G'day all, Before I start attaching a tailgate to the td, what are some of the better ways of affixing and weatherproofing the buggers. Regards Andrew

Welcome Andrew, My name is Martin and I 'Play' with Teardrop Trailers. If you want to contact me please do so as I have ' Weatherproof' hinges that I imported from the U.S. and may be of interest to you. Even if only for a look as they are an exact replica of the originals as used in the 1938 model on. There have been others made, but at this stage I have only been able to source these also from the U.S. Cheers. Martin. 0407 227 860

Hi Martin. Are these hinges the same as those used on "Benyon" ( spelling) teardrops? . I think they are refered to as "Hurricane" or "Cyclone" hinges in America . Look very similar to the slide together hinges you see on the back of flexiglass canopys on Tradesmans utes??? I have just finished fitting the bootlid on my teardrop. I use a long piano hinge made of copper i found on a kerbside cleanup pile of junk . I am considering sealing the hinge by fitting a 2" wide rubber strip about the thickness of bike tube rubber over the hinge so it covers the hinge by about 12mm above and below the hinge. Sealed down with a bead of sikaflex and a 12mm wide stainless "J" mould fitted facing upwards across the full width of the van to form a gutter and catch the roof run off water heading down the back of the van while travelling and stationary.. The lower strip will be a plain stainless 12mm wide mould. I know this might sound ugly but i seen a similar set up on the old TD "Honeymoona" at Munmorah during May this year. Except the sealing strip was made of canvas and was only secured on the top edge and hung like a curtain over the hinged area. Primitive but effective!!! Have a look at the "Central Coast - May weekend " page 4 pictures of Clare and Doddys TD to see what i am talking about. Obviously your hinges will look a lot neater . All i am saying is that this idea of a rubber strip would also provide waterproofing around the hinge. Good to here from you again. Reddo.

Next time you see one of the XL bodies on the back of one of the telstra vehicles have a look at the piano hinge on the lift up door on the LHS. it has a rubber/canvas strip attatched to the hinge and the body is built with a Rain gutter, similar to the J mould, in fact they use to use J mould on the earlier bodies. I will get a photo tommorow of the hinge before it is fitted and one of it fitted to the body. Cheers , Steve

Thanks Reddo, I know the T.D that you are thinking of...... The Benroy. Yes it is similar to that. Although there is another type also used! I have tried to source a comparative hinge in Aust. without success at this stage, as the Aluminium Extruders here are a tad shy when it comes to producing a similar product. 'Trademarks' 'Copyrights' etc. etc. Oh and did I mention them being sued by the U.S manufacturers! A company has said that they would look at extruding 'some' for me if interested.............. 1000 metres!!!!!!! to get the ball rolling. Hooley Dooley!!!!!!!Anyway, suffice to say, I am still importing small quantities from America from time to time along with other items of interest to suit the Teardrop Trailer. The fenders I have made here using my own moulds and am currently designing a different look of fender as an alternative to the current design. All in the name of fun! Anyhow, enjoy and keep up the rebuilds and resto's. Cheers for now, Martin.

Hi again martin I wander where the mob that make challenge and flexiglass canopies here in australia get their hinges from. I am sure that these canopies are not fully imported. i am still searching for mudguards while i am building my TD. here is a set of 4 that where on ebay cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&item=170019955281&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1i emailed the seller in Qld. he is marketing them and was hoping for $250 for the 4. i asked about buying 2 of the 280mm guards. he quoted me $120 pair plus $20 postage. a fair price but they do not have much style about them . I would like to get hold of someone who makes replica gaurds similar to those used on 20s and 30s model cars. Valanced and longer than the standard trailer or cycle guard. I live in hope and will keep searching. Plenty of steel guards come up on offer but most require a fair bit of work to make fit slab sided tear drops. Cheers mate Reddo

Hey Reddo, I was up at Caves Beach on the weekend and saw a fibreglass van under resto along with an old pickup truck. But was unable to contact the residents........oh also an old Ford in the garage I think from the distance of the driveway! Anyhow, I make fenders/guards that are designed of 'olde'. Contact Cobber as to quality as he has seen them I think. I'm biased. Cheers. Martin PS: I have had dealings with 'CHALLENGED' Canopies and will advise you that I was told that they manufacture ALL there canopies in the USA!!!!!!!!! Main warehouse in Western Australia? ?? Anyway Goodluck.

Why you........Bugger off Will... "Kick,...... punch, ......scratch.....Knee to the groin to finish you off".... i am Cobbers second best mate ever ( Martin has just become my first).. Just ask him . He will tell ya. Go on Cobber you tell him!!... "Get to the end of the line and quit pushing in"......
Ahem!!!... Pause here to straighten shirt, comb my hair and wipe Wills blood from my Knuckles.
Now where was i...... Yes please Cobber and Martin . Please post details / size/ width/ price of these gaurds ASAP. They are the best looking repo guards i have seen on offer. Everything i have found have been too narrow. I.E: distance from where they bolt on to outer edge does not cover the wheels completely. .... even with skinny FJ wheels on the TD.
What else do you market for TDs martin???
The sunliner is at Blacksmiths just north of the traffic lights. I think just about everyone that is into old vans or hotrods have called in there on the hwy to enquire about the cars or the vans.... everyone except me that is........ fibreglass effects me like kryptonite effects Superman. So i avoid it wherever possible... ( sorry Petehumps ... couldnt resist having another shot). Seen another Sunliner ( Spyder) headin up the hwy last week on the F3 . He turned and headed towards Hexham.

Goodmorning All, Thankyou for your interest in my Guards. I am currently working on another design that 'swoops' back at the rear, similar to a '34 Ford guard which adds a bit of 'flair' to the rear. I will post a photo of these when available. Thankyou Cobber for posting the photo for me. ;)My digital camera has had a coronary on me and needs to be fixed! Thanks also to all that I have spoken to on the phone. Hope to talk to you all more in the future. I will make up a list of the items I have and post it here for your perusal! Remembering that this is just a 'Hobby business' of mine, I will endeavour to answer all questions as soon as possible. I say hobby as I work full time at TAFE teaching during the week and build T.D.'s in my spare time...........You all know about that 'Spare Time' thingey.............hahahaha. ;D Anyhow Cheers to all for now and thanks for your questions. Martin. PS: If you want to contact me please call 0407 227 860. If I am in class I cannot answer but will return your call as soon as practicable.

G'day all, I started the thread and then fell off it. Reddo ; that was the way that I thought I might go but I wondered about an internal gutter like kaybee put on their td. Martin; thanks for the advise. Those guards you have are good and would like to see the new design as we also require guards with flare. Regards Andrew

Hi V V Getting back to the T D guards, I was at the Cootamundra swap last week end and there was a bloke from Guardian Trailer Products there. He can supply single cycle type guards that would be suitable for a T D. The Guards have a square inner edge to bolt to the body and a curved outer edge, and come in various sizes. From memory I think they were about $150 a pair ,or it could have been each, I was too busy looking for bargains. Anyway he can be contacted at 02 6024 3539.
Cheers. Trodler.
