wheely bin wheels . Plenty of tarps... have stick welder ... will travel. Look for an orange glow in the southern sky... it will be me fizzing a portable shed together. or otherwise watch the newspapers for a bloke getting arrested stealing stuff like giant gazebos from the florist at the Palmdale cemetery. Scoot We don’t have the same cyclone problems as you do up there.. but we don’t have bananas or rainforests either..
Reddo.. Despite Col’s derogatory remarks about my mates at Ringwood and Knox, Supercheap have a 6 metre x 3 metre steel framed, ‘polytarp’, peg down type of carport for about $140.
It’s maybe a temporary solution but they are moveable and a few pegs and ropes and they stay where you put them, or as Scoot suggests park the van, five mates and a slab, one on each leg plus you, and move the cover over it.
The Warehouse also has a similar item for under a $100 but you’d need to check the height to see if it’s high enough.
And no, I’m not going to convert the bloody measurements to feet and inches for you, do it yourself you lazy bugger.
Col.. The aluminium section you’re thinking of, is it soft anealled and could it be wound in a circle (say around a 44 gal drum or something a bit larger) and freighted up north and still maintain its shape when unwound?

when we moved in with my father in law while we were building our new house I needed somewhere to store my project beetle and I just built a quick and nasty carport of the back of his old shed it just knocked some 8 ft starstakes into the groundscrewed my joists of the shed to those then screwed the second hand iron to that took maybe 3 hours cost about a $100 in second hand materials and worked great its still there and is solid as a rock I cam e-mail a photo if you'd like marcel

Wow now I know that the squeeky wheel gets the oil. Thanks for all your input. The roller idea is a good un. I think next week what I will do is contact a few places around cairns and see if someone has the equipment to roll the j mould into the shape I need. Let me tell you about this van that Im attempting to assemble. For me its been one huge battle. There is not one thing that I have done that for me has been easy. Unless you count that decision to build it, and that was just stupid ! Every cut, slice screw nail putty bog weld etc that I have made has taken days of deliberation. Its almost at an end, and Ive learnt so much from it its not funny. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have annoyed the living crap out of many people trying to find information, then annoyed them even more trying to understand the information, and that includes a lot of people on here. Jailbar your a gem. The van, well its ok, it is far from a masterpiece and Im hoping to god that the main roads dont want to see it to register it. But I am proud of what I have accomplished and you never know one day from the deep dark north a little midget van may come tootling down the highway and you will recognise it from this forum. So to all on here that have aided abbetted and assisted I thank you from the bottom of my wheelbearings. Now I only have one more problem. HOW THE &*() do I get it out of the carport? Scoot

Hi All, About this J MOULD stuff, we ordered online 4 / 6metre lengths from www.caravanplus.com.au in Canberra for about $12/ length they pack it in a hard cardboard tube and can freight it anywhere in the country.Freight costs were very reasonable because there was bugger all weight involved, also this particular grade of mould they sell is great to work with being that it bent to the required shape with ease. Cheers Kingy

I can atest to the $149 dollar portable carport that Col was talking about because I put one up to cover my work truck for winter three years ago however get yourself a 5/16 tech head driver buy 100 steel techs and screw them in the joins it helps to strengthen the structure buy some top hat channel or otherwise known as steel gyprock batten by another 100 techs and screw the top hat channel length ways along the side and back of the structure go to stratco or buy some secondhand corrugated sheets and simply screw the sheets on to the top hat channel you can go further and top hat channel the roof as well then anchor the structure to the ground it keeps the rain of my work ute all up cost with seconds from stratco $500 I bought some heather from bunnings and made it look like a bali hut by attaching it to the roof and sides all up $700.00 we had cyclonic winds in Perth this year no probs and it is freestanding no guy ropes it is anchored to concrete though they are legal as a temporary structure like a tent but if you anchor them they are illegal because it comes under council scrutiny and you need a permit Wills handy man corner proper anchoring is essential if you do it it works for me most caravan repair yards (attached to carvavansales yards) will sell you ali j mould ;D

Ok great, thanks kingy , this looks like the way for me to go. Now the next question, is the J Mould really the thing that I need? if it is, how do I attach it to the van and does the J part go on top of the van or on the side? Scoot

Hidey Ho there trendsetters So... I get outta bed this morning. Pack the cattledog in the ute and head to the papershop. Grab the Herald and check the For Sales... Bingo. Ad reads: Galv Carport 3 metres X 6 metres. as new .$400. So i gets on the dog and bone and rings the punter up.... scores an address and Off i scoot on the Norton to windale. Old duck had shelled out $795 at Bunnings. Had the thing erected then realised that the poles are only 2.1 metres high and she cant fit her new hiace campervan in there... doh, doh, doh. Large hearted me offers her $300 and i pull it to pieces and remove it from her yard. She says "Okey Dokey" and everyone is happy. I,ve gotta go back and pull it apart during the week, All 8G tech screws. Dead set easy. Gunna havta weld a bit on the bottom of each of the 75mm square section posts to get enough hieght to clear Matildas roof . She wasnt sure how much of the poles is set in concrete but i am guessing about 300 to 450mm. If this is correct i might not have to weld anything onto the posts... Cool Bannanas No wuckers. I will scratch around and get 4 oversized floppy shopping trolleys style wheels so the thing can be shunted anywhere in the yard. I can whack a few tarps down the sides with 75 X 25mm ( look Jim I'm talkin' metric) batterns nailed to the bottom edge so i can roll them up and tie them off when getting "Tilly out of storage. Had a look at Supercheap... 6 X 3 gazebo sheds are $299. So. looks like i've scored a bargain. Thanks for the tips fellas. If nothing else my posts create a bit of lateral thinking. IF the goose had remembered to shut the hatch . The braticce and tent pole lean to would have lasted another 20 years. Just gotta remember to shut the bl##dy hatch from now on otherwise i will be smashing the hatch instead of the carport... or is that caravaport Its all good brothers. Rddoutoftheshedofinvention

Well folks a lot can happen in 24 hours ... and it has. Packed all the tools , ladders last night ready to head off and demolish the carport today. Walked into the loungeroom this morning to find the missus doubled up in pain on the floor.
Straight off to the hospital. Got over there at 8 ish . just got home without Trish at 1.30pm.... Diagnosis "Pancreites" Not sure if thats how ya spell it but i am dang sure i dont want it. She is full of morphene and still complaining about the pain. Looks like Trish will be off her feet for a few days and i will be off the air until she is giving cheek again. Bloody lucky to get away with the few days at the end of the tour and Coledale together.
Sorry for the lack of vintage van content here folks. Aint chasing sympathy but i feel it doesnt hurt to let others of the extended vint van family know whats doin.
I Done the same when Cobber went in to hospital earlier this year.

Hi all I have been in contact with caravan plus. this is what they said. While the aluminium is easy to bend - It is difficult to bend properly without kinking. You would need to take it to a pipe bender /rooler to achive a professional curve unless it was going around corners. Although J-Mould is often referred to as the item, many other profiles are used that are not called J-mould - see our other aluminium extrusions. Same problem of kinking will occur with all unless done correclty. The easiest to use (truline) will probally not give the look you are after. I really need some help here guys. Would you please look at this page www.caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=35_409&products_id=194&osCsid=fd960fde11af79f78d2b01a3a04fda61 and tell me what you think. I have to be honest and I dont understand why the moulding has to j shaped. Sadly I know of no other old vans around Cairns that I can go and look at, would I not be better off with a with just an angle mould? I can see that Im going to root this up and am wondering if I wouldnt be better off offering a free airfare to one of you guys who know WTF your doing to come and do it. Scoot

Hi, Just out of hospital myself and have spend hours trawling through VC reading all the posts. Feel I have to write to you about your good lady's bit of bad fortune.... and make a few comments. Firstly I was sad to read about her condition, but am glad to hear that she is now on the mend. Morphine...... absolutely fantastic whilst you are on it, especially the liquid - no pain, feeling reaaaalllllllly happy all the time, but the come-down can be horrendous, especially the depressive teary bit (not a tear-drop!!!) .....but it does get better, loads. Good idea about wheeling her round the yard, at least you should be having some good weather to do it in..... cold, frosty conditions here, not condusive to going out much Take good care of her mate and best wishes to you both from the cold and artic land of poms Victoria Here's hoping to get rid of the crutches and back the renovations soon ;D ;D ;D
